Morrow --> Rotation?
Somewhat surprised that nobody has posted this anywhere on here, but, according to Baker, McLaren and Co. is starting to entertain the idea of moving Morrow ::gasp:: in to the rotation.
"We have thought about it,'' he said. "We haven't come to a conclusion yet, but that is a possibility.''
Morrow could either go back to Class AAA to begin the transition, or work out of Seattle's bullpen in the majors.
"There are a couple of schools of thought,'' McLaren said. "That he could be like Chamberlain and work on it here.''
I don't see why they would be throwing Morrow back to AAA in order to stretch him out when the team is in dire straits as it is.. Why not keep him at the major league level and let him work it out up here? What's the worst that can happen? (barring injury which would happen in AAA too if it's gonna happen) Morrow fails to go 5 innings? He loses? Yeaaa... what's new?

You do what the T-Rats are doing with Aumont
You piggyback his 3-4 innings of work onto someone else’s starts… except who in our rotation can go 5-6 innings? Maybe Silva.
Then after a few successful runs, you put him in the rotation and get 5-6 innings out of him, and take it from there.

Oh for chrissakes..
You, me, and everybody here knows that, but they haven’t admited it publicly yet. Morrow being turned into a starter would be a public admission of the season being over.

ICHIRO ADMITS THIS SEASON IS OVER
by giving up on fly balls and drinking SP Lager!

Ichiro needs to drink SP Lager in the outfield. During games.
That would be awesome.

there is some evidence...
that major league innings are “more stressful” than minor league innings. So that’s a reason to prefer stretching it out in AAA as opposed to the big club. I would still plan to throw morrow ~50 pitches and then bring in Batista and let it roll from there.
M, period. Fresh, comma.
by manzell on May 25, 2008 3:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It's more stressful
in that, if you screw up in Tucson or Salt Lake City, nobody really knows or cares (hell, the local media in those towns won’t even notice). But if you screw up in the bigs, no matter what team you’re on, you’re likely to see your screw-ups on ESPN or FSN.
by Gomez on May 25, 2008 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who cares, nothing is expected of him.
ESPN/FSN has been showing Washburn/Batista/Silva get shelled for two weeks now. At least he can say this is my first time starting in the big leagues – all those guys are veterans who make tons of money.

Plus, he has not been hyped up to be a savior like Kennedy/Hughes in NY were.

Yeah, and if he manages a couple innings of scoreless ball..
I don’t think they’ll hold a press conference and have clubhouse interviews on Sportscenter like another seemingly national Yankee favorite in Joba.

How do you know?
He has pitched 3 or more twice and let up no runs each time. I dont think he could perform any worse than our 4/5 pitchers have done the past two seasons.
If he pitched 5 innings and let up 6 runs it would be par for the course. He would have outpitched 2 of Bedard’s last 3 starts too. Haha.
by ASUBoyd on May 25, 2008 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
so are you saying morrow > bedard?
c’mon. do you seriously think morrow joining our rotation now….while our season is over…is more advantageous than if he gained some AAA starting experience? give me a break…
br
by sirbrianwilson on May 25, 2008 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I definitely think stretching him out at the Major League level
is more advantageous than AAA starting.. I would look forward to watching Morrow starts much moreso than Wash or Tits or Silva at this point
by seattlesundevil on May 25, 2008 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Give you a break? Yeah, right.
Bedard is 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in May. So yeah, Morrow probably is better than him right now since he is pitching like a complete asshole.
And yeah, of course him joining our rotation now when the season is over is more advantageous. He would be getting MLB innings, not AAA innings, infinitely more valuable.

Morrow > Bedard?
Surely you’re not serious.
by Jeff on May 25, 2008 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That isn't what I'm saying.
I’m not suggesting he is better, but i’m pointing out that it isn’t as if Bedard is pitching anywhere close to “well” or “decent”.
I am saying there is nothing Morrow can do that can be considered disappointing since every member of the rotation already has that locked up.

by Jeff on May 25, 2008 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that remark was more to highlight the low downside of starting Morrow than to say he's actually better than Erik Bedard
even though he could have used better wording to make that point, obviously.
by Gomez on May 25, 2008 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Way to go, you can re-type what I wrote and take it completely out of context.
I already clarified what I meant. What more do you want me to say? Why even make that post?
I am not going to sit here and say Morrow is a better pitcher.
All I am saying is that it would not be hard for Morrow to perform better than Bedard has this month with 2 terrible starts. “If he pitched 5 innings and let up 6 runs it would be par for the course. He would have outpitched 2 of Bedard’s last 3 starts too. Haha.”
That is what I originally said. Just because some guy interpreted it as me saying “MORROW IS BETTER THAN BEDARD” doesn’t mean I said that. I am not sure when “Morrow is probably better right now” turned into “Morrow is a better overall pitching package, capable of outpitching Bedard over the course of an entire season.”
I said Morrow could outdo 2 ip 6 ER, and 4ip 9 ER. Really not much of a stretch to say that.

Even though it probably is appreciated, I don’t think any of them need you leaping to their defense, every one has been more than capable of justifying their position on things when I’ve called em out on it, which is one of the cool things about the blog.
You realize I can disagree with Jeff here, and still love all the work he puts into the blog?

Yeah, do me a favor and learn what a qualifier is.
There are two of them in there and they are pretty important. Kind of the difference between
“Morrow is better than him”
to
“Morrow is probably better than him right now”
This is also completely ignoring the fact it was all typed in jest – poking fun at how bad our rotation has been as a whole.
I’m done here.

Yeah, and the only two colors are black and white.
Totally subjective thing to comment on – this is getting pretty ticky-tacky.
You have typed in jest about how bad our rotation is many times. That doesn’t make it funny, it just means you aren’t being completely serious.
Obviously you read what I was writing differently than I intended it – whether through poor choice of words or misinterpretation – the semantics don’t matter because I have clarified what I meant. What more is there to write about this?
Whatever though, you can think what you want.
Bedard sucks, Morrow is the alpha and the omega. There you go.

Why let him develop in AAA?
I have a couple reasons:
1) His secondary pitches need improvement. Maybe not if he’s going to be a league average starter. But we drafted this guy thinking he could be a well above average starter. And to become that he needs to improve his curve and his change. They are both pitches with + upside that aren’t there yet. You can make the argument that facing big league hitters will force him to improve his command in ways that AAA guys won’t. I don’t think his secondary pitches are close enough to their potential for that that to be the primary concern. If you want to tell me that when rosters expand come September, sure, but right now Morrow needs to be starting in AAA.
2) We don’t need him. This team isn’t going anywhere this year. Let Corcoran take those innings. The goal for this season should be nothing more than avoiding profound humiliation. That’s it. Win 70 games and go home. Therefore if there is any risk in exposing our top pitching prospect to Major League hitting as a starter that risk should be avoided until the team is potentially competitive. That time is next year.
3) He’s not Joba Chamberlain. He lacks the track record of success in the big leagues and the track of record of success as a minor league starter.
I think it’s insane to leave Morrow up. He looks really good this year, and if all he could be is a top notch 8th inning guy, then sure, keep him in the bigs. However, he can be way more than that, and we need good homegrown starting pitching going forward. Let’s make that happen. Morrow to AAA!

Actually, this wouldn't surprise me:
Juan Ramirez: Disgruntled ace demanding a trade before deadline.
Ryan Feierabend: Veteran soft tosser kept around for his guile because he ‘knows how to pitch’. ERA: 5.25
Kyle Lohse: Proven veteran who knows how to win. 5.36 ERA with 4-17 record.
Kyle Parker: Steady young talent who is the sign of a brighter future of this organization. 4.56 ERA 45/60 BB/K in 160 IP.
Doug FISTER: Can be a great pitcher if only he could avoid the big inning. (See: Meche, Gil, 2000-2006)
Where’s Felix, you ask? Why, in New York, of course!

Batista and/or Washburn need to get out of the rotation right away. Morrow now has a slider/ curve, change, and split, so now is as good as ever. Slip him in there he, its not like it gonna hurt our chances of winning.
As for AAA or here. I say here. Last thing we need is for Morrow to struggle in AAA then let Bavasi “think”.
by Edgar for Mayor on May 27, 2008 1:23 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You gotta worry about Morrow's psyche too, though
and put him in a position in which he can be successful. I like the idea of grooming him as a starter, but I think he would be best served maybe even starting in AA for a couple of starts just to (very likely) experience some success – then he ends up back with the big club after… maybe 10-15 minor league starts (so around mid-August) and gets a trial then.
