Putz in, Dickey-time over

Team is dumb.  Seattle gets a lot of rain. Dane Cook isn't funny.  Etc.

Your FanPost must be at least 75 words long. Right now it's only 15 words long.  But I don't have anything else to say about this.  The Mariners made a roster move I disagree with. WTF!?!?!?!?!!1

I just noticed that Putz is Replacing Dickey on the Mound.

There’s an irony there that needs some sort of inappropriate terminology. Maybe a Rosterbanger? A Rostergy?

God Damnit

I’m embarrassed.

I’m blaming the three month old in my lap.

Holy crap

Baker is absolutely ripping this roster move.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Baker this livid with a Mariners move before.

Ha, he used "Best guys out there" correctly.

Go Geoff! Keep up the good work!!!!

I just read the Adam Jones post. Let’s hope that’s been replaced by the bet guys out there stance.

I don't know why

but I decided to wade through the asshattery on Baker’s blog today. Had some good discussions, then some total idiocy concerning Clement.

I do that too, occasionally.

Regardless, using AJ’s current numbers was a very, very poor argument, and saying that Ibanez did not cost this team wins even though he can’t get to the ball is ridiculously misguided at best. It’s not a reasoned argument at all, he shouldn’t have brought it up again.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 22, 2008 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn't even going to touch that argument.

If you don’t understand why Ibanez’s defense hurts this team, there’s no way in hell I can explain it to you.

It’s way more than “a hit that dropped in front of Ibanez in the 9th ended up scoring.” His defense forces pitchers to get extra outs, and as the old baseball adage says: you don’t give the opposing team extra outs.

by BrianL on Apr 22, 2008 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly - extra pitches, extra baserunners, extra pressure, extra opportunity.

This should be common sense so anyone, that’s why I didn’t like that article at all. No matter how good a beat writer he is, he purposely brought up an argument that goes against common sense. Even the website chronies were calling him out on that one, and that almost never happens.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 22, 2008 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely wasn't one of Geoff's better articles.

Like you I was pretty surprised to see a lot of the blog regulars bashing Baker over the head with that writeup.

I generally like the work Baker does, but that wasn’t a very good entry by him today.

by BrianL on Apr 22, 2008 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, he was insulting our intelligence

And calling us out for being wrong on a common sense argument which we’re clearly not. It would be like going on USSM after Felix got injured last year and saying “see, this is why we should only trust veterans. Notice how he got hurt, which is the risk these young people take.”

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 22, 2008 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was pretty disappointed, not going to lie.

My junior year AP English teacher would have roasted me over the coals for making fallacious arguments like that.

How the fuck did Geoff determine

that Ibanez’s defense didn’t hurt us???

It’s one of the craziest things he’s ever said.

by JI on Apr 22, 2008 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Washburn

begs to differ with Geoff.

by BrianL on Apr 22, 2008 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If no runs score, or if they do the difference in runs is < the difference in the game

he decides it did not. He also only includes balls that he clearly didn’t get to. But more importantly, if we are up 8-0, and Ibanez misplays cause us to win 8-4, he considers that not at all a problem.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 22, 2008 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But even if those guys didn't score

in “clutch” situations, the extra baserunners are still running up pitch count and flipping the lineup over.

by JI on Apr 22, 2008 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There are so many faults in that argument.

Say an Ibanez misplay causes the score to go from 8-4 and you have to pull the starter as a result. Now you’re getting into the bullpen. What could have been a potential day off for the pen turns into what could be a long night. That subsequently transfers into the next game, with some members of the pen potentially being unavailable because they were called in the game prior.

Extra outs have a far greater effect than Geoff realizes.

I think he's come along way

you should read some of the article that were linked on USSM when he was first hired.

It's probably about as good a dialogue as you're gonna get

from a major newspaper blog.

Thank God for Adam.

Also, Resin can go fuck himself.

He's 17 kinds of stupid.

I don’t want to name them all, but that’s an impressive amount of stupid.

Got into an argument last night over Churchill's stuff.

He was getting pissy over the fact Jason charges for PI (a measly ten bucks, well worth it for me).

Yeah I like to post over there

but the narrow mindedness of the casual fan definitely makes in depth conversation a challenge. It is fun to make fun of people though.

We're not sure he's real.

I think he is, but JI, I believe, is fairly positive he’s supposed to be satire.

But I saw him comment recently and he pretty clearly called out some people and insulted them in non-satirical ways, so I’m still fairly positive he’s real.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Apr 22, 2008 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not satire

in so much as a character played for one’s own amusement.

by JI on Apr 22, 2008 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whether or not it was the right move

I agree that it’s great to see Baker take a stand like that.

Though I don’t agree with a lot of what he says, my respect level for him did go up a bit.

by BrianL on Apr 22, 2008 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait..

I thought Baker was supposed to be an idiot and another shill for the M’s PR department. W….. T…... F?

Baker has to disagree on somethings

So he doesn’t look like a shill for the M’s PR.

No, but seriously, if Baker even sees this as a bad move, then this is a clearly a horrible move.

by Fin on Apr 22, 2008 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Baker

I’d rather keep Baek up and not lose him on waivers, and send Dickey down with his options.

I do agree that Dickey’s more of an asset to this team, while Baek is pretty much not. But you gotta hold on to the guys.

And one last piece of innuendo if it hasn’t been covered, Baker likes it when that Dickey gives him “long relief.”
