Griffey blows. Ken Griffey Jr is an absolutely terrible baseball player.

That can't be real

I refuse to believe that anyone with Carlos Delgado’s reputation as a generally good guy would have that person as an agent…

Is Griffey worse than GMJ right now?

Just wondering if I could somehow be thankful (relatively) for Gary.

I'm sure there is

but it the same time I find it hard to believe that Griffey has worse instincts and skills than Ibanez does.

So is Ibanez

I know he’s horrible but I refuse to believe that he is Raul horrible.

Churchill wrote

"Griffey is at least better defensively than Ibanez is.

What USSM and LL probably don’t see yet is that Griffey is at a disadvantage when it comes to all the sabr stats for defense.

Without formulating it in (it’s totally unintentional) the stats skew to players that play in bigger ballparks.

He’s got more room to cover and gets to this % of balls hit out there, so he must be better…

Ridiculous."

I do not know anything about defensive stats, just wanted someone’s take on this who knows how to measure defense, since Churchill’s is an opinion I respect.

by ASUBoyd on May 12, 2008 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Seems like it would be the opposite, and they would skew to the smaller parks

because the guys in smaller parks turn a greater % of balls in zone into outs (conceivably) because the zone is smaller

by seattlebruin on May 12, 2008 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I respect MGL's more

to say nothing of Churchill. MGL is just really smart. I tend to believe what he says.

Is Griffey worse than Andruw Jones?

I went to the Dodgers game on Saturday and holy shit Jones looks DONE. Why they continue to play him and not Eithier I do not know.

He's now everyday and Either is odd man out.

They’re both on my fantasy team, so I know this. Ha ha.

by SethGrandpa on May 12, 2008 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

For awhile Ethier was playing every day

but then when Juan Pierre started walking more they put him back in the line up and started playing Kemp every day. Andruw Jones continues to get starts for whatever reason.

I don’t understand Torre’s thinking. First Ethier is every day and Kemp is not, then it is the other way around. They both need to be in the lineup in order to give the Dodgers their best chance of winning.

Well, if you think about it, it's actually pretty obvious.

He got hurt with the Mariners right? But they were all from smashing into walls and stuff. With Cincinnati, they’ve all been stupid injuries that, with a decent training staff, could be prevented.

I doubt this is true.

Plus (forgetting the 10 years he played in the Kingdome) they had turf in Cincy too. Turf will fuck you up.

Again, make more sense, you can’t just say a bunch of random stuff and expect everyone to know what you mean.

Griffey may blow

But he’ll be a Mariner before the end of the year. Maybe even in Center Field, but probably DHing.

by Smegmalicious on May 12, 2008 4:11 PM PDT reply actions

Neyer agrees, hops on Whiffey is not M's savior bandwagon

From the Neyer…

Griffey might have some real value as a drawing card. Based on what he’s done over these last three seasons (including this one), he doesn’t have much value as an actual player, and might struggle to be an average American League hitter. I can see acquiring him only if it’s not at the expense of the young players and the M’s have concluded that they’re out of the running for a playoff spot.

Is this why Steve Phillips isn't a General Manger anymore?

TRADE JUNIOR Yes, Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the few reasons to visit Great American Ball Park, but it’s time to make the tough decisions. Griffey is signed only through this year, with a club option for 2009. As a 10-and-five player, he can veto any deal, but Chicago is a popular destination, so call White Sox GM Ken Williams, who’s tried to get Griffey in the past, and ask for Josh Fields or Carlos Quentin. The Sox have a shot, and Griffey would be huge in Chi-Town. Then call up top prospect Jay Bruce, and put him in center for the next 10 years.

Holy frak it doesn't end!

On trading Adam Dunn, Phillips says thusly…

Go to the Giants, who need offense to replace Barry Bonds, and ask for Matt Cain. Go to Toronto and request a package that includes Adam Lind and Dustin McGowan or Shawn Marcum. Call Cleveland, which is desperate for bats, and ask for Cliff Lee and one of these three: OF Franklin Gutiérrez and lefties Jeremy Sowers and Aaron Laffey.

KGJ = Raul

They’re both immobile DHs who have no business playing OF or hitting against LHP.

If the AL goes to a double DH league, getting Griffey would be great. Otherwise, it’s a disaster. The Mariners need to quit adding DHs to the roster, as they already have 3 (Raul, Turbo, Sexson), and they’ve already gone through a few more (Norton, Morse).

by eponymous_coward on May 12, 2008 4:28 PM PDT reply actions

I just had a horrible, horrible thought.

What if we traded for KGJ and had to eat both his option AND Turbo’s at the end of the season?

by BrianL on May 12, 2008 4:30 PM PDT reply actions

Well acquiring Junior would guarantee that there aren't any at bats for Turbo

because dear God, I can’t imagine they’d actually give up Clement or Balentien for him

Junior to RF

Vidro, for some bizarre reason back to DH, Wlad and Clement back to AAA

Idiotic, but nothing surprises me anymore.

by BrianL on May 12, 2008 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

It would be much worse if they traded Clement/Balentien..

Varitek was 25 and hitting .772 in AAA and Derek Lowe was getting shelled in Seattle. At least they could write it off as two “busts” at the time :(

by ASUBoyd on May 12, 2008 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeahhhhh but...

Balentien is at least on pace for 35 hrs and Clement had an over .900 OPS in AAA, so is known to be legit. Plus is 23.

Of course I know what youre sayign though. Too scary to think about haha..
