FFT: Frank Fucking Thomas

This Big Som'bitch Wants To Cure Your Turbo-Malo:

hey Bill-0... you awake?  quit sleeping, son...

Star-divide

Thomas played first base during the early part of his career and was not known for his defense. He never won a Gold Glove at the position, and has played primarily as a designated hitter since turning 30 years old. Rather, Thomas is known for his offensive performance; some regard him as one of the best pure hitters in baseball's history. Thomas is the only player in major league history to have seven consecutive seasons of a .300 average, and at least 100 walks, 100 runs, 100 runs batted in, and 20 home runs (from 1991 to 1997). The only other player to have more than five consecutive seasons accomplishing this feat was Ted Williams with six. This accomplishment is even more remarkable considering that despite playing only 113 games in 1994, due to the labor stoppage which curtailed that season prematurely, he still was able to attain these lofty numbers, thereby keeping the streak alive. Additionally, there are only five players in history who have both hit more home runs and have a higher career batting average than Thomas (Hank Aaron, Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams).

Does Frank Thomas strike out a lot?  Is Thomas an asshole in the clubhouse?  Yes, and maybe.  Never met the guy.  But I do know that Barry Bonds was an asshole, is an asshole and will be an asshole.  His assholishness tends to overshadow all else.  LL dwellers have been praying at the BB altar for some time now, so, yeah.  FFT, y'all.

Barry Bonds Frank Thomas Platoon for DH!

(I know this makes no sense)
A much better version of Carl Everett

Thomas is also not nearly the hitter that bonds is

and bonds can still play the outfield better than Ibanez can. Bonds also happens to be a lefty, thus better suited to play here.

All that said, it’s far more likely that Thomas ends up here rather than Bonds, though I doubt it will happen. Getting a guy like him and letting Turbo ride pine as our Professional (Pinch) Hitter would definitely improve the team.

I would enjoy having someone that big on the team.

Frank Thomas is a huge guy. His thighs are each the size of Ichiro.

I thought I was the only one who supports Reed in LF.

I was afraid if I said anything flesh-eating ponies would be sent my way.

Cheap LF replacement with good defense to get Raul out of left.

I doubt anyone prays for him but you could do significantly worse.

Well...

Jeremy Reed, Ballboy

Reed does shag the balls pretty well in the OF. Seems to be hitting OK in Tacoma, too.

I wonder how he fits it all in his hats.

He must get them a size larger, so as to contain his glorious waves of flaxen beauty.

Frank Thomas and I have two things in common.

We share a Birthday and we are both well past our peak.

He may very well be an upgrade over Turbo, but that is no more than a baby step. We need a major upgrade.

meh, Thomas is the fence

Bonds adds more with the bat.
Reed (Raul to DH) adds more with the glove.

Both of those options are available.

With this org

I really think that Thomas is the best we can do until July when we try to trade WLAD or Clement for someone really veterany.

I'd rather have

Clement if we’re going to go with a new DH…. bring up Clement and Wlad (when healthy)...

Clement to DH… Wlad to RF…. adds alot more pop to the offense, better defense in RF.. and Clement can rotate with Joh at catcher…. replace Cairo and Wilkerson on the roster.

Baek needs to get traded for something if they’re never going to use him.

Would it make any sense to keep Baek and trade Washburn?

Only financially.

Obviously financially.

The question is: how much worse is Baek than Washburn?
Baek’s xFIP numbers look better, but obviously there are SSS issues with those numbers.

He's not worse than Washburn

I think that, if anything, Baek wins on K%, and definitely wins on BB%. The only question is whether Baek can be ‘expected’ to have higher HR rates. I say no, given that Washburn is not exactly amazing at keeping the ball in the park himself.

by marc w on Apr 21, 2008 1:48 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There's quite a difference between "durability" and "endurance"

Washburn has durability (so far in his contract), Baek has neither.

Just like it saps Richie's???

Certainly it won’t help his BA, but FT’s got enough power to hit it out of any ballpark. No, the park won’t help him like it does Raul, but it won’t hurt his HR power.

Which helps you perhaps 30-40 times a year

at best (assuming he still possesses the consistent ability to hit 40 jacks, and doesn’t get hurt). Otherwise, he’s hitting a lot of cans of corn, and he doesn’t have the speed or defensive ability to give him makeup value.

by JI on Apr 21, 2008 2:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't disagree...

Frank Thomas is definitely an old player skills dude - and would likely be an upgrade to Vidro. I recognize that it isn’t a no-brainer for the M’s to go after Thomas. But he’s still got power - and Safeco wouldn’t hurt him as much in that regard. In other areas, definitely, but the power and OBP numbers (i.e. walks) won’t suffer in Safeco. Those are two things that Thomas likely still has.

I’d strongly consider dumping Vidro in favor of Thomas—even though Vidro technically can bat left-handed (and FT brings a RH bat). Maybe Cairo instead, but Cairo can at least put a glove on correctly. Vidro might bring some more BA, but Thomas will still bring OBP and SLG. Even in Safeco…

And I don’t disagree that it’s not exactly a no-brainer. There are major risks here. I’m not convinced that this lineup needs to get more right handed, although his 1.062 OPS vs. lefties last year might be nice to have around…

Ill Ligitamus Non Carberendum

by PositivePaul on Apr 21, 2008 2:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think it will.

When Richie gets ahold of one it goes a really long way. Frank can do that, too, but a lot of his homers in Toronto have been fairly gentle high flyballs that happen to land beyond the fence in that windless, climate-controlled cavern. Thomas his 26 HR last season, but only 7 of them were hit on the road.

by PositivePaul on Apr 21, 2008 7:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I dunno

Frank would definitely be an upgrade over Turbo, there’s no doubt about that. But he’s not going to transform this team into the best in the West either, and as USSM said, bringing him in at DH pretty much ensures that Raul is never moved out of LF this year. But unfortunately if this team is gonna sign anyone I have a feeling it’ll be Thomas.

If we signed Bonds the West would be ours to lose, but it’s never gonna happen. He can be both a defensive upgrade over Raul and a HUGE and much-needed bat.

by OlSalty on Apr 21, 2008 5:35 PM PDT   0 recs

At least I'm a Thomas fan.

It’d bring a lot of personal excitement back into the games (because it would be someone I want to watch) even if it doesn’t affect much else. Plus, if he’s cheap, maybe he can take over for Sexson at first when we sign Griffey over the offseason to take the DH role. Then my two favorite players in the early 90’s can at least entertain me while the team fails.

...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Apr 21, 2008 6:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Frank Thomas at first base

would redefine “crime against humanity”

by Matthew on Apr 21, 2008 6:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Ibanez can be first. Griffey a death hole in right, and Thomas DH.

Also, I’m not talking about the ideal team. I’m talking about a team with players I like. I am not a Vidro fan. I do not get any enjoyment out of watching him bat.

...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Apr 21, 2008 7:21 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm trying to mix and match.

I’m failing. It doesn’t work if Ibanez is still on the team, but since he will be I can’t figure out where they’d all go to get this scenario to work.

...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Apr 21, 2008 7:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Until they make a team of DH's,

I’ll just have to use those two solely in video games.

by Librocrat on Apr 21, 2008 8:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd rather watch Griffey play defense then watch Turbo bat

because then I could yell at my monitor “24 year old Ken Griffey would have caught that!”
