Holy jebus FF3 RC1 is fast
Go get Firefox 3 RC1. Go get it now. I just opened a 700+ post game thread in under 20 seconds (Beta 5 took about a minute). Gmail's lightning fast. The browser starts up almost instantaneously. And all this is on my crappy work network - can't wait to see what this does at home.
As long as you get the nightly tester tools addon , all your normal extensions will work fine (NTT 2.0.2 is compatible with FF3 RC1).

I didn't think it would be a huge step from RC5
boy was I wrong. This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while.

Whoa. This is pretty sweet
and even though it’s really superficial, I like the new layout too.

A couple of crashes
But overall I’ve been very impressed with FF3, Beta 4/5/RC1.

For some odd reason I can't get to ESPN with RC1
but that’s not necessarily a loss.

Yes.
FF3 RC1 >>>>> anything else I’ve used. Even on my crappy 6-year-old Mac on the fringes of WiFi signal at home, it’s MUCH improved over everything else…

Yeah it's pretty fast
The only thing I’ve noticed is that RC1 won’t load mlb.tv, I have to use the IE extension. In Beta 5 Firefox loads in naturally.

do you still have to go in and adjust the about:config
variables upon installation?

Which ones?
The only one I had to touch was the one where the search bar automatically suggests based on what I’ve typed, but that’s purely a personal preference. I haven’t touched the “firefox tweaks” ones, if that’s what you’re referring to, and this thing still screams right along like the aforementioned PCP-laden t-rex.

yeah, i was talking about the tweaks. they really improved performance
of the previous releases. although, i’m currently using FF3…and for the last 5 minutes this thing appears to be insanely fast.

Yup, don't touch a thing
native FF3 blows the tweaked FF2 away.

what tweaks are you using for FF2?
... they are rumored to cause havoc in some situations, and this has been suggested as one reason FF2 tanks on long gamethreads. i’m going to guess http pipelining type stuff.

i was talking about the pipelining tweaks.
although, the gamethreads took forever to load on every browser i tried (firefox, IE, safari)...whatever they did with FF3, i’m not complaining.

how do you disable the automatic suggestions? that's annoying.

in about:config
set browser.search.suggest.enabled to FALSE. Suggestions go bye-bye.

uh, no idea, sorry
it works fine on my version. Are you seeing suggestions in the search bar to the right of the urlbar? That’s what search.suggest.enabled controls, and the one to which I was referring…any other search bar may not be controlled by that pref…

ahh..i think we might be talking about different things.
i’m trying to disable the feature where it’ll bring up a drop down menu with sites in my bookmarks/history that are similar to what i’m typing.
for example: let’s say i want to go to “mail.yahoo.com”
when i type the “m” it’ll bring up things in my bookmarks/history that start with the letter m. then when i type “mail” it’ll bring up stuff like gmail, indiana university webmail, etc etc…

Ah yes, that's different.
To stop that, go to Tools/Options/Privacy and uncheck “remember what I enter in forms and the search bar”. It will then stop doing that.

it’s not a big deal though. the increase of speed makes me forget this issue.

it's so much easier to have it as an option in the default FF search engine
all of B-R’s glory is just a ctrl-k away.

ctrl-l goes to the urlbar
ctrl-pgUp shifts focus one tab to the left
ctrl-pgDn shifts focus one tab to the right
there’s a bunch more here.

Just copy over your search engines from your existing FF
and they should work like a charm. They should live in a folder called “searchplugins” in your old FF directory, and copy/paste them into the same folder within the FF3 directory structure and it should work after a restart of FF. I have B-R as one of mine and it works fine.

Even more so than FF1 was. I hope they fix that by the time the stable version comes out.
