Why I Love the Rays
I was born and raised in and around the Seattle area, cursing me to a life tied to the fortunes of a team assembled by a man who purposely acquired Horacio Ramirez and Jose Vidro as premier offseason acquisitions. Why then, is my second favorite team the one nearly furthest away from me geographically? Many reasons.
I love baseball, always have. As a kid growing up in the Seattle suburbs, I was inundated early in life with Mariners' baseball. I still remember the first game I attended when I was five years old, walking up the big ramps of the Kingdome, looking around in awe, mostly at how much concrete there was. From that point on, baseball consumed me. I collected baseball cards, played little league, went to as many games as possible, and if I was not doing any of those, I was probably outside tossing a rubber ball against a concrete wall with a taped up strike zone on it, assured that one day I would be throwing off a big league mound.
My obsession with baseball did not end with the actual game itself. I also immersed myself in fantasy baseball as well, beginning in the mid 90's with the mail-in leagues run by The Sporting News. In an effort to help figure out the best allocation of fantasy resources, I tracked every player's stats in a spreadsheet, thus beginning my life's work of being an incredibly huge baseball nerd. What I got out all those fantasy leagues and all the baseball video games that I would play was an intense appreciation for roster management. To this day, when I find time to play baseball video games, I don't actually play the games (I'd much rather actually play baseball than simulate playing baseball), but rather I tinker with the roster for hours on end and then just sim past all the games. That's the challenge I enjoy, constantly retooling, rebuilding on the fly, making draft choices, etc. As such, there's no wonder that I carry this view over to my fanship of major league baseball as well.
I go into each offseason (or sometimes sooner as the case may be, such as now), coming up with dozens of different plans for how I would shape a team were I to have complete control. It is remarkably pointless work, but I cannot help myself, that's what drives me. Obviously being a Mariner fan means I'm left with a pretty hollow feeling at the conclusion of each offseason, bemoaning what could have been and attempting to trick myself (I don't have to try very hard, I'm a sucker) into hoping for a good season from my well-intentioned but not very bright team. That doesn't stop me from keeping an interest in other teams as well, in particular, to other team's rosters and their management thereof.
That's where the Rays shine through the strongest. I cannot think of any other team in baseball that handles their roster as intelligently, as efficiently, as the Rays do, and they've been doing it since day one of the new front office. It doesn't always show up on the field right away, but that's the best part, every move they make is seemingly part of a larger overall plan that guides them far more strongly than the short-term goals in front of them. Always put your stock in with the smart people, they'll triumph more often than not in the end.
And that is what the Tampa front office is made up of. It's not just the obvious stuff that the more intelligent fans see and spot as good management practice like locking up young talent, caring about the draft and the like. It's little things as well that would go unnoticed by all but a select few lucky enough to know that the Rays are doing them. Those lucky enough to know that, for example, the Rays take a keen interest in the latest analytical research. That they're users of Pitch F/X data and that they are interested in Greg Rybarczyk's work with Hit Tracker. These tidbits do not come out often, but when you catch wind of them, you nod and say to yourself, "of course they do. It's the Rays. They get it."
For those looking closely enough, of which there weren't enough, that long term plan was obviously coming together quickly and the throw-away comments about the Rays being possible division contenders come 2010 started to appear more frequently in 2006 and 2007. It was a bastion of far off hope for those of us sick with being bludgeoned over the head with Red Sox/Yankees non-stop 8 months out of the year. Then this past offseason came and saw the Rays completely revamp their biggest weakness in team defense and front it with a solid rotation backed by youth and incredible depth and supported by a growing crop of young and talented hitters. Meanwhile, they've done a fabulous job at locking up that young talent to contracts that benefit both sides; offering security for the players in exchange for the same for the team along with a discount over the insane market rates.
Suddenly it wasn't a far away, "maybe 2010," dream of contention, but rather a specific, "wow the 2009 Rays are going to be good," target. And then, here's the great part of good planning, it breeds good luck, the plan came together even quicker than anyone on the outside, and I bet some on the inside, thought it would and we see the Rays sitting atop the 2008 AL East.
Make no mistake; the Mariners are my team and that's almost certainly never going to change for as long as they're in Seattle. My civic pride for this city far outweighs any rationality I have. But logic tells us that the 2008 Mariner season is over. I won't stop watching, but it's not the same without even a glimmer of hope of post-season play. The Rays still have that hope. Will they stay there? Maybe not for this year. But get used to seeing their name up at or near the top of the East for the next several years. They have the talent, both on the field and in the front office, to run with any team in baseball and neither looks like it's going anywhere soon.
If you need a winning team to root for in 2008, there's no better option. Go Rays.

Agreed
this is one organization that’s fun to pull for. They’re a non-rival / non-boring version of Oakland.
I'm rooting fo the Rays if but for no other reason that the Rays may be responsible for me seeing
a Yankeeless postseason for the first time in my baseball fandom.

Good stuff.
Rays is fun baseball team on the rise. They’re becoming what I wish the Mariners would be. A team that’s building a solid foundation for winning now and in the future.
Being from Seattle and cheering for the Mariners
is still better than being from Tampa and cheering for the Rays.

Too bad nobody from Florida loves the Rays
It’s the middle of May, they’re in 1st place in the AL East, and they are still drawing less than 20k?
Definetely can’t blame the weather!
But...but...
if that happened, Howie and Chuck would lose a sizable chunk of their market! They’d have to field competitive teams to make money!
Amen, brother!
I already pretty much hate the Mariners, a NW rivalry would make it that much easier to quit caring about how poorly run they are.
I would buy season tickets forever if there were a team here.
Also I would cherish the irony...
If they somehow kept the name Rays when they moved to a place with 8 months of rain.
They would probably be called the Lumberjacks, or the Beavers
Either way, it’d be nicer to have a team which is properly ran in the vicinity.
They should call themselves the Vikings or something
just to piss off the Mariners. Or like the Tritons.

It’s either rainy (Thunderstorms) or hot nasty humid 100 degrees in the summer. I think Florida is greatly overrated by northerners.

After June, I can't imagine playing outdoors in Florida
I think a dome is needed in Tampa Bay. I can’t believe they are going to build a non air conditioned stadium there.
Unfortunately I am also a like long M’s fan, but just moved from Tampa to Bellingham in Jan. I thought this might be a good season to be close to the M’s. :(
I guess I don’t have to stay up till 2-3am watching games anymore.
From the stadium plans:
— “Mast and Arch” retractable roof design will provide a shelter from sun & rain and capture bay breezes while retaining the character of an open air ballpark & preserving sweeping views of the skyline and waterfront.— Air conditioned concourses and cool zones will be provided to maximize comfort for all fans.
I don’t know much about it, but it looks like the architects have comfort in mind. Whether it will work well is another question, though. I’m excited to see it.

I always have supported the Rays/Marlins because
1. I have lived in Florida
2. It’s so much fun rooting for shitty teams/teams without payrolls
In football, the Texans have been my second team for a while. I’m a Sonics fan, but I also watch a majority of Knicks games. When these teams win, it feels so great compared to when a team like the Mariners win. Because when the Mariners win, it’s expected; when the Sonics win, it’s a miracle. So, even as the Rays and Marlins have gotten better, I still have the mentality that gets excited when they win, because I’ve had the mentality that they’re bad for a while.

By the way
Rays so bad compared to Devil Rays. Name changes always suck. I want my Washington Bullets back.
The Rays are the early 1990s Mariners (with this year being the 1991 M's)
Dome. Years of futility with no winning seasons. Indifferent fan base. New owners revitalizing the team. New logo and uniforms. Stable of top draft picks finally panning out.
I thought the new logo and uniforms happened in 1993.
At least the introduction of the compass and color teal.
Teal- the most unfortunate thing to come out of the 90's
The one reason why no matter how much I love my Hornets, I’ll never buy any of their merchendise.
Yeah but the yellow ones look like easter eggs
I keep hearing rumblings that the Hornets are switching their uniforms around next year, I hope to god they are. They switched the bee logo to be more New Orleans-ish already.
Old Logo:![]()
New Logo:![]()
One thing is for sure, Hornets fans hate Oklahoma just as much as Sonics fans so at least when we beat the crap out of them you guys can take some solace in that.
Let's see if we can get Oklahoma to secede from the Union or something
that might be kinda cool to have a separate country surrounded on every border by the US

I feel bad for the Sonics
‘cause I cheer for them and the Seahawks if their games don’t impact the Hornets or Saints respectively. I loved OKC’s “No really, we just want to be a good host for the Hornets while their city gets back on their feet. We have no intention of trying to keep them. . .” Then they immediately set about stealing the Sonics when New Orleans insisted they return and honor their lease.

That was the whole point of this diary!
I understood the point
And I thought it was well-written and thought out, so I apologize for making it seem like I was dismissing it. I can agree with everything you said about the Rays. But, unless it somehow helps the M’s, I’m not going to “root” for another team. I’m not going to say I “love” another team. If you want to, cool, but that’s not for me. That’s all I was saying.
Your post implies your subject is incorrect.
...and now I'm here
I get that
I tend to not think when I respond on message boards, which gets me into trouble sometimes. So, again, I apologize to Matthew. All I’m saying is I don’t openly root for other teams unless it somehow helps my team. I’ll even root for the Yankees if it means the M’s will get into the playoffs. If Jeff, Matthew, etc. want to root for the Rays-cool. I’m just not going to.
Matthew's post was titled: "why i LOVE the rays"
Speedomike was just saying he can’t quite feel the love.
I think I speak for both Matthew and myself
when I say that the Mariners are the long-time wife to which we’re inextricably committed, and the Rays are the hot secretary after whom we lust.

I know you’ve probably noticed me being more distant recently. You’ve complained that I haven’t been as emotionally involved. Well, it’s true. I’ve been seeing someone else. All those times that I’ve been working late, I’ve actually been watching the Rays games and I have to say, the excitement of that has been leaving me drained. Look, it’s not you. It’s me. I just feel stuck in a rut. We go through the same routine every day for what feels like the last few years. We never do anything fun anymore, it’s just the same ol thing and I know that’s enough for you, but it’s not enough for me anymore. I want more. I want the spark again and the Rays just give that to me. I feel young again. There’s a spring in my step. I was smiling yesterday! I’m…I’m sorry, but I just need some time apart. I’m not sure what I want anymore. I’m so confused, but I have to see this out. Until then, I’ll still be around if you want to talk and I promise to take care of the dog, but I just have to get away for awhile.

I'm more for Baltimore
You and your stat-nerds can have Tampa. Yeah, yeah, they’ll probably kick tail and take names. I won’t deny that they’re the absolute sleeper of the team this season to watch, and that they’re a great, fun team to follow.
But being a die-hard M’s fan, and for reasons most of you know, it’s also logical that I’m drawn to Baltimore. I mean—a shitty front office with players that are playing over their heads yet not quite good enough to win the division? If that’s not the east coast version of the Mariners, I don’t know what team is.
Yeah, it’s definitely more fun to follow the Rays—and they’re much, much, MUCH more likely to take the division or the wild card than the O’s. But I’m not sure I can know how to be a Rays’ fan. It’s too… Different…

I like the Rays for several reasons
But the most important reason is this:
There would be nothing…..short of the Mariners winning a WS…more satisfying than seeing the Yankees and Red Sox shut out of the playoffs, this year and/or for many years to come. Imagine the panic at ESPN when they have to fill all of that airtime.
Just because they suck doesn't mean they won't be on TV

They'd have a hard time talking about them as much as they do now, at least
Although, I wouldn’t put it past them to completely ignore the Rays in favor of those two even after it becomes clear they’re the best team in the division.
Either way, just hearing the wailing cries of Yankees fans shut out of the postseason over and over and over again would be music to my ears. I love it when that sense of entitlement of theirs goes unfulfilled.
Another reason: they just took 3 of 4 from the Yankees

Did the Rays get rid of all of their homicidal maniacs or just Dukes?
Or was he the only prospect who was crazy and did so much that it seemed like multiple people?
Dukes was the only homicidal one.
Delmon just divided the clubhouse into “Delmon” and “rest” and he was always sticking up for Dukes, despite the fact that Dukes rarely stood up for Delmon—of course Dukes wasn’t around from June on, so that has something to do with it.
