JI, er, I mean, JIM Edmonds --> Cubs
Wow, so the former Cardinal goes to the division rival to kick ass and take names. At least that's what the AP Report is eluding to, I think...
Honestly, though, this concerns me. Like, majorly frightens me. I seriously suspected the Cubs would be the logical choice for a Griffey trade, even if the two clubs are in the same division. Griffey'd get that nostalgia by being reunited with Louie Louie, and yet the hope of contention since the Cubbies are in first place in the NL Central.
If this isn't 75 words, I'm going to swear a lot.

That's gotta piss off Cub fans something fierce
Not only because he’s a longtime Cardinal, but because he’s craptastic now and he’ll probably take time away from Pie.
Sounds depressingly familiar.

as the resident cubs fan...
you are right, this sucks.
it also means I will have to leave the “jim edmonds is the gayest baseball player ever” group on facebook.
(I got in trouble for saying that on the cubs sbn site because it says gay, thats why LL is so sweet)

A lot of websites that aren't very good get a lot of traffic
by Jeff on May 14, 2008 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Any opinion about which sites are worth visiting and which are worth staying away from?
ie, care to rank the SBN sites in terms of good, fine, and bad?
...and now I'm here

I don't have opinions about all of them
but my favorites are McCovey Chronicles, LSB, Royals Review, DRaysBay, and Gaslamp Ball. The only two I actively dislike are HH and BCB. The rest are either okay or I just don’t have much reason to read them.
As for non-baseball, Field Gulls is spectacular. Pension Plan Puppets is pretty good as a hockey blog. I don’t read any of the others and couldnt’ tell you the first thing about our NCAA network.

I'd also add Minor League Ball and Purple Row to that list of good reads.

BCB isnt bad
maybe its just because im a cubs homer, but It has good information and posts, just not the same college hangout atmosphere that LL has. its a different kind of good.

I kinda think AN sucks.
It was good a while back. But now it’s too…..I don’t know. Can’t really put a word on it. But I don’t like it.

I don't read it much
but if they’re interviewing Billy Beane, and FJM is citing them as one of the best ballball sites on the internet they can’t suck that much… can they?

They have a reputation for being awesome.
And while the reputation is deserved for what they used to be. IMO, they aren’t that any more.
I don’t know. I might be wrong here.

Ok after giving it some serious thought, I'm gonna revise.
I don’t think AN sucks necessarily . It’s just too chaotic for my tastes and not something I read much really.

To be honest
I read here, USSM, a little Churchill, the front page of VEB (which, the content is ok, but the commenter aren’t good), and some DRaysBay.

ATQ won best in the Pac-10
And seems to be among the most active NCAA blogs on SBN, surprisingly. It’s dead 5 times a week, and our patrons are minimal… but it’s a good lil place.

A move so delightfully stupid that you'd think Bavasi was sockpuppeting Hendry
Edmonds is DONE as both an offensive and defensive force. Meanwhile, the Cubs’ offense is SMOKIN’ HOT. Why don’t they let Pie play, take the GG-quality defense in a critical position he gives them, and be happy? Instead they’re going to bring in one of the most unpopular people in Chicago since Sammy rode out on a rail. And given how cashed out Edmonds looks, he’s not going to be much more beloved anytime soon.
I understand why Edmonds would go to Chicago – he wants to extend his playing career, like any self-respecting vet would. I just don’t understand why Chicago would want to go to Edmonds. This takes the fetishization of LH bats to ridiculous extremes.

Fair enough
I’ll just say this. I’ve seen way more passion at Wrigley than I’ve ever seen at Safeco or whatever they call the Dbacks stadium these days. And I’ve been to quite a few games at both places.
If the Cubs ever won it all I do expect many of their fans to turn into jerks, but it wouldn’t be the older fans. Those people are die hard and they know the meaning of loving their team.
by Sec 108 on May 14, 2008 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I won't argue with that.
I’m just going along with the fact that the baseball gods have designated the Cubs as the biggest losers in this sport. Weather it be logical or not, right or not.
The Cubs are on the verge of going a full century without a title. And I want to see it happen.

As for the Cubs, while I’d be happy for the long-time guys, I learned my lesson from having rooted for the Red Sox in 2004. Never again.

Also very fair. I would never advocate rooting for a team
Out of sympathy. Or because some aging old vet deserves his title.
And if Goose finds it amusing that the Cubs have gone 100 years without a title, so be it. It is different for me because I see my grandfather get closer to death every year and I know how much he just wanted one title. So jokes like that seem lazy to me.
by Sec 108 on May 14, 2008 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs

However not everyone gets to die fulfilled by sports, and fortunately for people like your grandfather, I’m sure they have bigger, more important things to be happy about.

Yeah, I shouldn't make it so personal.
I wasn’t mad at Goose either.
I guess I just wonder sometimes if I will be 90 years old, sitting in my seats at whatever stadium the Mariners are playing in come the year 2062, and hoping the team wins a damn ring before I kick.

I cheer for some seriously crappy teams
Seattle Mariners: Dont even get me started
New Orleans Saints: 41 seasons of football, 8 winning seasons, 2 playoff victories
New Orleans Hornets: Craptastic until sheer blind luck dropped CP3 in our lap
Nashville Predators: Allergic to the second round of the playoffs
by thewyrm on May 15, 2008 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And you've even gotten to experience CP3 in reverse
when the M’s took Brandon Morrow over Tim Lincecum.
Although that wasn’t quite as inexplicable as passing on CP3 for Marvin Williams

Devil's Advocate
Cubs need a LH platoon for center. Edmonds provides that.
The artist formerly known as Katal
by Katal LM on May 14, 2008 7:17 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You assume that
1) he can still hit
2) he can still play center
by JI on May 14, 2008 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd still take my chances with Pie over Edmonds.
Both are left-handed hitters who aren’t hitting for shit. One of them can play center field.
I know Pie looks awful at the plate, but stick him in the 9 hole and at least know that your center fielder is using his glove to make up for his bad (so far) bat. I just can’t see Edmonds being more helpful to the team.
by Teej on May 14, 2008 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
and Pie down to make room for him
which makes this a fucking stupid move
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
by I'm NOT Corco on May 15, 2008 12:59 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not only is it a stupid move
but it is also pointless. Pie will only get better with regular playing time. While he’ll get that in AAA, it won’t be against major league pitching. He needs to face real pitching. Now, I am a firm believer that Edmonds is done. Someone get him a fork-maybe someone will throw him one from the bleachers. The only good thing about this move-ok, there are two good things-is that it is extremely low risk. The Cubs will be paying only a portion of the MLB minimum while others will be paying him to play for the Cubs. The other, and eminently more enjoyable thing, is that this will mess with Cardinals fans something fierce-I love that.
Time is an illusion--lunch time doubly so.
