George Sherrill is not a very good closer

It's just fact. I think we get caught up in how much we miss him in his lefty specialist role, but outside of dominating Seattle, he's been awful. Just blew a save against the White Sox and has been really roughed up by the Yankees and Toronto as well. I wish the best for George, but his current situation is going to hurt his career at least somewhat and future value I'm afraid.

I don't think I care.

It’s still a bad trade, he’s still awesome.

Yeah

He covered a lot of LHBs late in games. That had more value to us than he does to BAL as a closer.

by Gomez on Apr 28, 2008 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow

Daniel Cabrera had 7 BB and 2 K in the game. Someone is garbage…I don’t think it’s Sherrill :)

Wow...

Um, the blowup in NY was weather-related. It was pouring down rain and things just weren’t right. He’ll have games like that, sure.

Haven’t heard what happened today, yet, but he surrendered a HR to Uribe. That happens. He wasn’t going to be perfect.

He always starts off the season a little rough. I’m not worried at all. He’ll be fine. This was the first save he’s blown all season. I expected it to happen at some point.

He’s not Putz or Papelbon, but, well, JJ hasn’t been Putz, either lately. He still deserves the shot he’s been given and things will sort themselves out fine, too. Besides—he’s one of those types of pitchers that fools umpires all the time. He’s only now starting to get some of the borderline calls. Having to throw 4-5 strikes to get a strikeout can really wear someone out, too.

It's a curse.

Whoever is the closer for the Orioles sucks. You could put some of the greatest relievers in history-Gossage, Fingers, Eckersley-out there and they would suck too.

Cheeseburgers are delicious.

by Coach Owens on Apr 28, 2008 7:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This was unwarranted.

There was nothing wrong with his comment.

by CapSea on Apr 28, 2008 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I also disagree

It is common knowledge that saying all O’s suck (not just closers). There may be a few exceptions to the rule but in general it will serve you well.

by Edgar for Pres on Apr 29, 2008 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a common mistake on LL.

Why is that? And is that considered a grammar mistake or a spelling mistake?

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 28, 2008 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm inclined to say grammar

and I think it’s a common mistake everywhere.

Doesn’t make it less funny, though.

Yeah, it's grammar.

I blame English more for just being fucked up, though.

Misusing "literally" really pisses me off:

“Boy, the M’s literally slapped us around today!”

as wells as not being able to tell the difference between a subject and a fucking object:

“Thanks for taking Billy and I to see Felix Pitch.”

I continue to insist that was a brilliantly written song.

It was all about irony, but it kept defining irony incorrectly. That is hugely ironic.

It’s like meta-irony.

by Llewdor on Apr 29, 2008 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Irony is when something occurs that you wouldn't expect to occur.

So wouldn’t it be ironic if you woke up one morning and everyone was 10 feet tall and orange? But that doesn’t seem like how it’s normally used

by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Apr 28, 2008 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever, something different.

We don't negotiate with terrorists.

by Mariner John on Apr 28, 2008 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, it would be more accurate

If you had taken measures specifically to avoid having everyone be 10 feet tall and orange.

Or maybe I fail irony.

We don't negotiate with terrorists.

by Mariner John on Apr 28, 2008 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would be ironic if you were racist against orange men,

and did not have the ability to look up.

Or if you had always wanted to be a 10 foot tall orange man, then refused to eat the radioactive carrot soup on radioactive carrot soup eating day.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 28, 2008 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In a broad sense, yes,

but irony generally plays upon predefined and routinized social and linguistic conventions. If I walk into a bar, pick up a glass, start cleaning it, and proceed to ask the bartender for his life story, that’s ironic.

by Liebkartoffel on Apr 28, 2008 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Irony is a statement that contradicts the context

For example, talking about how you watch your diet… while eating a bacon cheeseburger.

by Gomez on Apr 29, 2008 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They both mean just about the same thing.

It’s a better bet to just stick with ironic, though.

by Liebkartoffel on Apr 28, 2008 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Many of the words we currently use that end in ical had the as added to them

by Shakespeare to make his meter. Tyrannical used to be just tyrannic. Diabolical used to be always just diabolic. Ironical is the same construction; there’s no need for those last two letters.

by Llewdor on Apr 29, 2008 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chris Ray

and BJ Ryan were pretty good.

by oompagooba on Apr 28, 2008 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chris Ray posted FIPs of 4.90 and 4.07.

J.J., in his two years as closer so far, posted FIPs of 1.78 and 2.63. Chris Ray was not good. B.J. Ryan was the closer for one year, although he was pretty good.

Cheeseburgers are delicious.

"his current situation is going to hurt his career at least somewhat and future value I'm afraid."

Really? A bad closer will always make more than a good LOOGY. By a ton. He could blow half his saves, but in baseball today, if your business card says “closer,” you’re going to get some money.

by Teej on Apr 28, 2008 10:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

One more thing...

Park factors=important here.

Chicago’s where they’re playing.

The HR would’ve been an out, or at VERY WORST off the wall in Safeco or a few other parks.

Ill Ligitamus Non Carberendum

by PositivePaul on Apr 29, 2008 12:07 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not even close.

Did you see that homer? It was at least 15 rows deep in left field. That thing was out in any ballpark, by a a significant amount. It wasn’t even close to borderline.

by weebs on Apr 29, 2008 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that wasn't the park.

That was a horrible hanging slider.

It happens…

GS52 still has more saves than Putz.

Strike%, StS%, Cntc% rates all considerably worse

Sherrill’s not that great of a pitcher when he has to face so many righties.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 29, 2008 9:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Unless they're (not there or their) Mariners?

I wonder how he would’ve fared without the benefit of facing the Mariners 5 times.

by JoshC on Apr 29, 2008 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

GS52 as closer

is fine. Any sidearmer will get exposed a bit facing opposite handed hitters. He’s just facing the learning curve now that he HAS to face them, rather than being spotted against LHBs like he was with Seattle.

He’ll develop his changeup and location, because he won’t have a choice.

by Gomez on Apr 29, 2008 4:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Glad someone else sees this...

I’m almost as biased as elsid. Almost. But the fact that he’s finally getting regular time against RH batters, is great—he’ll make the necessary adjustments.

More IPs/BFPs = more experience. He’s got the talent and the arsenal, he just needs a little more experience. As he progresses in the season, he’ll be fine vs. RH hitters.

Or maybe he'll lose his command

And get sent down to AA like his replacement in Seattle.

by PositivePaul on Apr 29, 2008 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Sherrill just as much as the next guy

but more exposure to right-handed hitters is not a good thing. While I want him to succeed, I wouldn’t be surprised if he struggled.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 29, 2008 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He'll struggle, sure.

I concede that he’s not the über-ace that Putz and Papelbon are. But while his splits vs. RH hitters are noticeable, he’s not terrible against them. He has rough ABs against them, sure, but the more he faces them, the more polished his stuff gets against them.

It’s sorta like Helton’s home/away splits. No, he didn’t put numbers away from Coors like he did at home. But his road splits were still pretty impressive. Unlike, say, Michael Young…
