New MLS in Seattle Update
So I just got an email from them with the results of the team name vote. The new name is...
Seattle Sounders FC
Pretty cool that it got picked considering that it wasn't even one of the official options. 49% of the votes were write-ins that had some variation of Sounders in it, and 33% were for Seattle FC, so they combined the two. Sounders was my vote, so I'm pretty happy about it.

Hypothetical question
If I were to abandon my current crappy Blogger format and try and move my Seattle MLS writings to SB Nation, how many people would be interested enough to hang around on that site as well? I'm considering it, eventually, if there's enough interest...

I know nothing about soccer
but you would have my full support. I'll need a place to go when I'm banned from here.

The day you get banned from here
is the day USSM lets me out of the mod queue

Graham is a mod now
Ask nicely.

Yeah, but from what I get it's deeper than that
From my understanding DMZ has no problem with my presence, Dave wants the blog....well...to move on without me permanently. It's been a year now though. I don't think it's something Graham can overturn though

I doubt Dave actually cares.
Otherwise he wouldn't participate on here so that he can continue to avoid you.

It'll be tough
MLS plays relatively few games and doesn't get much coverage for a national league.

Some of the blogs on SBN are ghost towns though.

I actually feel myself feeling sorry
for some of the guys who are putting so much time into it yet not getting many readers at all. I hope it's not a form of schadenfreude.
Case in point, the Husky blog. I think the writer essentially gave up.

You'd have a subscriber in me.
Not sure how much I'd comment but I'd definitely read.
by ryanhealy on Apr 8, 2008 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd check it out
Probably wouldn't comment much with the frequency of the games but I'd be there.
by OlSalty on Apr 9, 2008 3:15 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would check in on it for sure.
Probably won't spend much time thinking about it until they start building a roster though.

Yeah, I wouldn't switch over until after this MLS season
IE, around November/December, when the important stuff is starting to happen.

So, how long until we get
the Portland Timbers into MLS?
Lets get PDX and Vancouver into MLS. Long live the Cascadia Cup!

When they expand to 20 teams
I could see a team going to one of Portland or Vancouver. Either would be great, rivalries are always good to help build a sport.

Thierry Henry
How about that rumor? Frankly I'll believe it when I see it
by Scrupio on Apr 8, 2008 10:23 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't shock me, he looks done in Europe. Which is really sad,
he's always been someone whose talent I respected immensely. I don't care what kind of shape he's in, the chance to see him play here for a year would be great.
by Matthew on Apr 8, 2008 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm with you
by the time he gets to Seattle, if true, he'll barely be able to walk; I'll still go see him, though. He's got sciatica, which is pretty much never going to get better until he stops running. I got to see him play in person several times, and it was beautiful to watch - he's right up there with Dennis Bergkamp on my favorite players list.

They're pretty intent on bringing in a superstar kind of guy
Dunno if Henry will actually happen, but the FO is def working on stuff like that. There's a couple of other names I've heard floated around, and they're both players I'd be real excited about...

isn't there some Japanese midfielder in consideration?
by Matthew on Apr 9, 2008 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
To both kent and Matthew - yes, Shunsuke Nakamura
I think. Mayyyyybe in consideration. I got the dreaded 'no comment' from Adrian when I asked him.
Also, based on speculation which I am currently researching/writing about, mayyyybe Riquelme.

is it just me
or is everybody tired of seeing MLS teams be used as last resting places for over-the-hill European talent?

We do the same thing to the Japanese with their baseball players
Washed up MLB players ----> Japan
Promising young Japanese players ------> MLB

about Juan Sebastian Veron?

are they from mlstraderumors.com?

Haha that site blows goats
Nakamura, mostly just speculation, since he may be out of contract and looking to sign with a J-league side. If that happens, and the Sounders flash the cash they've said they're willing to spend...
Riquelme, yes. http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/news/story?id=666443&s=gen&type=story (if you can read Spanish)
and also http://mlsseattle.blogspot.com/2008/04/more-superstar-to-seattle-speculation.html
The gist is that MLS offered 15 mil for him a few days ago. Adrian Hanauer just happens to be on his way to Argentina today....
I heard Veron was being pursued by DC United over the winter, but nothing since then... linky?

Wow, I actually like the logo.
It's not exactly the most creative, but it's not obnoxious either. Also, should Seattle just trademark the color teal?
by Liebkartoffel on Apr 9, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
we're the emerald city, in the evergreen state,
we live next to the ocean and water plays a huge role in our city. Blue and Green should be part of every color scheme here.
by Matthew on Apr 9, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, though, ahem,
Seattle technically stole "Emerald City" from Eugene. One of the things I've never understood is why, if we're the Evergreen State, our license plates don't have any fucking green in them.

Oh come on. Don't you remember the "futuristic" jerseys the M's wore years ago?
Weren't they charcoal and red or some crap like that? Made me think of Seattle right away! (end sarcasm)
I'm pretty sure I'm not retarded.
by Thingray on Apr 9, 2008 2:50 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I was more mildly amused that
they just had to cram the space needle in there. I mean, they're the Sounders, couldn't they have incorporated something to do with, I don't know, the Sound? That's why I've always like the current M's logo: it's indicative of the theme as well as the city, without being hopelessly blatant.
by Liebkartoffel on Apr 9, 2008 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good point. I wonder if Paris crams the Eiffel Tower into every logo they have?
I'm pretty sure I'm not retarded.
