Wlad, Clement, Jimerson, Reed, and even fucking LaHair all have OPSes over .900

How the fuck are they still in Tacoma? I know Minors != Majors, but jesus christ these kids are beating the snot out of the ball, what the fuck does it take to get them up? How do we off some veterans on the big club while simultaneously avoiding legal issues? Wlad, Clement, and Reed should all find a starting spot in Seattle with Jimerson on the bench…and as bad as LaHair is, at least a .680 OPS from him might be exciting, simply because we don’t know how he’ll get to it…

The Kenji exstension fucks all this shit up though.

C Clement
RF Wlad
LF Reed
DH Raul
1B LaHair if Sexson falls under .650 OPS

Kenji throws a wrench in all this shit. Fuck you Kenji. I guess the best we can get is…

C Kenji
LF Reed
RF Wlad
DH Ibanez
1B Clement.

I need to go to sleep before I rant about more stupid shit…but god damn this team makes me want to blow up everything even if I have to do it slowly with mini firecrackers or some shit.

Let's not forget

that the league average OPS in the PCL is .782, and the league average OPS in the AL is .732, so you have to regress any PCL OPS by almost 7% without even accounting for the difference in pitching between AAA and MLB.

by naviomelo on Apr 29, 2008 1:02 AM PDT up reply actions

If this is true and your 15% idea you've told me is real, then our Minor Leaguers have performed at this level

as measured by what their OPS would probably be in the majors:

Wlad: .801
Reed: .789
Jimerson: .830
Clement: 1.042 (!!)
LaHair: .785

Of course this assumes that is their true talent level that they’re performing at right now, and while they’re all good players it’d be ridiculous to expect them to stay that good all season.

Oh by the way, just so people know they come from Real OPSes of

Wlad: 948
Reed: .929
Jimerson: .977
Clement: 1.227 (!!)
LaHair: .923

Again though

check the home/road splits. Tacoma is indeed a pitcher’s park (though not last night), but the rest of the league includes some remarkable hitting environments.
Clement especially is just a different hitter at home than he is on the road.

I'd be interested to see how you'd create

a single, unified park factor from the H/2B/HR/BB/K park factors at, say, MiLBsplits.

FWIW, the 2004 baseball america park factor for tacoma (that’s the only one I’ve seen that just makes it one number) was 859.
Sure, the league context is much higher, as Gomez mentioned (league factor: 1070). But… 859!

So Wlad and Clement went 6-11 with 3 hr a double and 6 rbi’s, why havent we called them up yesterday? Hell at this point Jeremy Reed and Charlton Jimerson are looking good, and would be an improvement.

Don't forget Clement's BB

That wussy couldn’t even get the bat off his shoulders, he’ll be in Tacoma till he learns to hack like a Mariner.

How good

is Nick Adenhart? I can’t find any GB/FB/LD information for him, but Angel fan is always crowing about this guy. 15 BB, 19 K in 31 IP? He’s only allowed 18 hits in 31 IP though.

by naviomelo on Apr 29, 2008 12:57 AM PDT reply actions

He's fascinating

he’s got amazing stuff, but the TTO stuff is awful this year. I’m really curious to see him when they come through.

He’s a slight GB pitcher this year, and that’s about where he’s been – above average, but nothing eye-popping.
The TTO results have never matched the scouting hype, but at some point, you’ve got to acknowledge that the scouts may be right. I’m still not sure any of this screams ‘ace’ and his reputation is certainly improved by his age-relative-to-league and the fact that he came off of TJ surgery years back.

Somebody on Baker's Blog...

...stated that the M’s have to wait until after May 7th to call up Jeff Clement if they want to emulate the Rays and knock his Free Agency back a year. If they do it before then, his time on the 25 man roster from last year will combine with this year to knock out an indentured service year.

I have no idea if this is valid or not, but I thought that was interesting.

by Defenestrator on Apr 29, 2008 1:15 AM PDT reply actions

It was J that posted that

And I don’t see why that fucking matters, honestly. Clement is 24 years old. Whether we have him until 30 or 31 isn’t that big a fucking difference. Besides, the Mariners, if they stay true to their forms, will lock him up at least one or two years of his free agency with a healthy contract.

I think Bavasi’s balking for other reasons.

Fans are typically idiots.

It matters for arbitration

If we can get him cheap for 3.5 years it’s better than cheap for 2.75

by Graham MacAree on Apr 29, 2008 1:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Bill Bavasi hates arbitration

He’s going to buy out those years anyway (assuming he’s still around).

I'm not sure of the whole service time thing

but according to Baker and his calculations to avoid Clement becoming a “super 2” he’d have to stay down until around mid June… if you figure he’ll be on the 25 man full time in 2009-2010.

The whole service time is probably the most confusing thing in my opinion.

It is really too bad that the Seattle area fans are more interested in the wave and rally fries

than winning. ‘cause an awesome protest to the quality of play in Seattle would be for the fans to boycott SafeCo and instead drive down to Tacoma and sell out every Raniers game. I bet that would send a message.

by thewyrm on Apr 29, 2008 2:07 AM PDT reply actions

Went to the Tacoma game last night

it’s a pitchers park, but the winds can do some Things. This is how, for example, Shin-Soo Choo hit a ball over the fence in dead center one time.

Last night for the first five innings, the wind was HOWLING and blowing from center to right. Wlad’s first HR went right into the teeth of that wind to left-center. Just a line drive that scraped over the wall. Next batter up was LaHair who skied a ball to right…and it caught the jet stream and went out.
Then, in the fifth or so, the wind changed direction and was blowing straight out. Wlad hit another line drive that was never more than 5 feet above the wall, Jimerson hit a moonshot to right center (he hit it well, but it wouldn’t have been out any other day), Reed doubled off the wall, etc. etc.

Wlad’s third HR was inside-the-park.

Tui hit a ball to dead center that must’ve gone about 415 feet. I’ve always been suspicious of his ability to drive a ball, and so he goes and hits one that would’ve been out of any other park in associated baseball. Of course, he also dropped a fly ball in foul territory that resulted in him falling flat on his back. Good to see him get a few hits at home, though.

Rohrbaugh looked…bad. No command, had basically no change-up. Just FB (that he couldn’t spot) and curve. I’ll give him credit for getting out of there with only 4R allowed.

Clement’s weird; he just doesn’t look, visually, as impressive as some of the other hitters. He’s on top of the ball a lot, and he goes to the opposite field often as well. I don’t begrudge a hitting prospect for using the whole field, but he just doesn’t hit the ball really hard all that often. Hence the home slg% of .361 vs. road slg % of .976. I really need to see a road game or two.

Was at the game too...

totally agree with you on Clement. The double was hit pretty well, but one hit was a bloop single and he hit a little nubber with the bases loaded. Wlad is a beast and even though that first ball barely cleared the wall, it was into the wind. He hits line drive homers that get out of the park quickly.

First base side, just under the overhang...

a bunch of guys near us were joking about the Zephyrs shortstop and his “outstanding” fielding

So someone on Baker's blog

is saying that KJR is saying that Clement will be called up in the next day or two….. anyone down in Seattle hear anything about that on KJR?

KJR says a lot of things

I’ll believe it when I see Clement wearing a Mariners uniform in my line of sight.

oh I didn't believe it either

I was just wondering if they were actually saying that on the air….

May 8, 2008 = Jeff Clement Day

Unless they plan on shuttling him back and forth, that’s the date. As Baker mentions on his blog—it’s the day after 2014 becomes his first free agent year, were he to spend the rest of 2008 up in Seattle.

Although, really, it makes too much sense, so Bavasi’s probably either a) working the phones and trying to trade him for someone or b) going to call him up and completely ignore that little detail.
