3/30: Stateside Opening Day Open Thread
Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals, Mar 30, 2008 5:05 PM PDT
Here's a fun game I was playing with someone last Friday. Without
cheating, name as many current Washington Nationals pitchers as you
can.
Teixeira '09.

Thank goodness for fantasy baseball.
Lannan
Bergmann
Hill (albeit injured)
Loaiza
Those are my best guesses.
If you're a fantasy player, and you look at the Nationals' pitching staff
you're a bad fantasy player.
by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 30, 2008 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions
I look at it.
I don't own any of them....
well, I picked up Hill a week ago to keep as a DL spot. He is good enough he might produce when healthy.
Oh, plus you need to know everyone's closers.
And when you are in deep leagues, I am in a couple, you have to find value somewhere.
Ryan Zimmerman
Cristian Guzman
Dmitri Young
Nick Johnson
.....uhhhhhhh...fuck it all.... Ronnie Belliard? Is he still on the team?
Previously NoNameX -- Go M's!
Hmmm
Can anyone explain why I'm seeing this whenever I try to access mlbtv?

It even does that when I try to get into gameday audio.
It did this for the second Japan game too
The first was fine.
If I'm having trouble with watching on opening day...
by Graham MacAree on Mar 30, 2008 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions
That's been happening to me too
Usually only when watching games live. I have no idea why. It doesn't seem to be a blackout thing. I sent them an email but they never replied. Just another in a long series of retarded mlb.com bugs I think.
Yeah, I can watch archived games fine
by Graham MacAree on Mar 30, 2008 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, trygoing to
MLB.com, go to 'Audio and Video' and click on Multimedia guide, then click on the live broadcast for the game. When I do that the log in screen comes up just fine. Unfortunately the national blackout keeps me from seeing what happens past that point, but it should work.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Nope, same picture
I can log in fine. Just can't get into any of the feeds.
by Graham MacAree on Mar 30, 2008 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Crap. Then contacting MLB.com
is probably the best option, which I see you've already done.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
I suspect that paying £5 to upgrade is my best best
However, since I don't have the credit card in question I have to hunt someone down to get it done. Grrrrr.
by Graham MacAree on Mar 30, 2008 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Try another browser
I had it with Firefox but they gave me the login screen with IE. I guess it is some kind of cookie problem, had it several times last year too.
If you ever get that again...
try going to the "My Account" link on the main page. It will tell you that your session has expired and you need to log in again. It's worked for me a couple times.
Starting pitchers...
Bergmann
Hill
...Patterson doesn't count since he got cut...
Okay, I give.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Oh, just pitchers in general?
Okay, add Cordero. And I'm out of names again.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!

This was kinda disappointing though. I'm going to watch a lot of games out of my bed and this will probably put me asleep most of the time :(

When it's a certain manager in the AL west doing it...
So it looks like the name of the game here
is never leaving the gamethread. I haven't noticed any significant lag from within, but I just refreshed to see how many comments there were and it took over 30 seconds.
yeah
refreshing = bad
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
That's both incredibly interesting and useful, thank you.
...and now I'm here
I have been having some problems with "z"
Otherwise I'd say you're right.
...and now I'm here
I have too.
If you have a comment "highlighted", and a comment appears over it, it'll clear that comment and go to the next one. If you keep comments cleared, or use c + x, it works better.
That's been a problem for a while.
In this case, my thing has been deselecting all comments altogether.
So if I press z, no matter how many times I press it, it doesn't work unless I click on the screen again.
...and now I'm here
Thats been happening to me,
but only when I switch to a different window or tab and then come back...
Fucking flesh eating ponies.
...and now I'm here
Maybe its cause i have the flu and im bitter...
but I just know im gonna hate those commercials where the players are talking to those little league kids.
"fuck! one of my homers turned out to be a triple and an error! this is literally the worst thing to ever happen!"
"dont worry kid, youve got me, a famous big leaguer to help you out and give you self confidence!"
"yay! what a positive little league experience!"
as you can probably tell, i didnt get many hits in little league. i vaguely remember making contact once, but that was probably a boredom-induced hallucination from sitting on the bench for years
And for a minute there I lost myself.
I lost myself.
...and now I'm here
Hey, something interesting.
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
No matter what park they play in, they're still the
Nationals.
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
Is this the first official use of the surprised face
this season?

I'd search the Sox/A's game threads
but I don't want to wait out the loading times.

Nationals fans hate America.
...and now I'm here
Fair @ reply.
I blame the indent on the comment box. I thought I hit reply.
What do you blame for misspelling fail?
...and now I'm here
Firefox.
It doesn't have spellcheck by default in the title boxes.
True... though "fair" is still a word.
I blame Russians.
...and now I'm here
Yeah dude, I hate that
Spellcheck is my best friend, an I need it in the subject just as much, if not more...
yay!

i love it when opening day gets interesting. it just seems right.

I'm not watching extra innings.
Somebody go deep.
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
Well the bright side for you guys is
if the Braves get a lead, you'll get to see Soriano again.

Nice job Eric Byrnes.
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
GONE!!!
ZIMMERMAN!
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
Happy ending...
I can't hear that phrase without having the Robot Chicken sketch get stuck in my head.
Hot damn that was perfect.
Baseball is back! I can't wait for tomorrow.
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
Heard at the plate
Zimmerman: AHHHHHHHH!
Teammates: WHOOOOOOOO!
Manny Acta: Anyone have the win expectancy chart for this game?
Previously NoNameX -- Go M's!
Well
what a nice park. I was in DC a few years ago and went to a Nats game at RFK. Not only was it a POS, but I was wearing my Ducks cap and some guy started shouting outside the Metro about Oregonians being racist and he wanted to fight me.
I hauled ass to the stadium as fast as I could.
Anyway, this stadium looked nice and a refreshing difference from the 'retro' craze.
Oh, and that game I went to a few years back, Zimmerman hit a walk off against Wang. I've liked him ever since.

Well, it looks like the new Lookout Landing failed.
Apologies to everyone for the sucky features. We'll be rolling you all back to the previous platform as soon as we can.
Sorry for the terrible inconvenience!

Yeah, smugness bothers me.
Just had to try it once. It's out of my system now.

You clearly have never been here on Felix day.
...and now I'm here
what's Felix day?
clearly i haven't

Wait until we reach the 1000 comment limit.
Wait... is there a 1000 comment limit?
...and now I'm here
Yeah well so's your face
This whole thing worked like a charm once you were already in the thread. So the slow loading time looks like it'll only be a one-time problem (if you're late).
The new auto-refresh comment notice does give MLB.tv a little hiccup every 20 seconds, but it's not horrible. Just a heads-up.
by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 30, 2008 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions
We're making some more tweaks
in prep for all the Opening Day games tomorrow, so we're hoping it'll be even faster. And if we've figured right it ought to solve the MLB.tv hiccup.
Really, it's great to see that y'all were able to enjoy yourselves and keep communicating throughout the game without much trouble.

For the record
this thread currently has a 14-second complete loading time for me. That's not too bad, and if you're in the thread from the start, you don't even have to deal with it at all. If you can fix that little glitch with MLB.tv, then that's just gravy.
The site performance over the last few days has really assuaged my initial fears. Good on you guys. I'm more than pleased.

We need to do better than that
FireFox 2 is unusually slow at this sort of thing for some reason, so we've taken it up as a challenge. Safari manages to load this page in roughly 9 seconds for me.
FF3beta is even faster (so the future looks bright) but we're determined to make things quicker in FF2, IE6, IE7 and Opera.

I will not stand in your way
I suppose if you must improve on things...
by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 30, 2008 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions
My only real complaint at this point is the fact that comments stop threading at a certain point.
It would be awesome if this were fixed before the game.
But besides that, I gotta agree with Jeff, it's handling things much better than expected so far.
Also, I just noticed that you guys have added a post button, allowing us to skip the preview. Awesome! You guys rock.
If Pinocchio has a cocaine problem and he lies about it, does that make it worse?
Admit it
How many of these great recent changes were only made because of us. All of them? I thought so.
...and now I'm here
You know it's true.
Everything we do, we do for you.
