There might be hope for our favorite guy

Stark looks at why Bonds hasn't been signed and talked to 3 unidentified officials. It's the same stuff that we've heard all spring but one official said he thinks Bonds will be signed, saying
"I think he is going to get signed," said Official C. "I do believe that. I think at some point, you'll see a team that loses a DH to an injury will turn to him. … I'll give you an example. Say David Ortiz goes down in Boston. I wouldn't be surprised if they signed Barry Bonds. Say Gary Sheffield goes down in Detroit. I wouldn't be surprised if they signed Barry Bonds. If Seattle stays in the race, I wouldn't be surprised if they signed Barry Bonds."It would have to be a team that has a shot to win, a team that gets to June or July and wants to upgrade at DH, or a team that has a major injury. But I really think it will happen. I really do."

Saw that too.. Hhrrrrmmmm
I would enjoy this happening before we "stayed in the race" so that we can, in fact, stay in the race.

The Chiba Lotte Marines are in the hunt!
They will sign Barry Bonds!

Awesome.
And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

Hmmm...
If the M's need a bat, I foresee them going out and getting Griffey long before they sign Bonds.

They would have to trade for Griffey
Bonds signing is just money. Therefore, that would suck and be extremely stupid.
Oh crap, that is right up Bavasi's alley!

If they get Griffey during this season
they'll officially be the dumbest FO in baseball. Why not wait till his contract's up and sign him then?

(if he has a good year) the Reds have an option for him for next year
and if I remember correctly it's not completely outrageous

The only way this could happen
is if Bavasi was so worried about his job that he got Bonds without the go-ahead. However, I actually think he could get Bonds, and get to the playoffs with Bonds, and still get fired for not being Howard's obedient little yes man. It's more likely he'd make a dumb trade like Triunfel, Clement, and Balentien for Jim Thome.
Why get an awesome bat for a few million when you can get the same bat for more money and a your entire farm system? Aw, but that Thome sure is a nice guy.

because Bavasi's contract is up after this year
so he might be getting fired regardless if the Ms don't compete for a playoff spot.

hasn't he always been on a 1 year contract?
by JI on Apr 4, 2008 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup.
it's a rolling 1-year deal.

I don't really care about who the GM is
because it's going to be someone lousy as long as Chuck and Howie are in charge of hiring the guy. The only thing I mind is the guy laying waste to the farm system, in an attempt to save his job, when we're the ones who'll still be suffering with the consequences long after he's gone.
