5/22: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers, May 22, 2008 10:05 AM PDT
Jeremy Bonderman can't pitch* despite possessing all the stuff necessary to be a staff ace. Miguel Batista can't pitch.
(* Not counting 2008 however, as his fastball's down and he may be injured.)
Best Mariner lineup so far all season. Small victory.

I was going to say that it would look like a ML lineup if we played Albert Pujols at first instead of Richie
but that seemed too obvious

Look at it this way,

It’s sort of nice to know everyone has problems.
We'll get it just enough to lose the Strasburg Sweepstakes

Woot!
Reed, you better go 4-4, so maybe we’ll get more than one day of this.
No, that would just showcase him and we'd trade him for a delicious can of sprite.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
you know the Mariners would trade
for a half-opened, flat can of Sprite, though. Which is pretty much as not refreshing as you can get.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
They'd probably trade for a half-opened, flat two liter of Sprite

speaking of Giambi
I’m praying for him to have a monster year.
You guys know he's definitely signing on the East Cost right?
He’s said as much before. That’s why a lot of Angels fans didn’t want him.
~Till the Halo burns out...
How does that have anything to do with wanting him?
by Graham MacAree on May 22, 2008 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions
Well, I meant within the realm of people who could actually be signed here
Who you think you WILL sign is something different of course. But if your the GM, who would you be thinking about going after?
~Till the Halo burns out...
Agreed.
If we’re going to pay $Texas for a slugger at 1B, it might as well be for best-in-breed, like we did for Beltre.

his areas of incompetence would not preclude him from nabbing Tex.
See, the guy I think he'd try and get?

by eponymous_coward on May 22, 2008 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions
He has Clement or Joh for that.
Basically, I assume Bavasi will do something retarded this offseason like he usually does.
I could see us bidding for Tex, too, though, but falling on our faces ala Zito.
by eponymous_coward on May 22, 2008 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions
True enough, but "I want to sign with a team in X location"
prior to free agency isn’t usually one of the things they lie about. If everybody on the East Coast lowballed him, he might leave, but Baltimore and Yanks are definitely going to be in on that action.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Brian Cashman isn't dumb enough to keep Giambi
when Texiera is on the market. And Don’t be too sure about the O’s. If they keep winning, and appear one piece short of a playoff team they might very well pony up. And the O’s are Tex’s wishlist team.
~Till the Halo burns out...
They won't keep winning
and who says Cashman calls the shots or is even the GM of the Yanks this winter?
1 year or 8 years...
and the Steinbrennars are smart baseball people?
Even if he's not.
Jiambi is not a Steinbrenner favorite, while Tex will likely be the top draw on the ESPN lists (ie. top of the “Oooo Shiny” list)
And you seem pretty confident that they wont keep winning. Sherril has demonstrated an aptitude for closing, and Cabrera-Guthrie-Burres-Albers doesn’t look like too bad a staff right now. They could easily end the year at ~.500 or better.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Sherrill has demonstrated an ability to turn nearly 81% of his balls in play into outs.
Oh wait, that’s not an ability.
The Orioles suck.
They have a good defense, so it's it's not surprising that
Sherrill is turning balls in play into outs.
~Till the Halo burns out...
+11 according to THT
Through yesterday, good for 4th best in the AL. shrug
~Till the Halo burns out...
So, basically, the Orioles suck?
Works for me.
by eponymous_coward on May 22, 2008 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions
For Sherril?
Because Relievers have tiny BABIPs all the time, and sustain them fairly regularly.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Overall yes.
But you have guys like Sherrill balancing out guys like, say Chris Bootcheck or Rick White. The range is way larger.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Um
The reason the spread is larger is because relievers throw less than starters.
by Graham MacAree on May 22, 2008 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah.
That’s why .190 BABIPs are sustainable in relief. Fewer innings, less time for guys to get a read on your pitches.
~Till the Halo burns out...
They're not sustainable over time.
The more inning you throw, the more likely you are to pull to the center.
No it seems pretty likely that it's skill in Sherrils case
Take a look at his splits for last year vs this year. He’s doing pretty much the same thing this year that he was last year. The only difference is that this year he’s facing more righties since he’s a Full time closer. His numbers might come up a little bit, but I wouldn’t think too much. His leftie numbers were bumped up last year because he was always facing the BEST lefties. Whereas now, it’s whoever happens to be up in 9th.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Not below .200 necessarily
but below .225, sure. It won’t come up enough to make a significant impact on his effectiveness as a closer.
~Till the Halo burns out...
If only we had a way to statistically measure such a thing
in order to be able to quantify the spread, or variance if you will, of such a sample.
Oh well.
If only I were talking to people who had access to such numbers
And could post them, if they saw fit.
~Till the Halo burns out...
.807 DER isn't good
it’s “The Orioles manage to have 11 fielders and nobody cares because they’re boring and they suck” unsustainable.
It'll happen if he stays healthy.
You’re BABIP doesn’t stay that low unless it’s 2001 and your name is McGwire.
You know it wouldn't be totally awful if we just put the right people in the right places.

Being put in the DH role is akin to solitary confinement I hear.
the boredom. oh, the boredom.
What a fucking warrior at the plate!!!
Good job, Ritchie.
What the heck are we doing?
We’re not supposed to score runs

Actually, yes.
I like midgets more than I should.
So why is Batista's velocity down so low?

At least we don't have Zito's contract.
I'd rather Washburn get it first

See, how can we throw Washburn under the bus like this
he teaches the other pitchers his pitches! What a great guy!

They're following Moneyball as told by Hendu.
Defense doesn’t matter. Hit three-run homeruns.
But they don't hit any of those either...
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions
Cuz they're doin it wrong
At least we don't have Zito's contract.
It also amuses me how many of the HS pitchers that the book talks about became successful ML starters
Grienke, Kazmir and Cain, for starters
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions
Eh.
I think drafting high school players is a riskier proposition.
It is
It’s just sometimes a good call
by Graham MacAree on May 22, 2008 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions
I agree it can be a good call
but I’d save picking high school players for at least the third round.
But many of the upper ceiling ones will be gone by then
so you’re just picking risky players who don’t have crazy upside in many situations
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions
It clearly is
it’s just that it amused me how the book spent the whole draft section talking about how stupid it is to take that risk on HS pitchers in the first round, and that’s pretty much the one year when a lot of them were really successful.
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions
It's when there are two players on the bases and someone hits a homer
I know, as an M’s fan it’s hard to understand. Just think back to that 1997 team if you have to.

The year we had the most talent ever assembled on an ML roster
won only 90 games, and got pwned by Mike Mussina in the playoffs.
And this is why you don't get too excited about the Rays
cuz damn that ‘97 team could have been great…
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions
no
Top 3 starters: awesome
bottom of rotation and bullpen: crap
Dan Wilson at C: not very good
Cora at 2B: meh
Russ Davis at 3B: are you KIDDING me?
by eponymous_coward on May 22, 2008 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions
But it's not like you're gonna have nine All-Stars on the field every game
Cora and Davis were both passable
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions
The mid-70's Reds or A's? The late 30's Yankees?
Seriously, you’re kidding, right?
There was a good accumulation of talent on the 90’s Mariners, but I’m not about to put a team that won 90 games into the same class as teams that won multiple World Series, especially since, hello, the Yankees and Braves spent the last part of that decade owning MLB.

Davis had Jim Presley disease
Where you swing at pitches being thrown at Little League games 50 miles away.
That, and he was a complete [COATHANGER] with the glove. Just terrible.
by eponymous_coward on May 22, 2008 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions
Not unless you consider him a +++ defender.
He hung around forever, but to give you an idea:
Bob Boone’s lifetime OPS+: 82
Dan Wilson’s: 80
Bob Boone had 4 full seasons where his OPS+ was over 100. Dan Wilson had zero. And Boone had the rep of being a no-hit, all glove C.

June 14th 1997
i think Griffey went yard in this one too. the only time i’ve ever seen him go yard
Royals rock
Mariners suck
i was only 10 at this game
I do remember that this was the night that Alvin Davis was inducted into the Mariners Hall Of Fame
Royals rock
Mariners suck
His most recent Mariner home run landed
like fifteen feet from me.
Needless to say, it won’t be his last HR as a Mariner

Johnson, Fassero, Moyer, Sanders
looked beastly on paper.
It’s hilarious they could use the change in their couch cushions to buy a halfway decent reliever.
Good top three, but only Ayala, Slocumb (cringe), and Timlin could get anyone out in the pen.
Spoljaric wasn’t incredibly awful either.

I'm pretty sure...
that shoving a pencil in his eyeball would be justified in the eyes of the law.
Nah, he just made a simple observation that the M's are bad, can't fault him there
At least we don't have Zito's contract.
Yes you can....
He’s insinuating that you are too much of an idiot to make the same observation.
I don't know, I think it might be a good system
Like in little league when the games were finished after one team lead by ten runs.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on May 22, 2008 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions
I sorta like this idea
We’re a solo shot away from taking the lead!
It's like a golf handicap
great, the team is so bad we need a four run handicap. And that’s just to be competitive
by seattlebruin on May 22, 2008 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions
If we're just going to give away games like this
Why not let me pitch? Sure I probably would hit the strike zone only 1 out of ever 100 times, and I can’t pitch faster than 60 mph, but at least it would be hilarious. Plus If you’re going to suck, might as well set some records while you’re at it, like most walks/runs in an inning.
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
You'd probably do it for free too.
At least we don't have Zito's contract.
Shit I was almost right
I was wondering if the Mariners have given up the most doubles of any team so far this year. They lead the AL with 106 (+4 more so far this game), and are only behind the Cardinals (119) for the MLB “lead.”

"Sasaki...Suzuki...they just changed one letter!"
This coming from a guy who won’t shut up about the fact he played in Japan.
Is Victor Martinez invading anyone else's mlb.tv broadcast?
Its fucking crazy, he just appears for a split second in the middle of an at-bat, introduces himself, and then they go back to the game
the mlb.tv producer today for this game is hilarious
what ack said as i was typing
i think they are doing it as a joke
“hi, this is victor martinez” randomly
Graham, do you still think
Baek, Washburn, and Dickey are roughly equal?
