5/14: Open Game Thread, Part 2
I haven't been watching this game, thanks to work and all that fun stuff, but it would appear from the line score that our corner outfield defense is awesomely bad.

It’s that dull.

c) lighter fluid
d) all of the above

Well it's not A...
Why would you want to stay up and watch this team, I choose BC.

Well.. that's true.

I'm glad I haven't watched a game since Putz walked in the tying run 10 or so days ago
I’m not sure If I could handle Miguel fucking Cairo playing 1b AND batting 2nd! Is it weird that I’m pining for Vidro to play 1b? Too bad we no longer have Norton or Wilkerson to play 1b, and too bad Morse is done for the season, all 4 are better options at this point (hell even WFB is a better option)
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
This should be in the image section

I disagree
for the sole reason that by keeping it small, it will not be a bother if we want to use it often. Big photos get old quickly.
...and now I'm here
Only problem with this one is that it needs a few more frames at the end to capture the bounce
Without the bounce you almost don’t realize he’s spiking it.
Which game was this from again?
It seems like the only 1B options we have are WFB, Cairo, or Vidro
So should Vidro be playing first base? He’s not that great defensively and his bat stinks as well…Why all the complaining about Cairo if there is no clearly better alternative?
Cairo has never been able to hit
He’s a career backup MI who’s on the downside now.
Vidro at least hit well last year and for his career
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
Not as bad as Sexson's.
Similar range, and Sexson clearly has size advantage, but Vidro’s years as a MI actually help him play 1B somewhat acceptibly.
I’d rather have him there than Cairo.

I have developed a Gotterdammerung-style Mariners deathwish...
Now that it’s pretty much over for the season, I want to see us REALLY fail. Fail in all the worst ways possible. 30-3? I want to see us beaten 40-3. By the Pirates. I want us to lose more consecutive games than the 1988 Orioles. I want to see us reduced to starting AA players even more unqualified than the ones on the Giants. Hell, I want Bill Bavasi, as a final move prior to falling on his metaphorical sword in late September, acquire the Zito contract from San Francisco. And send them a prospect.
If we’re going to fail, I at least want to see us fail memorably. Because there’s nothing even remotely fun about dull failure.

Jesus Christ, I only just now noticed that MIGUEL CAIRO IS BATTING SECOND
I know, I know, batting order doesn’t matter blah blah blah BUT STILL FOR FUCK’S SAKE.
Has there ever been a good long-term free agent signing?
That was worth the money?
Alex Rodriguez if they didn't trade him?
At least we don't have Zito's contract.
check out his stats
I’m not saying he’s bad, I’m just saying it’s a bit too much money
Check out Safeco Field.
And no, it’s not.
by eponymous_coward on May 14, 2008 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions
The field has nothing to do with this.
I’m not talking about his skill, only about his contribution.
Right, and his skill is very good.
It just doesn’t look like it because Safeco kills .290/.340/.500 right handed hitters who play great defense at third.
by eponymous_coward on May 14, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions
You have to take player-park factors into account
When you judge if a contract is worth it or not.
It depends on how you look at money
For the Mariners maybe it’s not an issue, but for teams with less money, I don’t see how his contract is justified.
that's because you are worse at performance analysis than we are

Ok, well let's flip this around.
Try to convince us specifically why Adrian Beltre is not worth 5/65. Convince us why he is worth less than that. I don’t think anyone can do it.

I think he is worth 11 million or so
I’m not saying it’s a horrible deal, just a bit too much.
So if Beltre's not worth that contract, tell me someone who you think is worth that contract.

If you can think of a 3B, great.

I bet he could get 10/200
Or very close to it.

He is too expensive for what he has contributed to this team
That’s what I meant
See but we're just arguing that he's been worth his contract except for maybe 2005
What makes you think he’s too expensive for his numbers?

I'm taking 2005 into account.
If he had a 2005 like he had 2007 then I would say the contract is fair.
He's not expensive at all when you factor Safeco into his numbers..
They’re outstanding, and he’s actually a relative bargain.
I like midgets more than I should.
Defense matters....
come on we’ve gone over this
At least we don't have Zito's contract.
Johan Santana's last contract
Pedro’s contract with Boston
Alex’s first contract
Beltre
Depends
A lot of FA contracts start as bargains in their first couple years but eventually turn into overpays.

Was just posting that
I remember thinking at the time that the D-backs would regret it.
They didn’t.
Andruw Jones
OH WAIT
At least we don't have Zito's contract.
Also, the guy we signed to play RF in 2001 that was a FA from Japan was pretty good, too

DOOD THAT WAS HIS ROOKIE YEAR HE WON THE AWARD!!
I love Ichiro, but that was easily the most undeserving ROY ever given out.
I have no idea who that was.
Good thing we went with the guy we won the posting for from Japan to play RF instead.
Gameday went straight from Cairo to Ibanez
Beltre so unlucky he doesn’t even get to bat

All I know is the number next to "Mariners" is higher than the number next to "Rangers"
Not sure what that means.

I think so. We've named a ton of people who deserved their 3+ free agent contracts.
That is what you’re talking about right? That’s why we’re all here.
So you're all grammar Nazis
Shouldn’t it be “Go-ahead run on with fewer than 2 outs” rather than “less than” two outs?
In the name of the Bedard, the Felix, and the Ichiro, amen.
Thanks
These damn Rangers announcers are driving me nuts with that… I had a HS teacher who drove that into our heads…
