Free Talent - Dan Johnson
Your typical Quad.5-A player, Dan Johnson (bbref)has just been designated for assignment by the A's. Call him Ben Broussard w/o the guitar. Must pass through waivers to be assigned to minors.
[rosterbation]...better than Richie Sexson...release Cairo...Johnson/Sexson platoon = what should've happened last year...no way Bavasi does this so why bother...probably ends up on Giants...[/rosterbation]
Choice quote about Johnson's roster replacement:
Ask anyone in Oakland's clubhouse about the 24-year-old Smith, and they all rave about his high baseball IQ.
Rookie Dana Eveland, Smith's teammate at Triple-A Tucson last season, calls the Louisiana native "a genius" and a classic lefty who is "very crafty."
"He's the guy you look at and wonder how he gets guys out," Eveland said. "He puts a lot of effort into looking at the hitters and seeing who can do what, what to throw to whoever."
I'm sorry, but 24 is too young to be "crafty".

Why is Cairo Still on the Roster?
Is he there to scare Jose into being good? Does looking towards the bench and seeing Miguel scratching himself nonchalantly evoke fears in Jose of what he might become if he doesn't bust his ass?

Seriously?
If Cairo's presence is making Lopez non-suck, I'm all for it because Squinty ain't gonna use that bench either way.

Sign him to a MiLB contract
He's mashed in AAA, and is better 1B depth than LaHair.
He's odd in that some years he has LaHair-esque platoon splits, and other years they disappear.
Huh. I guess there's room given that the team released Kevin Witt, who I at least was pretty excited to see. Johnson'd be a good consolation prize.
Greg Smith ain't bad.

If you do not claim him on waivers,
and he passes through, the A's can just send him down to the minors.
He does not have enough service time to reject the assignment.
So, if you want him, you need to claim him and pay him the major league minimum, not an MiLB contract.

Does he have an option year left
or is the reason they're doing this that he's out of options?
I wouldn't mind the league minimum part, but there's no way this org uses a roster spot on him. Hey, Miguel Cairo's another coach on that bench!
