ST. PETERSBURG -- The Tampa Bay Rays and pitcher Scott Kazmir have agreed on a four-year contract extension. The first three years of the agreement covering 2009, 2010 and 2011 are guaranteed with the team holding an option for the 2012 season. The contract guarantees Kazmir $28.5 million and has a maximum value of approximately $39.5 million.
Seems like a pretty solid deal to me.

Good on you, Friedman. Good on you, Rays.

I said “Braindead meme” which I didn’t think was gonna spawn anything, but I think Fin or someone suggested a photoshop. He soon after did it himself.

I prefer the original over the Marylin Manson cover.

The Marylin Manson version is decent
until he goes into the cheesy devil voice in the last verse.

I like to pretend the Mason version didn't happen.

One thing about these deals
Yes they are good deals, bargains, etc. But they also make these players much more attractive in a trade. People keep talking about how the Marlins have taken a huge step by committing to Hanley, but that contract is very enticing for a potential trade partner.
Which is why it's such a good deal
because it ties the player to the club, but still leaves the club in a good position if they want to trade the player.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Exactly.
Whether they trade him or not, the deal is wise. I don’t see how a player becoming an attractive trade target is a detriment of any kind.
That said, I think there’s about a 0% chance that Kaz gets traded anywhere within the life of this deal. The Rays are set to contend for years, and there’s nothing to gain by shipping out a young stud starter.
They should trade him back to the Mets for Wright/Reyes
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
If the Mets hire Steve Phillips back, it could happen.
(And yes, I know it wasn’t Phillips who made the original trade.)
Except a closer, a center fielder, and three decent prospects

I don't think Mr. Bavasi will be employed in 2011, but good point.
I guess I’m assuming that the Rays, unlike the O’s, will be a contender toward the latter years of this contract, and therefore much less inclined to make a deal like that.
Right-
Yeah, sorry, that’s what I was trying to say. I was giving another reason why it’s a good deal. Looking at what I wrote though I can see why you thought I was saying it’s a bad thing. Yes, deal = good.
Cool.

you SHOULD be happy

There is nothing that binds you to being a Mariner fan.
Everybody has a choice as to which team they want to be a fan of.

Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with this not really.
Cause I mean, if I truly had a choice, and I imagine this is the same for most of us, I would of dumped this sorry as organization a while ago.

but there's always a new game to get in to
and it looks to me, as someone who has known you for quite a while now, that you are less committed then ever before.

Actually I think I'm more committed than I've ever been
I don’t know if that’s because of personal choice or because I run this website and don’t have a choice, but I can’t envision ever pulling myself away from the M’s. It’s just nice to have a diversion as fun as the Rays when the M’s fall on hard times.
by Jeff Sullivan on May 14, 2008 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions
I wasn't even really referring to the Rays
Just the overall tone that you’ve taken. To me it almost seems like you’ve given up on this organization, though you’ll still watch the games, still run the website, but you seem to focus less on the Mariners in discussions and get involved in more abstract discussions especially in game threads.
This again is just me as an observer who has known you for quite a while.

I don't think you have to like a team to still be committed to it.
...and now I'm here
I've given up on the people running the organization
I used to spend my time throwing fits, but I just don’t think it’s worth it anymore. So I distract myself by talking about hockey and Traudl Junge. I love the team, and I’m still hopeful for the future – especially if the current season is enough to get some people fired – but for the sake of my mental well-being I just can’t get too invested in the daily grind. Not when it’s going like it is.
by Jeff Sullivan on May 14, 2008 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions
but isn't that just a Catch 22
the people getting fired will then be hired by the people that still don’t get it…. I mean we’ve been thru Melvin, Hargrove, and now Squinty…. we’ve been thru Gillick and now Bavasi, unless there is a change at the top (which is unlikely) then you aren’t going to see any philosophical change to this organization just a different name in the seat doing the same things.

Stupid Rays.
Making smart moves while the Mariners are playing Miguel Cairo everyday!
Cheeseburgers are delicious.
The Rays once employed Miguel Cairo too

I am considering moving to Tampa
I could sell my 1,000 sq ft home in Burien and buy this. Then buy Season Tickets for $6 per game less than what I pay at Safeco. Oh, and my new home town team would rule.
Yes, but it would be in Florida.

I’d support that decision.

Yeah, my link to the 6 bedroom, 4 bath house for only $300K failed. Oh well.
Six bedrooms? Are you starting a harem or what?

I just want to play devil's advocate here
At some point these deals are gonna start backfiring on teams. If (when) Kazmir gets hurt and turns into Joel Pineiro or Gil Meche (both are not the best comps but you get what I’m saying) this deal will not look so pretty. There is risk with any deal. If Kazmir doesn’t get hurt then this deal probably saves the club quite a bit and locks up premium talent. It saves the club maybe $10-15 million if the club picks up the option. In this case that is probably worth it (cause Kazmir rocks) but eventually we are gonna see some players get overpaid. Longoria may be an example of this if he does not live up to the hype (I also like his deal but I’m just saying…)
by Edgar for Pres on May 14, 2008 10:01 PM PDT reply actions
Obviously not every deal will work out
but if you do things like this with all your young talent, in the end you’re going to be at a massive competitive advantage, even with the occasional bust.
by Jeff Sullivan on May 14, 2008 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Agreed
I like these deals too. It seems like this is definitely becoming a trend across baseball. Eventually stupid GMs are gonna mess up a thing you shouldn’t be able to mess up though. It’ll be interesting to see how they do it.
by Edgar for Pres on May 14, 2008 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions
They'll mess it up by doing things like signing Lopez to an extention and not getting anything done with Felix
by Jeff Sullivan on May 14, 2008 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions
:(
Why do you have to bring up things like that
by Edgar for Pres on May 15, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on May 15, 2008 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions
The only way I would ever quit the Mariners is if they traded Lopez for some pile of suck like Vidro
Don’t get any ideas, Bill. Don’t get any ideas.

At some point?
Bobby Crosby says hi. And that is why teams will continue to do deals like this. Even when a players goes down the Crosby career path, the deal isn’t really all that bad, and the team isn’t really handicapped.
Sure, there are risks to these deals. There are also risks to not doing these deals.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
Chavez is a bad comp
His extension was a pure free agency contract. He was already on the last year of his pre-free-agency years when he signed it.
Oakland has actually been burned by two of these deals in recent years. Rich Harden also imploded immediately after signing his extension. Had either of them extended into free agency, at free agent prices, they could have been sizable millstones for the club.
Long-run, though, you take these kinds of deals and write off the costs of the busts against the savings for the stars.
