It's offical

Coach Owens is the GM

I actually might consider that.

While Olerud sucks, he might actually help with the glove…

LIES, LIES, LIES!!!

Three years? Don’t do this to Clement, please!

These moves don't hurt anymore

they’re just high comedy.

This is Graham's fault. He can't buy jerseys ever again.

I have a Sherrill and a Blackley jersey.

Whoops.

My autographed ball collection:

Snelling, Blackley, Nageotte, Madritsch.

I think any Rainiers player should RUN from me.

by marc w on Apr 25, 2008 2:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'll trade you a Craig Anderson ball for the Madritsch one.

Heh. I’ve got Reed and Adam Jones from autographed ball night.

The Sherrill ball eluded me, though…

are we overreacting a little bit?

I don’t think this is THAT bad of a move.

FREE JEREMY REED!!

It's a terrible move. He's going to be 33 next year. Catcher's don't last.

That's a good point as well.

Plus didn’t Kenji have a really heavy workload in Japan as well?

by Thingray on Apr 25, 2008 1:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

terrible seems a bit harsh

I’m not saying I like extending Kenji, but this team has done dumber things.

He could still be traded at some point, although knowing the M’s, I doubt that happens.

Well if you enjoy a .720 OPS coming from the #5 spot in your lineup, enjoy this exstension.

Seriously, he’s a dead-pull righty in Safeco field who is a catcher and going to be thirty-fucking-three next year.

I dunno

they were willing to bench Dan Wilson for Ben Davis in 04, Ben Davis just chose to flame out

I can see it happening

But Dan was what, 36?

And they hadn’t just signed him to a three-year extension either.

at this point, but maybe then they give him time?

by Goose on Apr 25, 2008 1:08 PM PDT   0 recs

Rotoworld sums it up nicely.

“The Mariners are set to sign Kenji Johjima to a three-year extension, FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reports.
Well, then they might as well call up Jeff Clement and make him their DH right now. He won’t have a future at catcher in the organization with Johjima locked up through 2011. This could prove to be the biggest blunder yet from Bill Bavasi, which is really saying something. Johjima has been just terrible at the plate, and has looked at least as bad as the numbers (.200/.268/.246) suggest. Signing him through his age-35 season has the potential for disaster. “

by PositivePaul on Apr 25, 2008 2:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Out on a limb here:

Does this maybe mean that they are really high on some other catcher in the system, and want to transition Clement to 1st or DH (what a waste). And if that’s the case, why is he catching more days than ever down in AAA?

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!!

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Apr 25, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I understand

Kenji = veteran who doesn’t suck, and is liked by the fans, therefore we must keep him until he is hitting .210/.211/.300 and there’s no hope of a bounce back.

I'm frankly a little shocked if it's three years.

I could see a one year extension just to have some insurance if Clement didn’t work out, but not three.

So if Joh is signed to an extension

does that mean Clement is on the trade block? (seeing as how, following the Joh logic, an Ibanez and/or Vidro extension must be imminent).

is traded for a fungable relief arm at the deadline after Rhodes goes Rick White on us.

Hmmm

1. Ichiro - CF
2. Lopez - 2B
3. Ibanez - DH
4. Beltre - 3B
5. Clement - 1B
6. Griffey - LF
7. Balentien - RF
8. Johjima - C
9. Betancourt—SS

I want Tex as much as the next guy, but I don’t think the M’s have much of a chance.

“As an organization, we view quality Major League catching as a scarce commodity,” Bavasi said. “This extension allows us to feel very comfortable with our catching depth for the foreseeable future.”
