4/30: Open New Revolution Thread
Seattle Mariners @ Cleveland Indians
I'm not real good at service time stuff. I don't really care one way or the other if these new guys become Super Twos, but if we really did just sacrifice a year of club control for an extra ten days or so of playing time now, that's stupid. That would be a stupid decision, and I'll yell at Bill about that another time.
However, for right now - holy crap. Maybe Wlad isn't ready to hit Major League pitching. Maybe Clement isn't, either. But the Mariners - the Seattle Mariners - just cleared two spots in the lineup for their top young talent by cutting one veteran and diminishing the playing time of another. Yeah, both Wilkerson and Vidro are pretty obviously finished as decent players, but the fact that this is happening now, while we're still in the first month of the season, just blows me away. This is how you win now. You identify your problems and stock your Major League roster with the best players in the system as quickly as you can. As an ardent cynic, I have to admit that the front office just took me by surprise. I didn't think this would happen until at least the middle of June. If ever.
Bill Bavasi decided during the winter that he wanted to win in 2008, and while I don't necessarily agree that this was the right time to strike, at least he's sticking to the plan. A proper win-now mentality doesn't allow much time for struggling veterans to right the ship. A proper win-now mentality leads to moves like this. It's a broader decision with which I disagree, but a decision I respect. Bill Bavasi wants to win. And if you want to win, you need to put as much talent on the roster as you possibly can.
If it works, that's awesome. If it doesn't, we gave it our best shot. But either way, the here and now just got that much more interesting. There will be no Adam Jones situations in 2008. Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien have been freed. I guess there's only one thing left to say.
LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Well said
I agree with every word. It’s bizarre that they’d sacrifice a year of service time for this, but then, I though it was bizarre to go all-in for 2008.
Once you’ve done that, though, you better damn well get the best team out on the field. You absolutely cannot kowtow to veteran entitlement. Well done, M’s.

accd. to stone on KJR today, all we need to do to keep him for that extra year is get him his 7 days in the minors at some later date. so stop freaking out. btw, where does he stand on options?

Well then they'd have to fail - if they're successful, there's no way to
explain randomly sending them down for ten days at some future point. Especially when it would conveniently delay their arbitration by a year – like Corco pointed out earlier, it’s a grievance waiting to happen if they try it

Completely untrue.
He does not need to start the season in 2009 or 2010. Not with Johjima around. Keep him down after Spring Training for just 10 days then call him up. That’s possible, right?

I'm telling ya
Cut Burke and bring up Reed to play LF which pushed Ibanez to 1B and Sexson to DH. Clement and Kenji split catching and Clement gets a few ABs at 1B/DH. If Kenji gets hurt and we have to put Clement at catcher halfway through the game and lose the DH we’ll be ok. Its not that big of a deal.

Not all of it.
His FIP is 1.44. His K/BB rate is 14.50. His K/9 is 8.24. His GB rate is up and his LD is down. I don’t know what his tRA is, but I bet it’s pretty good too. Point is, he’s not getting lucky in the sense that Zack Greinke is getting lucky, his raw numbers all indicate that while he’s not going to continue having 1 ER all year, he’s been an excellent pitcher and has a decent shot at an ERA below 3.

Is the USS Mariner site down?
I can’t get it to load here at work so I’ve been reading Baker’s Blog and now my brain hurts. This is a particularly good one:
It sure is sad that the Mariners think bringing up some unproven kids will help them. It might for a few days but once everyone knows what these kids can do the bats will go cold. I see Mariners fans all complaining about their players and wanting help from their prospects. Prospects don’t make an offense better. You bring them up slowly to learn to hit in the majors. Just look at the struggles the Dodgers are having. And that’s been going on a couple years. Do Mariners fans just think anyone has to be better than who they have now?

However, he is about done as a hitter. That Wilk was even getting complimented for actually getting around on an inside pitch for a change says a lot about how done he is. Vidro can at least do something with his ABs and slap a ball past a fielder here and there. That’s not a bad bat to have on the bench.

Wilkerson can’t hit for AVG/SLG anymore cause he’s too old. Once pitchers figure this out the walks will disapear and he will be totally worthless. At least Vidro can make contact and will have a decent (but empty) AVG and OBP.

I knew it would've never happened because of his "clubhouse presence,"
but it would have been a much better idea to keep Norton and dump Vidro. At least Norton doesn’t have an option that’s about to vest in a few 100 ABs.

Norton can sit on the bench as well as Clement can, and at this point I’d rather see a prospect get AB’s at AAA. Especially on the road.

Yeah, this
Basically, don’t expect to see the urgency to get him in the lineup everyday that you’ll see with WLAD. WLAD is basically replacing Wilkerson. Clement will still likely see a lot of time at DH vs RHPs unless Vidro casts Lvl 8 Hotdog Power Of The Infinite and starts hitting better than he ever has. They’ll probably spot start him at C to see how far along his catching is, but a lot of his ABs will likely be at DH in a platoon with Vidro.

Are we actually pushing back the time they’ll become free agents?
by nwtrev on
Apr 30, 2008 3:26 PM PDT
reply

Essentially, yes
A player is required to have six years of service time before becoming a free agent, but the last three (right?) years the player is eligible for salary arbitration – however, this will always be lower than the the market value, and the player cannot leave of their own accord. After six years, the player is eligible for free agency. Basically, this move means that at the end of 2013 Jeff Clement and Wlad will have like 6 years and 7 days of service time, making them eligible for FA.
Otherwise they’d have like 5 years and 171 days and would have one more year of club controlled arbitration

Have there been any recent studies on the pitch calling skills of a catcher?
I know some catchers are just relaying the signals they receive from their manager/pitching coach, but I wonder if Clement’s pitch calling skills would adversely affect the M’s pitching staff one way or the other. I know Johjima has taken some heat for his pitch calling…

You have committed the unspeakable crime of attending the “University” of Southern California. The only way you can make this up is to hit a metric fucktonne of home runs for the Mariners this season. Please commence doing so immediately tonight once Wlad has regressed Cliff Lee to the mean and the Indians bring in a right handed relief pitcher.
