Big Hurt Available
Toronto cut Frank Thomas today. Had he reached 376 PAs he would have triggered a $10 million option for 2009.
He has bad numbers through 60 ABs .167/.306/.333
Hey, he'd be more useful than Miguel Cairo.

We should pick him up
There’s no reason not to! Toronto will eat his salary; We’ll get a right-handed power bat. If he doesn’t work out, well, we’ve got Richie Sexson.
M, period. Fresh, comma.

eh
If Toronto benched him after only 60 at bats it has to make you wonder if he’s completely washed up.

Sign him!
He’s started really slowly the last two years, and by using both him and Vidro at DH neither one of their options would vest (assuming we’d be taking the rest of the contract…not sure how that works)

It's supid to sign Frank Thomas when you could have Barry Bonds.

Be realistic, though
This FO won’t sign Bonds.
They will sign Thomas.

That being said
If we could release Vidro and sign Thomas, I wouldn’t have a problem. However, off the top of my head, Lofton > Thomas.

Not as a hitter.
If the M’s were gonna sign Lofton they would’ve done it already.

true
But Thomas can’t run, and Safeco is a bitch to hit in. Lofton would probably stay healthier, save a shit ton of runs on defense (Raul--> DH)- though I am incapable of crunching haven’t crunched the numbers yet. Plus, acquiring Kenny Lofton has shown to be a proven avenue to success, he seems to be on every playoff team.
But shit yeah, I’d take him over Vidro.

Definitely pick him up.
Pros:
- His batting eye is still there: 11BB to 13K this year
- He’s been unlucky: .159 BABIP
- Still has good power: .167 IsoP this year
- Cheap: would probably come here without much $$ for the opportunity to play full time
- Good hitter over his career in AL West parks (minus Safeco)
- Can still mash LHP (1.000+ OPS vs LHP last year)
Cons:
- Not very good in Safeco over his career
- Getting old, could be headed down a steep decline in performance
- Could block Clement (maybe not a bad thing)
by saltydog75 on Apr 20, 2008 9:49 AM PDT 0 recs
Why would blocking Clement not be a bad thing?
Regardless, I say sign him. Give Kenji till June 1 to hit, and if he’s not getting it done, flip him for a team in need of a catcher and let Clement take over the catching duty.

He looks better in blue, and our dome perfectly hides him from the spotlight
You have that whole “is it a dome or is it an open air stadium” retractable roof BS going on. We even have a petting zoo.
Therefore us > you in Bonds’ metallic heart.

Dumb as it may seem, I hadn't realized that nobody had signed Lofton yet
I’d take either the Hurt or Lofton. Safeco is bad for Thomas, but I confess to a sentimental attachment to him.
I despise Bonds for the same reason I like Thomas. If the M’s actually signed him (not gonna happen, obviously), I’d just have to hold my nose and hold my tongue.

Speaking of quality players sitting by the phone
Why in the hell is Kenny Lofton still unemployed? It’s not like his bat fell off a cliff or anything.
Think Red would forgive him? I’m sure most of us would.

I think he wanted a starting job
and wasn’t guaranteed one.
That would be my guess because I read that he turned down offers from the Rays and Reds.

I think just about every team
has a AAA OF who is capable of what lofton can do if not more.
But yeah no reason not to pick up Frank. He’s not gonna be great but its better than what we’ve got (if we don’t have Bonds). If you look at his home runs from last year I’m pretty sure almost every single one of them would get out of Safeco Field. From Hit tracker, it says the shortest he hit last year was 370 ft.

Steve Phillips also mentioned the Mariners as his first pick for picking up Frank Thomas. I think it might happen. It’s not as good of a solution as Bonds, but it’s atleast good that Bavasi sees an issue in the current offense.

You know, no matter how much the M's love Vidro
I’m positive they realize that Vidro’s vesting option is stupid, which is probably why they have already been figuring out PC ways to cut down his AB’s. Granted they’ll probably try to resign him anyway when the season is over, just for less than the 9 mil.

Well...
Whether they’re stuck with him and whether they know 9 million is retardiculous for a player of his “caliber,” can be two different things. Like I said, I would not be surprised if they wanted to keep him, resign him, etc. But I would be surprised if they did not realize that nine million is about 6 million more than any other team would pay him at best.
