USSM Lives
Really, I have to write 75 words here? Doesn't the title say it all? I mean, how do you expect me to ramble on for 75 words about the fact that our site is back up.
So, instead, I'll just remind everyone that the USSM/LL get together is coming up in about 6 weeks - June 14th at a time and location TBD. It should be fun. You should all plan on coming. Jeff, Derek, and I will be there for sure, and I'd imagine Matthew will try to make it if he's around. Gomez probably won't be there - I'd bet he has a World of Warcraft meeting or a underground hipster convention to go to or something - but it will be fun anyway.
So, plan on coming.
Am I at 75 words yet? This rule blows.

You misplaced your exclamation point
Long != good where songs are concerned. Just because a guy can hammer for 8 minutes, doesn’t mean we should all have to listen to it.
And no, I don’t hate Metallica; I just find long, wanky songs to be incredibly annoying. Say what you need to say and move on.

I don't mind long songs
I mind it when songs are long for the sake of being long.
Musical exploration= good
Pointless meandering = not good
by JI on Apr 30, 2008 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And see, that's my problem
I often can’t tell the difference between exploration and meandering. When i was in Phoenix last month, some douchebag put the 20 minute long live version of the Allman Brothers’ “Whippin’ Post” on the jukebox. In a sports bar. On a Saturday night.
About 8 minutes into it, the entire bar started noticing it was still the same song…the bartender finally unplugged the damn jukebox at about the 14 minute mark, because if he didn’t I think he feared his jukebox would end up in pieces on the sidewalk.

Hahaha
In my younger days I would get drunk and fill the jukebox with as many 8 minute plus songs as I could find. Damn I love pissing people off like that.
All that said. I don’t think I ever wrote a song that lasted four minutes. Many lasted less than a minute.

One time at the Terry Tavern
my friends and I wanted a drink in peace, and the place was full of old drunk men; I put on Bat Out Of Hell in its entirety, and the place cleared out less than halfway through You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth.
There are exceptions to my “no long songs” rule – that Meat Loaf album is one, Sonic Youth is another, and there’s a few more – but by and large if it’s less than 3 or 4 minutes I’m happy.

So I give it a pass. I loved Yes as a kid and early Tool. Other than than short is sweet.

I'm biased toward Yes
Alan White went from Paul Allen’s house to my Grandma’s once. Family friend.
But, yeah, I liked their music before that too.

This is my question
Answer: It’s Phoenix, where the sports bars have neither good beer nor good jukeboxes. We get spoiled in the NW.

I used to go to a pool hall in freshman year high school and the table closest to the jukebox
And from then on – Guns’N’Roses, Rocket Queen. Again, and again, and again. If I was a grownup I probably would’ve gotten my ass kicked.

See
I’d be so much more down with ditching them if they weren’t flying up here just for the graduation. And my folks aren’t rich. And dunno about you, but I actually like my family ;P How else could I ever manage free room and board on vacations to Vegas?
All things considered, the prospects of being able to make it aren’t completely hopeless. IIRC the grad ceremony is an early event. Obviously, we’re not sure when and where on 6-14 the LL/USSM event’s going to be. If it’s close enough and the timing’s right, I may try to drag them into a doubleheader or drop them off and make it… but if it’s in Tacoma and/or if it’s a day event, well… not too sure. But IIRC we saw night games at last year’s meetups. If it’s a similar plan, it could be possible even if it’s down in Tacoma. But if it’s a daytime meet/greet… have fun!
Either way, Eric has suggested dragging my mother and brother to a game afterward. I may see at least about getting them to go to the game at Safeco that night.
by Gomez on Apr 30, 2008 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The 6/14 event will be in Seattle, probably downtown somewhere, but during the afternoon
that’s the official meetup, anyway. I’m sure a lot of people will then be going to the game afterwards but it’s not like we’re buying a bulk ticket package.
Might do something the next day, though. It’d be fun to play softball.

I like games where I can achieve something significant.
Sure, I could get my character to level 70 or whatever, but lots of people do that, and it makes no real difference to the game if I do.
This is why I play single-player RPGs almost exclusively.

Oblivion at release sort of had the same problem as games like WoW.
With the crazy level scaling, the world advanced with you, so you never got better at anything relative to the world. No matter what I did, the world didn’t really seem to care. Oblivion’s a bad example of in-game acheivement, I’m afraid.
Plus, it was far too easy to break the levelling mechanic by accident, and the initial plot hook (Hi, I threw you in prison for reasons I won’t explain. Now that I’m letting you out because I don’t have a choice, please go talk to the commander of my personal guard) was so absurd as to dissuade even the most casual role-player.
I wasn’t impressed with Oblivion.
