4/29: Open Game Thread

Seattle Mariners @ Cleveland Indians

2008 - Carlos Silva 3-0 5 5 0 0 0 0 35.0 33 11 11 3 8 15 2.83 1.17

2008 - Fausto Carmona 3-1 5 5 0 0 0 0 28.0 26 10 9 1 22 11 2.89 1.71

One of these pitchers throws strikes and doesn't throw a good sinker. One of these pitchers throws a good sinker but doesn't throw strikes. I don't have the slightest idea what's wrong with Fausto Carmona, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that today's the day he gets himself sorted out. God damn this lineup of ours. At least Asdrubal Cabrera's playing like a pile of crap.

On a side note, Travis Hafner: done? You can blame injuries for his lack of power if you want, I guess, but injuries tend to be a big part of being done. While he might still be able to get on base at a decent clip, that peak is long gone. Which makes him ideal Mariner fodder come 2010 or so.

...LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Woo game thread!

Days without these seem to just drag on forever and ever

How many innings

before I give up watching today’s game to play GTA4?

by BrianL on Apr 29, 2008 2:07 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

8

Mariners keep it close way too long then crush your heart at the very end.

At least we don't have Zito's contract.

Q

the Mariners and Indians will play Calvinball today, resulting in Q innings of untold hilarity when Mark Lowe becomes the third baseman but is forced to stand behind the plate umpire

by seattlebruin on Apr 29, 2008 2:17 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What's the over-under

on how many swings today’s home umpire will allow the away team to take before declaring a strikeout?

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 29, 2008 2:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why would they punt - they should just take a three point shot instead

if they make it, we go from the Q inning all the way to 3:14.15 on the clock

by seattlebruin on Apr 29, 2008 2:39 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, that's a good point

but what about icing?

where were you yesterday, by the way?

but mine was more succinct

so I’m up 1-0 in the moral victory column. FACIAL, LAFLEUR.

Mine was snarkier and more sarcastic

Three moral victory points for me! WHAT NOW?

Screw it, since I’m the home team, I’m also banning you from using the letter ‘m’ in your responses from here on out

Aren't you reading this thread?

McLaren rubbed the opposite pole so I’m the home team anytime the score ISN’T Q to 43 – now you have sing the I’m So Sorry song for trying to wrongly send me to the I’m So Sorry box

by seattlebruin on Apr 29, 2008 3:03 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wrong. Grudzielanek and Pierzynski aren't playing.

That’s because we have pitchers riding unicorns at 1B and 3B. Try and keep up.

by eponymous_coward on Apr 29, 2008 3:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I' trying but it's hard to keep up soeties

why are they riding unicorns? Per the official rulebook of baseball, players may only ride ythical creatures if said creatures have wings or breathe fire. It’s rule 145.P.5 paragraph Beta – go look it up.

by seattlebruin on Apr 29, 2008 3:13 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hoe tea changed that rule

Wait, wasn’t there a gae last year where Cleveland was the hoe tea in Seattle? That ust ean we are the hoe tea tonight.

You're only the hoe tea when the score is Q to 43

Ew.

The thought of McLaren rubbing ANY pole is an unpleasant one.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

by Phildopip on Apr 29, 2008 2:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, there's no more icing.

If you recall, MLB replaced chalk baselines with icing, to prevent Josh Hamilton from snorting them every time he ran to first. However, now Jose Vidro and Prince Fielder are eating the baselines.

by Eyebrows on Apr 29, 2008 2:42 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is it living up to the reviews? I’m going to try and pick it up when I get off work.

PrOPS v. Hafner

Hafner’s 2008 PrOPS line looks a lot like his 2007 line:

.266/.385/.451 - Hafner ‘07 (118 OPS+)
.286/.375/.457 - Hafner ‘08 PrOPS

So he might not be done done, but I think you’re right that his peak seems gone.

by ubelmann on Apr 29, 2008 2:16 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was just going to say...

those PrOPs lines are lack luster considering you getting zilch from a defensive value standpoint. But Hafners 07 looks great next to Vidros

by coasty141 on Apr 29, 2008 2:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Something to think about

probably a half baked idea, just wanted to see what everyone thought:

Jason Botts, DFA’d by the Rangers. Didn’t hit in the majors, but slugged in the minors:
http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=1550

Picking up Botts seems like a Bavasi idea (that is, rather than using Clement).

by Eyebrows on Apr 29, 2008 2:32 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know that.

Just was more wondering aloud if Bavasi might make that move. He does do stupid things.

I did

you just don’t realize it because the memory of what hot dogs used to be has been erased from your brain.

by Jeff on Apr 29, 2008 3:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But if you altered the past

shouldn’t that knowledge already be with me? Shouldn’t I be unaware that hotdogs were once unhealthy? Or are you in the new timeline and I’m trapped in the old (shitty) one?

by JI on Apr 29, 2008 3:30 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

LL is a transdimensional fissure in the space time continuum where you can comment on however the Mariners may be doing in your particular reality.

You need to get better at manipulating the 8th dimension

once you get that done, it’s quite easily to move universes at will.
