Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

5/24: Open Game Thread

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees, May 24, 2008 10:05 AM PDT

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Carlos Silva 3-3 10 10 0 0 0 0 62.1 73 34 34 6 12 24 4.91 1.36

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Mike Mussina 6-4 10 10 0 0 0 0 50.1 57 30 23 7 8 25 4.11 1.29

Both of these teams are starting participants in the 2008 Ball In Play Olympics. One of these teams has a good defense.

Last time Silva pitched in New York, he allowed eight runs and 11 hits in three innings. Fortunately the only thing the Yankees have done between now and then is swap out Morgan Ensberg for Alex Rodriguez.

MLB.com: "Joba experiment continues"

“Joba Chamberlain will throw approximately 45 pitches against the Mariners on Saturday, and he will enter the game at a point to be determined. It’s all subject to change based upon the score of the game, and upon how well starter Mike Mussina is pitching.”

Other teams are treating us like extended spring training now.

It’s only a matter of time before we start seeing headlines like, “Pitcher X to make rehab start against Seattle Mariners.”

So I've been up for 26 hours and counting

I wonder much of this game I get through before the Ms put me to sleep. Silva’s either going to bore me to sleep or my comments are going to start losing any semblance of lucidity I have left.

Krueger's Keys to the Game

- Move their feet
- Keyhole’em
- Win Mariners Style

That 3rd one should be just WIN shouldn’t it?

Oh hey David Cone again

it’s nice not to be beaten over the head with intellect this early in the morning.

by Jeff Sullivan on May 24, 2008 10:05 AM PDT reply actions

Three women had filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Cone, claiming he exposed himself to them while he was in the bullpen during a 1989 game at Shea. The incident was the lowest and most embarrassing moment of his career.

The whole boring thing

Yeah, Mike

The Yanks are real nervous right now.

by Matthew on May 24, 2008 10:19 AM PDT reply actions

Just woke up

Why the HELL is Jeremy Reed at 1B? Rather than LF?

Why the fuck doesn’t McLaren put Sexson in CF while he’s at it. It’s the exact same difference.

Today's color...brown!

Since its shitty.

I get woken up on 3 hours sleep thanks to some jerks hammering on a roof. I have acid reflux kicking in. Everytime I yawn my jaw snaps. My a/c is fucking up so its hot in here. Impossible to go back to sleep. My brother will prolly call in a few hours for me to come over.

You mean all this and I get a MARINERS game???? With SILVA over Felix?

Wooooo whats next? A Spinal Tap? Band or real thing, same thing.

No kidding

I immediately punched the crap outta my ceiling in retaliation. Genius I tell ya.

Thats ok, I would be immature and egg their house. But I will just throw eggs inside their mailbox instead.

Yes

Saying he hot dogs it too much as compared to Matsui who is more humble and focused on the fundamentals.

Neither

If you can cut mustard

You either:

A) Need to check expiration dates.
B) Need a new refridgerator.
C) Need to share the LSD.

BUT WE NEED RAUL'S BAT

HIS BAT ONLY WORKS WHEN HE’S PLAYING LF!!

by ThundaPC on May 24, 2008 10:46 AM PDT reply actions

When Rauuullll is in left forget Wee Willie Keeler's advice to hit 'em where they ain't

Reminds me of a game between the Twins and As when Canseco was with Oakland. The Twins were taking every opportunity they could to hit the ball to right field – with great success.

Mound Visit

Mel: You okay?
Silva: Yeaman.
Mel: Think you can give up some more runs.
Silva: Yea, just have’em hit it to LF.
Mel: Good man.

Speak of the Devil.

Baker just posted: “Bavasi rips into players”.

by ThundaPC on May 24, 2008 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with Bavasi

That it’s the players fault and not Mac’s fault. But sometimes you need to shake things up.

by phil333 on May 24, 2008 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

jesus christ

more about clubhouse chemistry?

THEY LOSE BECAUSE THEY ARE BAD!! IT HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH PLAY DATES

by Matthew on May 24, 2008 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

But, but, but ..

isn’t that why the team sign/trade for those veteran players with character and grit? Didn’t they sign those guys because they would know how to respond to losing streaks and difficult times? Help train the young players how to play the game the right way? Do the little things to win games?

by Steve Nelson on May 24, 2008 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Buh?
He described the team’s clubhouse as “a group of individuals that the players tolerate.’‘

by JI on May 24, 2008 10:55 AM PDT reply actions

Double buh?
Bavasi said McLaren has done his job and that there’s only so much any manager can do in a clubhouse where nobody is being held accountable for their play.

by JI on May 24, 2008 10:56 AM PDT reply actions

There’s only so much any general manager can do on a team with bad players.

You know what this team needs?

Some veteran presence.
