Felix, Mac and Kenji
Evans mostly is complaining about the escalating walk rates and the porous M's defense.
He then goes on to report that Johnny Mac is blaming Kenji and his poor ability to get in sync with pitchers. I haven't been following too closely... has anyone else heard Mac say this?
Personally, I've always thought that a catcher's influence on "calling the game" was important, but a little overrated. What do you think about this possible issue?

Ugh
He might be the only idiot in the fantasy world saying to sell Felix, give me a break!
I haven’t heard anything about Mac blaming Kenji, I had only read the Washburn quotes. If that is true then why play him ?

Nobody cares about Brad Evan's Fantasy team.

Donkeys.
you forgot the word “donkeys” at the end there. Classic mistake.

A catcher can have a ton of influence or none
Depending on the pitcher. Pitchers who are US born in particular do not throw as much growing up as they do in Japan.
Because of this the set up and target are more important to the success of an American born pitcher, in general. Most of the really good Japanese pitchers can hit their spots with their eyes closed on the other hand.

I thought I lost that luggage in Greece.
Hey, I’m flying.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

I think Fernando Valenzuela
used to keep his eyes rotated back in his head through his delivery.

Just in his windup, they came back forward before his release if I remember correctly.

He could have been a one-year wonder,
they never really told you how his career turned out. I’m guessing he went on the DL with “flu-like symptoms” and VD at least once.

The question
was not about Fantasy sports. I acknowledged that Brad Evans is a douche in my very first sentence.
Just wondering if anyone thinks Kenji is part of the problem, or if this is a case of Kenji getting thrown under the bus. And if so… is Mac really dogging him, or was it just a Washburn quote… or what?
by johnbai on May 16, 2008 1:29 PM PDT 0 recs
I am not a fan of Kenji behind the plate, but he has improved every year.
I’ll give credit to him for working his butt off to get better, so the blame thing seems unfair.
I really do think catching is a vastly different thing in Japan compared to here. So yes, in some ways I think he style has hurt our pitchers, but Jarrod Washburn would suck no matter who was behind the plate.

You'd have to think that if it is a valid issue
it would have come up before the extension was signed.
Don’t listen to Johnny Mac, he throws everyone under the bus – remember how he blamed Hargrove for winning too many games last year? What a fuckhole.

It's a valid question
I just think none of us have anything to offer as far as an answer.

I don't know
The only statistical information I can use, is that opposing hitters have about .100 points higher OPS (or was it just avg?) when Kenji is catching, opposed to any other backup catcher over the past three seasons. Small sample size for the backups? Bad luck? who knows.

Yes
in theory PITCHf/x finally allows us to analyze the differences (if any) in how different catchers call games.
It would still require a shit-ton of work, though. And PITCHf/x isn’t old enough to give us a meaningful sample size yet anyway.
