4/29: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Cleveland Indians, Apr 29, 2008 4:05 PM PDT
One of these pitchers throws strikes and doesn't throw a good sinker. One of these pitchers throws a good sinker but doesn't throw strikes. I don't have the slightest idea what's wrong with Fausto Carmona, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that today's the day he gets himself sorted out. God damn this lineup of ours. At least Asdrubal Cabrera's playing like a pile of crap.
On a side note, Travis Hafner: done? You can blame injuries for his lack of power if you want, I guess, but injuries tend to be a big part of being done. While he might still be able to get on base at a decent clip, that peak is long gone. Which makes him ideal Mariner fodder come 2010 or so.
...LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Woo game thread!
Days without these seem to just drag on forever and ever
How many innings
before I give up watching today’s game to play GTA4?
Q
the Mariners and Indians will play Calvinball today, resulting in Q innings of untold hilarity when Mark Lowe becomes the third baseman but is forced to stand behind the plate umpire
by seattlebruin on Apr 29, 2008 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions
What's the over-under
on how many swings today’s home umpire will allow the away team to take before declaring a strikeout?
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Does that mean they move the pitcher's mound to behind second?

Only if the away team decides that they want to punt.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Why would they punt - they should just take a three point shot instead
if they make it, we go from the Q inning all the way to 3:14.15 on the clock

Well, that's a good point
but what about icing?

No, there's no more icing.
If you recall, MLB replaced chalk baselines with icing, to prevent Josh Hamilton from snorting them every time he ran to first. However, now Jose Vidro and Prince Fielder are eating the baselines.

So that's why Vidro stopped getting all those infield hits

How is GTA4?
Is it living up to the reviews? I’m going to try and pick it up when I get off work.
I have no idea.
I picked it up on my way to work today and haven’t had a chance to play it.
Just got done with about 10 missions
It sucks ass man.
Just kidding, 10 missions through and so far it’s more awesome than GTA 3 or San Andreas
So you're saying we are going to sign Hafner soon?
I fucking hate you Mariners
Atleast he's a lefty
So Bavasi can justify the signing when 2010 comes around. Its too bad because he is on my fantasy team.
PrOPS v. Hafner
Hafner’s 2008 PrOPS line looks a lot like his 2007 line:
.266/.385/.451 - Hafner ‘07 (118 OPS+)
.286/.375/.457 - Hafner ‘08 PrOPS
So he might not be done done, but I think you’re right that his peak seems gone.
I was just going to say...
those PrOPs lines are lack luster considering you getting zilch from a defensive value standpoint. But Hafners 07 looks great next to Vidros
Something to think about
probably a half baked idea, just wanted to see what everyone thought:
Jason Botts, DFA’d by the Rangers. Didn’t hit in the majors, but slugged in the minors:
http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=1550
Picking up Botts seems like a Bavasi idea (that is, rather than using Clement).
the other angels fan
I know that.
Just was more wondering aloud if Bavasi might make that move. He does do stupid things.

You know Fausto’s having control problems, and you’re ahead 2-0 in the count. And you swing at a pitch in the dirt.

I walked over to Bavasi after that and asked him flat-out whether service time or “Super Two’’ status would have any impact on a decision to call a player up from Class AAA. Bavasi responded that, if a club had to need to feel, the answer is “it has no impact on a decision.’‘
Well that’s retarded.

I have to look this up...
I swear that September doesn’t count for service time. Researching…..
You know what?
I just read article XXI – Credited Major League Service…..
There is no mention of September call-ups not getting service time counted. I am going to say that I am 95% certain that was the case in the last CBA.
I’m guessing that September now does count for service time so that makes this May 7th theory valid.

How much you want to bet the M's call the kids up on May 5 at the start of the homestand?
Though I thought time on the ML roster as a September expansion call up didn’t count toward service time. Guess not, oh well. I guess we should wait.
The fan in me would be really excited to see him up tomorrow though, even if it’d be stupid.

Ok the M's media guide has him listed at 27 days of service time. You need 172 for a full year.
There are 152 days left in this season. If we called him up today he’d end up with 179 days of service time at the end of the year, just over one year. So May 7 is right. Unless we just get him extended ala Evan Longoria the right decision is to just wait.
So you can expect him up before then.
