4/25: Open Game Thread

Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners, Apr 25, 2008 7:10 PM PDT

In news that's actually interesting, Francisco Liriano may or may not be completely boned. A full year and a half after his surgery, his slider sucks, he's lost 4% of his fastball, and he can't throw strikes to save his life. To think it's been Felix whose mechanics have been the most widely criticized since becoming a phenom. For as much as people love to talk about throwing motions and what they mean for durability, I don't think you could find a more inexact science if you tried. If you're thinking about looking at a guy's delivery in order to determine his future health, take Graham's advice and don't bother.

One day away from the return of the 1-2 punch.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

today I’m missing the game. So I’m trusting you guys with the game thread.

This is a test. Don’t make me regret it.

There better be some serious gooning tomorrow

Downie’s supposedly gonna be in the lineup

Hahahahaha

I like Downie. His hit on McAmmond was clean.

I actually do like Downie…Boulerice’s “hit” on Kesler was the worse one IMO

There are obviously worse thugs

but the whole McAmmond makes Downie enemy #1 in my book. Dean McAmmond is as cool as it gets.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 25, 2008 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I get it. Honestly I didn't think it was a TERRIBLE hit,

but it was clearly dirty and obviously it’s never good when someone gets hurt.

Speaking of dirty players, WORST PLAYER EVER:

1. Darcy Tucker and Bryan Marchment (tie)
2. Scott Stevens

Downie was just trying to get noticed in training camp

I hate him but at least I get why he did what he did.

I’m biased against people who goon the Sens. So Tucker and Pronger are right up there with Downie at the top of my list.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 25, 2008 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I’ll always have respect for Pronger sfter that Red Wing playoff game where his heart stopped. I think I was like 7 or 8 and I was stunned that a guy would take a 100 mph shot in the chest.

Go Nova

by dbroncos31 on Apr 25, 2008 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Shots like that are why I have respect for Al McInnis.

Respect the guy who fires the shot, not the guy who gets knocked out of the game by it.

McInnis once knocked Curtis Joseph out of a game with a slapshot that destroyed Cujo’s mask.

by Llewdor on Apr 25, 2008 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh don't get me wrong.

Al MacInnis was one of my favorite players growing up. But it takes serious balls to put your body in front of one of those, and the image of Pronger spitting up blood while collapsing to the ice will always stick with me.

Why is it that people taunt social science majors

So...

according to the AP Kenji’s contract extension is 3yr/24mil,

and according to Baker who spoke with Frank Thomas he didn’t think the Mariners were a good fit for him because they wouldn’t guarantee him full-time playing time, and he didn’t want to be in a platoon situation with Vidro, and he didn’t know what the club dynamics would be, he felt more comfortable with Oakland cause he’d been there before.

I think its pretty much a given at this point

Clement won’t catch for the M’s…. he’ll either move to 1st (which I believe he said this spring he doesn’t want to do), or the M’s will trade him for something they feel they need.

After all my years of optimism this organization just cracks me up its gotten me officially to the point where I’m “meh”, I’ll watch the games but I don’t really feel the investment in them I’ve felt before.

“I would guess that at some point along the way, because of Jeff’s bat - and assuming Kenji plays the way he can - Jeff’s going to get exposed to another position at some point,’’ Bavasi said. “But we have not given up on him as a catcher. A lefthanded hitting catcher with power, those are real tough to find. So, this doesn’t change Jeff’s track to the big leagues much at all. Because his track to the big leagues is with his bat more than his glove anyway.’‘

Good thing Miguel found the new secret of pitching longevity

He easily can pitch 250-300 pitches per game, no worries for the bullpen tonight

Too close to take. Knee height and just on the corner. At least he fouled it off.

So:

Not GTE – when I started this year, I was incredibly excited – but, at the same time, honestly thought the team would only win 78 games.

Now I’m debating whether I even want to watch this team this year, and I expect 75 at best.

I’m not trying to be pessimistic or throw in the towel. At this point, this is genuinely how I feel. There’s something incredibly wrong with that considering it is not even the end of April.
