When the lineup wraps around 8-9-1-2
The average pitches taken per PA for those 4 in 2007 was 13.9 total. That's under 3.5 per.
This team needs Bonds in the worst possible way.
The player you want would help the team less than the player I want.

It scares me
That this includes Ichiro, too. I know he's not a pitch taking machine, but it's hard to think of him in the same company as those other 3 when it comes to much of anything regarding approach.

Gives Sexson slightly better pitches.
Though probably not by much.

Huh.
I believe you, since I haven't read anything about it. Though I see the logic to the other side as well, since it would make sense to pitch differently when a better player is after them, even if the difference is minimal.
...and now I'm here
I know I might be in the minority...
But I'm really glad Lopez is in the 2 hole. It's the place he's had success. His one All-Star appearance came from the 2 hole and then he got moved to the 3 spot after the break and immediately feel apart. I know it's silly, but maybe it's just a comfort thing.
Silver lining: The more ABs he gets in the 2 hole, the more likely it is Vidro doesn't get his option
As it forces Vidro to bat lower in the order.

minority or not
I'm right there with you. It's irrational, but I'm clinging to blind hope that he repeats early 2006 in the 2 hole again. I pray that him bunting too often is the biggest complaint I have.

I'd've assumed that you're family members are addicted to pain killers, but they're most likely too poor to sustain such an addiction.

According to baseball musing's
lineup tool, using the 2004 model and last years totals this lineup would score 4.832 runs per game.
The best possible lineup with these players according to the tool would score 4.95 runs per game.
The poster formerly known as Matt.
How much of a difference does it make
that the projection systems tend to dislike Ichiro?
...and now I'm here
no clue. 20, 30 runs max I would assume.
I get it somewhat, I'm pretty down on our offense too, but we did score, and deserved to score, 780+ runs last year, so to get to ~700, we'd need:
-Johjima to collapse
-No improvement from Richie, Lopez, Yuni or Beltre
-Ibanez to fall apart
-Ichiro to fall back
-Wilkerson to suck
Could that happen? Sure. But I have no idea why that's the consensus instead of the worst-case scenario.
Guessing:
Projections have drop offs for age, most of our players are old, our young players are not known for their running scoring abilities.
Projections hate Ichiro (add 20 runs, ~720), Projections rightfully so hate Vidro (If he actually manages to pull what he did last year, add 15+), Guillen to Wilkerson is probably 10 or so runs, and all old players probably get an immediate -5 by the projection systems, simply for being old.
That's just my guess though. Thoughts?
...and now I'm here
Guillen to Wilkerson, 10 runs....
you mean minus 10, right?
Guillen last year in Safeco (Pitchers Park): .290/.353/.460/.813
Wilkerson last year in Texas (Hitters Park): .234/.319/.467/.786

In this case, we're only talking about estimated runs scored in projections.
So defense is not relevant.
...and now I'm here
Yeah.
I'm trying to explain the difference in projections. We scored 780 last year, but the team is essentially the same, and we're projected for 700.
780 -
20 (Ichiro not being liked by projection systems)
10 (Guillen to Wilkerson in projections)
10 (Vidro's natural loss since it is unlikely his season repeats)
30 (Vidro, Ibanez , Sexson, Johjima, Ichiro natural age drop offs in projections - Ibanez gets 10 since he's a corpse.
5 (Betancourt's likely lack of clutchiness)
5 (Bench sucks)
=700
...and now I'm here
bleh
i know this lineup is no surprise, but it just looks so underwhelming. Wilkerson is a terrible "upgrade" over Guillen in my uninformed opinion, mildly improved defense or no. the flailing train wreck that is Sexson. Lopez.... well, fucking Lopez. Yuni seems to either kick ass or disappear for a month. McLaren's old hag game "management", and his bench of misfits...
could see a lot of 4-2 losses out of this lineup. hope i'm wrong.
by lemonverbena on Mar 30, 2008 1:06 AM PDT up reply actions
i keep trying and trying and trying
but theres just not very much interesting about this lineup. It's unfortunate, as this is supposed to be "the year", but I'm pretty meh about them all (with a few exceptions). Hope they grow on me.
Wow, that's a crappy line-up
New Mariner fan here- as a former New Yorker let me say sorry for having to experience the horror that is Miguel Cairo. It seems McLaren and Joe Torre went to the same school of loving "veteran" players who are scrappy. I know we're stuck with Sexson and his 15 million per year, but was it that difficult this offseason to put Ibanez in at DH and find two outfielders who were marginally good defensively and replacement level hitters? I could never understand why my Mariner friends hated Bavasi but seeing things up close and personal now I understand. I'm not verysmart, but it seems to me that if pitching is the strength of your team you ought to at least have someone who can get to a ball in the outfield. And your benchwould only suck more if you had Andy Phillips on it.
Welcome to LL.

That would be when...
but I look forward to ridicule and humiliation. New to the area and I have two questions. The first, I would imagine, has been asked by many- Why is Bill Bavasi still employed by this organization?
The second question arose during my first Mariner game last year- What's up with the Nazi-like stadium decorum? No swearing, "public displays of affection" (which I would guess to mean no head in the 300 levels), everyone sits until the big scoreboard orders them to stand and cheer and then, once the board goes dark, people sit again. No place to smoke in the stadium except in a box outside in the rain and if your foot is outside of the box staff yell at you. No "offensive t-shirts" or signs. Can there be a more regulated environment to watch a game?
I do like the extensive beer selection though.
Bavasi>McLaren
Also, his replacement isn't likely to be much better, given who's doing the hiring.
Seattle is PC. Also, many M's fans are casual and/or mildly retarded. And no one will kick you out for swearing unless you swear in front of easily offended mother/children or are drunk or both.

Promotional ideas
Well I have submitted numerous promotional ideas to management to liven up the games:
1) MILF Day: MILF's get in free and get free beer.
2) D- Cell Day: Instead of bobbleheads, fans get free batteries and get to throw them at players/management.
3) No sandals/No Socks Day: No fans wearing that combination are allowed entry- what's up with that? Seattleittes LOVE the socks and sandals! It is like New Yorkers and their wife beaters.
4) Hetero Day: Only straights allowed but it should be held during a Seattle Storm home game so GLBTrans community has entertainment options.
I like the battery idea
Sounds like a good way to "energize" this offense
