5/20: Open Game Thread, Part 2

For a few seconds in the first, I was entertained to see Verlander sucking. Then our offense reminded me what's what. Then Carlos Silva reminded me why I hated his contract. I should start writing these things down so I don't forget again.

Sonics with pick number fourth

Crap

Coldly devouring reason as if it were a delectable snack

by Frosty Raptor on May 20, 2008 5:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention OJ Mayo, who the Sonics will probably take in this position

and who is highly overrated by everybody. So, there is solace in that.

by marinator on May 20, 2008 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think OJ

might actually be underrated at this point. Since everyone hates him and no one really bothered to watch him play.

From what I've seen

His defense is highly suspect, and his ball handling leaves a lot to be desired.

by marinator on May 20, 2008 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

His defense is actually the one thing people rate down

that they shouldn’t. He’s a much better defender than given credit for. His ball handling is not as good as I thought it would be and he didn’t attack the rim as much as most people expected him to either.

The poster formerly known as Matt.

by bluemax on May 20, 2008 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

OJ is one of the most underrated players around

and keep in mind who this is coming from. He’s a legitimately elite player, and from all accounts, a stand-up guy. I don’t blame him at all for the Guillory situation – if I were in college and someone offered to give me a car, nice shoes, a big screen TV, and lots of pocket cash to just do what I would do anyway, I wouldn’t turn them down.

I would be thrilled if the Sonics drafted him. His court vision is impeccable and when he plays with better finishers (realistically, the only guy he had on his team who moved well without the ball was Dwight Lewis), he’s just going to get better. His jump shot is a thing of beauty too. I’m just terrified that we’ll get stuck with Jerryd Bayless, who is either going to be Antonio Daniels or Dwyane Wade – there’s really no in between.

And BTW, his defense is outstanding.

Just curious. How fast is Verlander throwing?

Is he the same kinda suck he’s been all year, or has he returned to form? If he’s still down in mph, then the M’s are indeed bad.

Clemens
Martinez
Maddux
Johnson
Glavine
Schilling
Pettite
Mussina

Which would you choose? I like Glavine, but he’ll never be an M. I doubt Randy wants to come back. Schilling probably hates the NW. Maddux will never leave the NL.

How much losing can a Canadian Baseball Writer take before he snaps?

From the 5:45 blog update…

“That’s now seven strikeouts in six innings for Justin Verlander as the M’s prepare to bow out of this one in a hurry. Now an 8-1 game after Cha Seung Baek served up a homer to Magglio Ordonez on the fourth pitch thrown in the fifth. Verlander looks cured of all the pitching ailments that had afflicted him heading into this game. Call it a dose of “M’s tonic’’. Got a losing streak that needs fixing? A little problem getting hitters out? Well, hey just call 1-800-Bavasi and he’ll send you a lineup guaranteed to fix your hurts. By the way, this is the type of game that gets managers fired.”

Coldly devouring reason as if it were a delectable snack

by Frosty Raptor on May 20, 2008 6:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

from 5:56
5:56 p.m.: Look out, folks, it’s hailing in Detroit. Baseball-sized hail stones are landing in the bleachers, or just missing the heads of sprinting Seattle outfielders. Oh, no, wait. It’s only the latest BP session being thrown by Cha Seung Baek. The reliever who makes you think Rolaids in ways totally different from J.J. Putz just gave up his second and third homers in two innings in the sixth, making it 11-1 for a Tigers team outhitting the M’s 15-4. As I said, this is the type of game that gets a manager fired. The M’s have shown little life at the plate or in the field and are getting humiliated by the worst team in the American League.

All I can say is… I’m glad I don’t have his job.
