People who think Dane Cook is funny
have parents who thought Gallagher was funny.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
what does it mean if....
My parents through Emo Phillips was funny?
by tendervittles on Mar 29, 2008 2:07 AM PDT up reply actions
It means that they and I had something in common
because Emo Phillips was funny, if only briefly. He's not so funny now, but he did an HBO special about, uh, 15? years ago that was hysterical.

Everyone else I find irritating or unfunny.

Forgive me. I was either drunk on the Seahawks hype
Or drowning my Seahawks sorrows with many drinks.

I don't mind doing it again
Especially since I can't find the old one.

Gallagher
Oh, wait, you said comedian.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Old school
Steve Martin and Bill Cosby. It doesn't get a whole lot funnier than Bill Cosby's old stand up stuff. And Steve Martin should be in some sort of standup Hall Of Fame.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I have "Bill Cosby is a Very Funny Fellow, Right!"
I like it but haven't heard enough of his other stuff to judge. I've only heard clips of Steve Martin's stuff. Not bad.

Get "A Wild And Crazy Guy"
which is probably my favorite Steve Martin record, followed closely by "Let's Get Small".
"Why Is There Air?" is a great Cosby record, too, as is "Revenge"
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Bill Cosby "Himself" has to be about the best stand-up I've ever seen.
Prospects are under-valued.
I didn't list it
because it's in my personal pantheon - I always recommend it to people so I don't want to sound like that's the only thing of his I like. It's absolutely genius.
It's amazing to me, with my predilection for and appreciation of creative profanity, that my favorite standups almost never swear. Except Richard Pryor.

My favorite Cosby Routine.
Got it by mistake looking for other Comedians on Limewire once.

Cosby does seem underappreciated.
He had some hilarious bits, and his own part on his show is still funny, no matter how sickeningly PC it is.
...and now I'm here
I can't really watch it
because it makes me weep for what he was. And the fact that he's recording a rap song right now is just all kinds of wrong.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
In no particular order...
David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Demetri Martin, Mitch Hedberg, Richard Pryor, Sarah Silverman, Maria Bamford, Brian Posehn, Bill Hicks, Jim Gaffigan, Zach Galifinakis. When Dave Chappelle is on, he's as good as it gets, but some of his bits are really, really unfunny.
Locally, all the People's Republic of Komedy guys are pretty good. I like Daniel Carroll in particular, but he's...not for everyone. The Entertainment Show at the Sunset is also a lot of fun.

How did I forget Chappelle and Cross? They definitely round out the top 10 with Chappelle passing Posehn

I saw David Cross once.
His ability to improvise and play off the audience is just incredible. And "Squagles!" is fucking genius.

George Lopez has a good special out called
"Why you crying", and Mitch Fatel has some good stuff out as well.
Prospects are under-valued.
I didn't like that.

"Why you crying" cracked me up. I guess it reminded me of my life growng up.
Prospects are under-valued.
Not Jim Gaffigan.
I'm terrible at these lists because I fail at remembering names, but here's some of mine (in no particular order):
- Demetri Martin
- Greg Geraldo
- Steve Byrne
- Lisa Lampanelli (only on things like "The roasts" where she has a short skit).
- Jeff Dunham, sometimes
- Daniel Tosh
- Mitch Hedberg (I lied, I do remember who he is now, he's hilarious)
- Dave Chappelle
- Tom Papa, occasionally
- Louis Ramey
- KT Tatara
- Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog
Also, side note: The only person as bad as Gaffigan is Christopher Titus.
...and now I'm here
What's your Gaffingan beef?
Even so, I think we get it, you don't have to keep repeating it.

I have no problem with that.
I'm not married to them on that list.
...and now I'm here
I approve of
Triumph and Lisa Lampanelli's inclusion.
And glad someone above mentioned Richard Pryor.
As for clean acts, I loved Bob Newhart, Steven Wright and Andy Kauffman as a child.
This thread needs embedded videos!!!! :-(
Then it would be as cool as this post.
Favorite???
I can see how someone could like his stuff... its alright... kind of... but to be someone's favorite? I don't understand how thats possible
i think tosh is somehwat overrated
other than that i cant think of anyone else to add or remove from that list (although i do think zack galifianakis is pretty funny)
And now I see that the list at the bottom is not the dislike list
so the Galifianakis comment is irrelevant
I'll take
Eddie Izzard a hair over Louis CK (even though Circle was mediocre and I don't know what the hell he's doing trying to act). I have tickets to see him on tour this summer, so I'll see first hand if he's fallen off for good. Louis is fucking brilliant, though – I've watched everything he's ever done and saw him live about a year ago. Much further down the list, I'll take Eddie Murphy, then everybody else.
George Carlin
By far, is my favorite
his new special, It's bad for ya, was amazing

A story
A friend of a friend, for reasons still unknown, was asked to emcee a stand-up show in the cocktail lounge under the Ramada Inn in Hollywood, which is exactly as Lynchian a place as it sounds. This guy shows up in nothing but tighty whiteys and Indian war paint, along with two friends who are tripping balls on mescaline and are dressed in homemade full body felt monster costumes. The guest emcees set up lawn chairs and a tent on stage, along with a portable electric griddle off of which they served toad-in-the-holes during the stand-up acts. The comedians were universally cringe-worthy, though, to be fair, notably distracted. I only mention this because Brian Posehn was the last act to go, and he started to make a half-hearted attempt at his routine before muttering "Fuck this shit, I need to have a long talk with my agent" and walking off the stage.
Mitch Hedberg. Period.
David Cross's Shut Up You Stupid Fucking Baby = classic, as well.
I bought a Woody Allen stand up cd some months ago. I only laughed maybe once, but I was amazed at how many jokes and routines he did that I had heard in movies or television before but hadn't realize were originally his. That was impressive.
Aside: Last summer I was on a car trip to Spokane with a few girls. We were talking about stand up comedians, and while we were listing comedians that we liked (Hedberg, Demetri Martin, Nick Swardson, etc), this one girl piped in with "Have you ever heard Jerry Seinfield before? I like him. And Chris Rock." We didn't get along at all for the rest of the trip.
The artist formerly known as Katal
Chris Rock. Eddie Izzard.
But I also haven't been exposed to a lot of these comedians you're into, so I need to check out their stuff and see what the hype's about.
This list is good
but I like Patton Oswalt over all of these guys.
Go get a copy of 'Feelin' Kinda' Patton' and enjoy!
Hmm now
1. D-Tosh
2. D-Cross
3. Demetri Martin
4. Hedberg
After those four, everyone's interchangable
4. Megan Mooney-only funny comedienne
5. Nick Swardson's pretty good
6.Chris Rock is good I suppose
7. Louis C.K.-I've only seen one of his routines but it was funny.
Hated
1. Cook-obvious
2. Ellen DeGeneres-Immature comedy
3. Jeff Dunham
4. Stephen Lynch-Gimmicky comedy
5. Most Fat Comics (Oh Really? You're fat? I didn't notice.)
6. Comics who try to get by on goofy expressions alone.
7. Dane Cook
by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Mar 28, 2008 6:54 PM PDT reply actions
My list, in no real order
David Cross
Mitch Hedberg
Dave Chappelle
Louis C.K. (though I have not heard very much. But I've listened to Dane Cook, so I probably have heard a lot of Louis C.K.'s stuff.)
Nick Swardson
Demetri Martin
Dave Attell
The Stella guys
And Greg Geraldo is underrated, in my mind.
I'm a bit young (or maybe just closed-minded) to get into a lot of the older stuff -- the George Carlins and the Steve Martins.
The ones I don't like:
Ralphie May (the worst of all time, ever.)
Sarah Silverman (she has moments of greatness, but overall I find her obnoxious and just not funny)
Eddie Murphy
Robin Williams
Bill Hicks

P.S.: That's not safe for work.
P.P.S.: How the fuck can anyone embed videos nowadays?

I agree with your list
although I haven't heard Cross, Gilifanaikas or Posehn's standup.

Brian Regan anyone?
Brian Regan - Extra points for staying clean
Lewis Black
Kevin james (King Of Queens guy - his CC special is good)
Eddie Murphy - 'Raw' is a classic
Eddie Izzard - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv5iEK-IEzw
UK/Irish readers might like Peter Kay (The Hob-Nob's drunk me brew!)
Kathleen Madigan
Good call on Kathleen Madigan.
