“After the game, I spoke with starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn, who got roughed up by the Tigers to the tune of 9 runs on 12 hits in just 2.1 innings, one of his more mediocre outings of the year. Washburn said that Johjima was having trouble communicating with Burke, who caught today. ‘Well Kenji is calling the pitches from the dugout,’ Washburn said ’ and for some reason, he kept calling for the suck pitch.’
I also spoke with Johjima, who talked to me through interpreter Anthony Suzuki. ‘I’m not sure how much to blame I am,’ Johjima said ‘I think Jarrod has a problem with the signals – I know Jamie kept calling for the slider and he kept throwing the suck pitch instead.’”
