Friday's not looking so good for me anymore
I have to squeeze a lot of things in...it's still possible, but not as likely.  Car work in the morning and a musician friend's concert at night.  It would depend on how long the car stuff took.  so Saturday or Sunday are defintely better.

April 12 or 26th ??
Both are Saturday 6:10pm home games (first against ANA, second OAK).

We could start playing around noon, figure two games last until 3-4, go to a bar and grab drinks and then head to the stadium.

or

nix going to the game, push the start time back to ~2, and then just watch the game in a bar.

If it ends up being the 12th
there's an outside chance I can be there; I'm pretty sure I'm heading up for the M's game that night.  If I'm there, I can probably rope my friend Todd into showing up as well.

People get hurt playing baseball
especially people that don't know what they're doing.  We got a real range of experience out there... so, to avoid injuries, it's best we play softball or whiffleball.

Granted, we did have one softball injury, but that was because Graham's friend tried to spike him while sliding into 3rd.

by johnbai on Mar 5, 2008 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

Baseball fan does not equal
Baseball Player.

I hate softball with a passion.  My knees will not allow football.  However, if you were to play real baseball, or stickball even, I would be in and I could bring a few players with me.

by Sec 108 on Mar 5, 2008 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

I know that fan != player
but I figure if you're organizing a game, you're already selecting for the more athletically-inclined.

When I make it up, I will insist on a baseball game. I'm a pitcher, so I'm not doing any softball.

but I can't hit.

by Jeff Interpreter on Mar 5, 2008 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

I can throw fast and hit the ball hard. And I still can't hit or pitch.

Not that hard
haven't pitched competitively since high school, when I topped out at 80 on a windy day.

by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 5, 2008 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

I was up to the 70's.
Didn't play in High School. I clocked myself last year at the Safeco speed pitch though and I couldn't beat 63.
...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Mar 5, 2008 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

So is my talent :(.
0 practice definitely slows you down. I used to be able to run quickly too. Ha. No.
...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Mar 6, 2008 10:04 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, but you're totally right.
One time it was pointed at the fence. Guy went up there and through a wicked fastball, and it clocked him at 19. I can kick the ball faster than 19.
...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Mar 6, 2008 10:05 AM PST up reply actions

See, that's you're just better than most of us
I too am a lefty with a few pitches in my arsenal (knuckle-curve, circle change, 4-seam, 2-seam, experimenting with knuckler and gyro) but I top out around 55, and I can't hit anything faster than 50.

Now if we were just going half effort only throwing in the 30's range or so I'd be good.  I'd actually like that better, makes fielding easier too.  Plus, you can still mix people up with different pitches, they'd just all be slower.  Also, if you have a gyroball, please throw it to me, I golfed Graham's off the dirt and out of the park last year before the LL softball game.

Of course, this all doesn't matter unless you come up and play this summer.  So get your ass up here and play, you fucker. >:(

Yesterday's Pants

by BrettJMiller on Mar 5, 2008 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

I have one pitch.
It's a fastball. And by fastball I mean it's a ball that goes at a speed that is faster than any other speed I can hit without actually being considered fast.

The only time I played baseball was in 7th grade when I played "the outfield" - and by that I mean they put everyone else in infield and put me in the outfield because I was the only person who could catch or throw the ball to home plate. That was actually a lot of fun.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Mar 5, 2008 10:05 PM PST up reply actions

I'm still amazed
I don't think you hit any of my two seam fastballs out of the infield but you were consistently hammering gyros that dropped from your knees to barely above that plate. That made me sad.

by Graham MacAree on Mar 6, 2008 1:03 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I'm in if there is ever a real
Baseball game.  I'd be honored to drag bunt your Jamie Moyer repertoire.

by Sec 108 on Mar 6, 2008 6:25 AM PST up reply actions

I'm okay with soft pitching
if that's how we want to play. But softball injury has about the same likelihood as baseball injury, not including on pitches.

I assume you guys don't limit runs scored in an inning, right?

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Mar 5, 2008 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

small hard object coming at you VERY fast
whether you're fielding or hitting or whatever...

vs. big (slightly softer) object coming at you much slower.

No contest, but y'all have fun playing baseball!

Be outfield.
You'll have plenty of time to duck if you need to.

Baseball is not dangerous
if you pay attention that is.

Infield is fun to play when baseball is substituted for softball.

There's currently a 4 to 3 favor for Sunday.  I don't want to swing things either way because I don't have a preference between Saturday or Sunday.

I'll bring my glove just in case anyone else is interested.

Why don't we just play longer?
And as for baseball... I seriously doubt there will be enough open space at the park to hit baseballs. We've had to scrape for enough space to make a reasonable football field lately.

On April 10, 2003, the entire area was designated Cal Anderson Park after Washington's first openly gay state legislator. Anderson had died in 1995 of AIDS.

Confirmed: my nose is NOT broken
It's not even swollen or bruised.

Discuss.

Oh, and the game too, which was pretty awesome on what will probably be our new field for the foreseeable future: Seattle U's soccer field on 14th/Cherry.

Randomite T.C. was an excellent tag-along and provided a strong foil for Matthew's Tecmo-Bowl-like speed and skill.  Brett ran for and caught a bunch of touchdowns, and Katal had some deceptive speed, leaving me in the dust on a couple pass plays where I thought I had him stopped.  And John caught and threw as many great deep TD passes as he dropped and overthrew... and his postgame meal suggestion, the Lemongrass, was an excellent choice.

And I caught a TD bomb with the assistance of my face, but that's neither here nor there ;P

by Gomez on Mar 9, 2008 10:19 PM PDT reply actions

Hmm
So that's what the ambulance I saw on my walk back was for.

by Mariner John on Mar 10, 2008 12:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Gomez's face catch was amazing
It rivals Robert's Butt Catch for highlight of the season.

First of all, Gomez doesn't usually run the streak routes, but we decided to send him deep on that play.  He got a step of separation with Katal and I saw my chance to get Gomez a deep bomb and a chance to go up 5-4.

The pass was a little lower and harder than I intended, instead of big lob.  The ball zipped right over Gomez's shoulder, catching his glasses and hitting him smack in the nose.

But with incredible skill and concentration, he secured the ball after a quick bobble and scampered in for the touchdown.  I saw his glasses go flying, so I knew it wasn't a "textbook" catch... but I didn't realize I'd bloodied both his nostrils in the process.

Bill helped get Gomez cleaned up and find some tissue to stuff in his nose.  I'm sure we'll be posting a picture of that for Lookout Landing Lore soon.

Since we needed to repick teams at that point, Gomez's catch scores points for: Gomez's 1st deep bomb caught over the shoulder on the run; making the play despite personal injury (not just securing the ricochet off his nose, but having the presence of mind to run the final 15 yards into the endzone); and scoring that game's winning touchdown.
