Olympia, Yauger Park
Hey guys, I'm playing in a charity softball tournament this weekend in Olympia at Yauger Park. It starts early Saturday morning and ends Sunday afternoon.
I'm staying overnight Saturday at the Red Lion (looks like it's a little east of the park) rather than driving back and forth from Everett. I'm looking for ideas on good places to eat and/or hang out in the area that night (any good microbreweries?).
Any suggestions from people familiar with the area? I haven't spent any time down there since my brother was attending Evergreen State about 18 years ago, and I wasn't 21 at the time, so my experiences were geared more towards underage stuff then.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Odd info note: Yauger Park was designed not only as a park, but also to serve as a stormwater retention pond during storms. I always thought it just flooded everytime it rained.

i grew up in olympia..lived there for 20 years.
red lion is about 3 miles down cooper point road.
places to hang out? it depends on what kind of stuff you enjoy doing. a good local microbrewery is fish tale ale. great beer. it’s downtown at 515 jefferson street. they have decent food as well.
places to eat? old school pizzeria is a great place to grab a slice for a couple bucks if you’re looking for food on the run. darby’s is a great place to grab a nice breakfast. service is kind of slow, but it’s reasonably priced. what kind of food joints are you looking for?
what kind of bar scene are you into? there’s a wide variety of places to check out.
if you’re looking for scenic things to do, it’s always fun to walk down on the docks then up to the capital building around capital lake. priest point park is another place where you can walk down to the water.

I'll be hanging with the guys, so scenic walks are probably out.
Fish Tale sounds cool, I’ll have to check it out (mapquesting 515 Jefferson as we speak).
As for the bar scene, anything that isn’t a dance club is pretty cool to me. I’ve always kind of preferred little “dive” bars myself.
For food I’m guessing somwhere with good steaks or burgers or something. The tourney is a charity thing with mostly firefighters playing, so I’m thinking they probably don’t want to hit some sushi or salad joint.

olympia has about 30 coffee shops each with their own style
The is also the Eastside. There is air hockey and pool there.
Old school is one of the best places for a slice of pizza. It is wonderful!
Olympia is small and a kind of cool place.

Downtown near the vintage clothing store.
I’ve always wanted to stop in there, but haven’t yet. Another place I have to visit…

BCP is good (and it’s way closer to Yauger) but there’s nothing else to do in the vicinity and Old School kicks it’s ass in every way.

Must. Visit. Gravity. Beer. Market.
And buy good, sweet beer. Mmmm. I’ve lived in Oly for 10 years, but haven’t visited Fish Tale yet (it’s downtown near the water). That’s the only microbrewery I know of, although there’s a decent community of folks who brew there own here (and some great supply shops from what I hear).
The Ranch House BBQ at the Governor Hotel is a must visit. GREAT BBQ—and their garlic fries are better than those at Safeco. Can be hard to find a table, though. I like Lemon Grass or Angel’s for Thai. Both of them have good food.
I know nothing of the bar scene here—haven’t been to one, and since a lot of them have had some pretty shady pasts, I’m not exactly excited to go. My wife always locks the doors in the car as we drive through downtown, so, even if I did have a kid-less night with her, we’re likely to go somewhere other than that vicinity.
McMinneman’s bought the Spar, and while I haven’t been back there since they opened after the remodel, if you like that chain and their wares, it’s available here.
But the Gravity Beer Market is the best local place for good beer, even if it’s more of a store than a bar (they do have tasting there, but it’s on Tuesdays and one Friday a month). I’m not sure if you can crack one open there or not—there’s certainly room along their bar, but I’ve never really seen people do this, other than during their tastings.

The Gravity Beer Market is right up 4th from downtown. It’s past Orca Books and across from the Subway as you start going up the hill.
And, yeah, I’m sure getting a seat at Ranch House on a Saturday night would be challenging.

Yeah, those places all suck. I remember when date-rapist types would get kicked out of BarCode for being dicks, see all the hot hipster girls hanging out in the Voyeur and stumble in, see about 30 lumberjack lookin’ dudes turn and glare, and slowly turn around a walk away. Good stuff.

Eh, they're not so bad.
The problem isn’t with the people who actually make up the core of Olympia’s music/art scene, who have been there for years and are actually active and creative. The problem is with rich kids who aren’t smart enough to get into Reed that go to Evergreen, equate the hipster look with their high school world’s definition of “cool” and do their damndest to try and outdo everyone else. They’re gone in four years anyway, so they’re not even worth paying attention to. But from the outside looking in, it’s easy to lump everyone in the scene into that group.
The people in Olympia that I couldn’t stand were the activist-y types with absolutely no investment in the community who’s idea of constructive civil disobedience was to throw bricks through the windows of downtown businesses and do everything in their power to turn the entire community against Evergreen.

Some thoughts:
Most of the places in Oly that I love are of the “not for everyone” variety, like the Voyeur (surly staff, lots of hipsters, but the beer selection and food are worth it,) the Brotherhood (very loud music, lots of hipsters, but nice bartenders and good drinks,) Quality Burrito (lots of hipsters, but delicious food,) and the Rang Dong (lots of hipsters, scary Vietnamese gangsters, but those to things together with lots of booze are really entertaining.)
However, if you go early enough (before 8:00 or so) the Brotherhood is just another dive-y watering hole, and it’s a good place to start a night out. I used to really like McCoys to have a pitcher and watch the M’s, but I’ve heard it’s gotten pretty shitty/scary lately. The Eastside was never my cup of tea, but it’s a nice enough bar with good beer. Just stay the hell away from the 4th Ave Tavern. Ick.
I can’t recommend Old School highly enough, and while I never frequented Fish Tale before I moved (they were one of the few non-smoking bars in town at the time and I hadn’t learned how to deal with middle-aged, wealthy hippies yet) they do have great beer and it’s a nice spot. I’d definitely go there now.
If you’re looking for a nicer place for dinner, Mercato (an Italian restaurant just outside of downtown) and the Lonestar (a bit of a drive, in Lacey, but really excellent barbecue) are worth checking out.

I've heard it's gotten really cketchy in the past few months.
When the guys that owned Old School bought the Reef, they chased all the tweakers and scary Sylvester Park drug dealer types out and they ended up at McCoys. So, apparently the Reef is now what McCoys used to be like, and McCoys is an even scarier version of what the Reef used to be like. I haven’t actually been to either bar in over two years, though, so I don’t really know if it’s true.

I live closer to the Lonestar, owned by Ramblin’ Jack’s folks—need to get there, too.
The W. Oly Brewery City is indeed closer to Yauger, and I like their pizza but I always get sick after eating it. Damn—it sounds like a trip to Old School is in my immediate future…

The Eastside club beats the pants off the Fishbowl, if you ask me. Old School is a good choice, but watch out for their stealth grease attack.
Also, I’m going to take this opportunity to bitch about softball leagues filling Yauger up all summer! It drives me crazy! There’s no organized hardball in this town outside of the schools, and there are no other public fields to use. I’m going to have to enroll at Evergreen to try out my changeup!

Yeah
OFS and the regal 12 aren’t really competing in the same market. Congrats to Lacey for having a newish multi-plex, but OFS ‘wins.’
As a Tacoman, however, I’ll take the Grand + Doyles for a nice combo.
Lacey also has an interesting taco place in Paco’s Tacos, but for my money, it’s still bested by the taco truck on Sleater-Kinney rd. I had high hopes for that Pints and Quarts bar, but that too didn’t really turn out right.

there's also a small beer store with imports on mud bay road close to yauger.
I think it’s called like “home brew supplies.” you could get there in about 3 minutes from yauger.
the eastside is a good divebar with enough tv’s to keep you entertained. pool/darts, etc.
definitely go to old school over BCP, although, bcp is tasty as well. old school is one block north of fishtale. just cross 4th street and it’ll be on your right in-between 4th and state.

Wow this makes me a little homesick hearing about Yauger Park
Born and raises from the bad side of town (Lacey…well actually thurston county and closer to Yelm but who’d want to claim that).
Downtown Olympia is interesting. I wouldn’t call it exciting but its usually a good time. I think the Eastside Tavern is the best. Probably better than the Fish Brewery just cause of a more distinct atmosphere and might have more beers on tap (could be wrong). I don’t want to call it a dive cause its not but its got the good part of dive bars.
Don’t listen to all these fools. Go to BCP and not old school. Old School is good but BCP is more softball style while Old School is more olympia style. There are a few other decent places to eat around like some asian or seafood.

OK - here's my advice
Yauger’s on the west side, so if you’re hungry after the game, go to the Taco truck (Tacos California) on Harrison and get a burrito or a bunch of tacos.
Downtown:
my fave bar is probably the Brotherhood – the happy hour is ridiculously good/cheap, and I like the jukebox. Down Capitol a bit (to the north) is the Royal, which is very similar, but a bit brighter. Neither has food, though the Royal was supposed to be installing a kitchen. At either place, you should go get some slices from old school and take ‘em to the bar. They don’t mind.
Mercato’s is fancier, as people have said, and the service has been up and down for me. But hey, they just had a huge kitchen fire, and I’m not convinced they’re open right now.
Ramblin’ Jacks is good for groups, but to me, it’s not quite delivering given the price. It’s fine – some of the wood fire pizzas are nice.
Charlie’s is just east of Ramblin’ Jacks about one block, and it’s more of a typical sports bar (though it’s small). Not bad, not great. If there’s a game you wanted to watch and you’re downtown, that might be a place to do it.
Hannah’s is ok in the early evening; I have no idea what it’s like at night. Recommended only if you really like tequila. They’ve got an amazing selection. Personally, I hate tequila, so…..
The Eastside club has a nice selection of beers, but the atmosphere isn’t great. But like you said, you can just park downtown and wander from place to place until you find one that suits you and the team. Good luck!

Yes, actually - there's one on the West Side
It’s called Westside Lanes – it too is on Harrison, basically on opposite side of the street from the taco truck. It’s small, but I’ve bowled there…not too bad.
Yauger Park borders Harrison and Cooper point, so just head east on Harrison a few blocks and you’ll see it. It’s set back from the street a bit, so keep your eyes peeled.
