4/20: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels, Apr 20, 2008 12:35 PM PDT
Barry Lamar Bonds (born July 24, 1964 in Riverside, California) is a Major League Baseball outfielder who is currently a free agent. He is the son of former major league All-Star Bobby Bonds, the godson of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, the nephew of 1964 Olympian Rosie Bonds, and a distant cousin of Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.[1] He debuted in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986 and joined the San Francisco Giants in 1993, where he stayed through 2007. Bonds filed for free agency following the 2007 World Series.[2]
Bonds currently holds the all-time Major League Baseball home run record with 762, and is also the all-time career leader in both walks (2,558) and intentional walks (688). He holds numerous other records, including the single-season Major League record for home runs (73), set in 2001, and a record seven Most Valuable Player awards.
...
On September 21, 2007, the San Francisco Giants confirmed that they would not re-sign Bonds for the 2008 season.[91] The story was first announced on Bonds' own web site earlier that day.[92] There is much speculation about where Bonds might play in 2008 and possibly beyond. Experts have suggested nearly a dozen teams as possible destinations.[93][92]
Bonds stated that he would like to sign with the New York Yankees as a designated hitter, but that since the team currently has two designated hitters on the roster, it would be unlikely they would sign him.[94]
Most talk is of Bonds signing just for the 2008 season as he needs just 65 hits to reach the 3,000 hit mark. There is little discussion of the 800th home run or other milestones as motivation for continuing beyond 2008. In addition to the hits, Bonds needs 20 more runs scored to move past Ty Cobb for second place, and 69 to pass Rickey Henderson to be the all-time runs champion; and 38 extra base hits to move past Hank Aaron as the all-time extra base hits champion. Bonds continues to talk of his quest for a World Series championship as motivation for returning in 2008.[91]
He filed for free agency status on October 29, 2007.[95]

I'm sure we will wait 'til mid season
and we are 10 games back before Bavasi gets desperate and offers Barry a deal.
Actually scratch that
I’m sure we would gut what is left of our farm and get Jr. back before we would ever just sign Bonds.
A grat number of people
seem to be under the delusion that the Reds will take a soon to be 32 year-old free agent catcher for their superstar player.

Jr. is a DH who's going to hit free agency this year
He’s also blocking the best prospect in baseball.

Dunn seems highly tradeable
plus a good candidate for collapse in his next contract. Seems like a no brianer.
Barry Bonds died for your sins.
Weren't they trying to shop him around the deadline last year too?
Maybe the M’s decided he needed 1 more year of veteran-ness before they’d make a move for him.
I suspect they'll both leave in free agency this year anyway
Whereupon we sign Griffey to something like a 2/$14m deal and everyone is happy until we don’t sign Teixeira and we also retain Ibanez at which point I go on a murderous rampage through Seattle.
by Graham MacAree on Apr 20, 2008 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions
My [desperate] hope is that
With Griffey here the Mariners no longer require Raul’s services as TFOTF, and Kind tell him he can be a platoon DH or he can go fuck himself…. and if we blew our wad on Sexson four years ago, why won’t be blow our wad on a vastly superior replacement?
Barry Bonds died for your sins.
It doesn't matter how you perceive his role on that team
If the Reds are contending, they’re not gong to trade him. If the Reds are selling at the deadline, they’re going to want someone like Clement rather than Johjima.
by discovolante on Apr 20, 2008 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions
His value just isn't as high as you think it is
by Graham MacAree on Apr 20, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions
NB: Trading for him would be dumb though
He comes free at the end of the year.
by Graham MacAree on Apr 20, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think his value is very high, but I know that Johjima isn't gonna meet that price.
by discovolante on Apr 20, 2008 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't see any reason why he wouldn't
Johjima is a big upgrade over Ross and Bruce isn’t a downgrade from Griffey.
by Graham MacAree on Apr 20, 2008 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Plus, Cincy knows Griffey is gone
and he’s not loved there as he is loved here.
Come to think of it, no one ever for any reason in all of history, is a loved as Griffey is loved in Seattle.
Barry Bonds died for your sins.
If they're selling at the deadline, they'll take whatever they can get
Because if they’re out of contention they’re going to get nothing for Griffey when he becomes a free agent. That gives opposing teams a ton of leverage in negotiations with them, certainly enough to not give up a good prospect for him.
Hiring Dusty Baker to manage a team
with under performing veterans who are blocking bright young players = smart(!)

The Reds would have to pay 4M to decline the option and then offering Griff arb would guarantee him 10M were he to accept.
Doesn't he want out pretty much for sure though?

The letter I wrote Mr. Bonds from his website.
Dear Mr. Barry Bonds,
Us Mariners fans in Seattle need you! We desperately need that left-handed power bat you possess! Our home field is perfectly designed for lefties with power, and Seattle gets little to no national media exposure being in the obscure northwest part of the country. Our offense has very little power, and even less left-handed power. We need you Barry, me and my fellow bloggers all want you on our team, and everytime the team loses this year from a lack of offense (almost 20 games in and already have been quite a lot of games like that) we all mention that Bonds can be in the lineup. Please consider Seattle, Mr. Bonds! Also, congratulations on all your past success, and I hope you could possibly have further success here in Seattle. Thank you for the consideration.
Correct.
What you really need to do is steal Howard Lincoln’s cat and hold it hostage. You will only release it after Barry Bonds is signed to a one-year contract. If Lincoln fails to comply, you will throw the cat into a woodchipper.
Who are you kidding?
You throw it into the woodchipper either way…can’t have any witnesses

Anyone headed to the game?
I’m about to head out. I’ll be sitting in section 108 wearing the 1977 eras light blue M’s hat and a dark blue Lookout Landing Tshirt.
I might have on a black USC zipper hoodie depending upon how cold it is as well.
If you’re in the area, stop by and say hi!
The poster formerly known as Matt.
It has been my experience at their ballpark
that their fans are almost irritatingly polite to me. I mean I’m not a jackass or anything but even friendly natured trash talk is usually met with this vapid, plastic surgery deformed, emotionless face. Except the one time I was in the second row behind home plate. Those fans were pretty cool. They were pissed that I got Orlando Cabrera’s girlfriend’s tickets off of ticketmaster though. (Or so they claimed that was who’s tickets they belonged to)
If there's one thing I learned from Spring Training this year
it’s that the Angels players have no friends.

According to the Cardinals broadcast
the Cardinals are winning because Rolen and Edmonds are gone and the chemistry(!) has taken over(!!!)...
...but wait? I thought the Jim Edmonds was the firey veteran leader who gave Ron Belliard the game ball, united the team, and sparked them on to a WS victory…. aaaaah my brain hurts.
Barry Bonds died for your sins.
s/game/season
OK, I still get pumped for Felix Day, but at this point, the Mariners are exactly the team I thought they’d be- .500, inconsistent on offense plus bad on defense, thus making the OMG AWESUM!!! pitching vaguely disappointing.
I mean, yeah, Bavasi’s likely toast if they end up 80-82 after blowing the farm system on Bedard, but how excited can you be that the most likely positive outcome for your team is getting the GM fired? The whole season feels like a performance of Waiting for Godot so far.
by eponymous_coward on Apr 20, 2008 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions
You're right
Plus if Bavasi is fired, I wonder what other clown Lincoln and Armstrong would bring in. I think that the team would need new ownership if anything was to change in management.
I would find that so amusing
I’m not sure how long it’d be funny, but he’d probably be fired before his hiring would stop being hilarious

by eponymous_coward on Apr 20, 2008 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions
OK, maybe the 2008 AL West = 1973 NL East
And we’ll win it with 82 wins.
Does that change the quality of the team we’re watching?
by eponymous_coward on Apr 20, 2008 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Go look at how many times teams win divisions with 85 or less wins.
You’re rooting for Red 23 to come up on the rouiette table. Nothing wrong with that, just keep it in mind.
I’d kind of like to see a team that isn’t badly flawed one of these years for $110 million.
by eponymous_coward on Apr 20, 2008 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions
So how do you know how many wins the M's will be good for?
A number of models projected them UNDER .500. So far, they are .500-ish.
Realistically, 90+ wins is the threshold for being a playoff contender. I’m not seeing it yet.
Maybe I’ll be wrong. God knows it would be fun to be. I don’t recall anyone thinking the 2003 Marlins were going to have hardware.

Short, compact, and fast.
I was thinking more
pussy double… that was the slowest rolling double.. damn fine placement though.

Yes, it's still early but
if we win today, we’ll probably be about even with the Angels again after the next series since we play Baltimore with Felix and Silva going. The Angels face Beckett and Matsusaka I believe. So, that’s something.
Yes I know Baltimore swept us, but it’s still just Baltimore, and they still scare nobody…. unless they have the lead in the 9th.
I'm looking forward
to Clement arriving.
