an extra note
Dear LL,
I know that some of y'all were apprehensive about this move of your community to a new, confangled blogging and commenting platform. For the last year, as our team worked to design and build what we call SB Nation 2.0, I read all the blogs in our network. In fact, that's almost the only internet reading I did, including a lot of diaries. And awhile back I noticed a thread one of you started up to discuss this big change coming. So I jumped in to answer questions, explain how we approached this and to listen closely to your feedback. A few of you had some great, constructive input. I hope that we can continue those type of conversations about how we've updated things around here.
We've migrated 12 blogs to the new platform now and since every community in SB Nation is a unique place, with a different set of characters that create a particular culture of memes (and dead ones) so we know we're going to get new bugs, new feature requests and a new perspective on the changes we've made to the home of your community. And I know that's what y'all plan to give us. That's fine - we'll take everything you send our way.
Typically, I just post a big summary of everything that's new and everything that has changed. And I did that again. You'll find that post down below. But, before you get started with everything, I want to unveil two new changes we completed in the last couple of days, based the feedback we received from you here at LL and some of our other SB Nation blogs:
- Avatars are optional. I know y'all had planned a big revolution where everyone would show their solidarity by opting out of an avatar. Well, consider this new feature the ultimate black armband. Now you can go to Edit Settings and flip 'Display member avatars / profile images?' to 'No'.
- Wide layout option. Inspired (somewhat) by the Microsoft Paint artwork you posted in the threads that cried out for us to stop wasting space, we decided to provide a layout option with a wider version of the main content area. Now, in the menu box, you can click the two links/icons to flip back and forth between the wide and narrow options. I'm sure many of you will want to utilize the wide version that is optimized for large monitors and higher resolutions
This platform is still in beta and we continue to evolve it based on what we hear from each new blog community we transition. We're listening. And here's the deal: if you take the time to provide us good, constructive feedback, we'll work hard to integrate that into the changes we make going forward.
We know you were comfortable with where the LL community lived before and we know we've moved you into a brand new home where everything is arranged differently. Jeff has hung up the same pictures and brought over the furniture, but it just doesn't feel the same. The lighting is fancy and there are all sorts of new knobs and switches. Give it and us some time. We'll be around to answer your questions, fix bugs and help you out.
thanks,
Trei

With the better screen width and the avatars, it's pretty nice. Load times are the only thing I'm still sad about besides FanShots

With it being wide
and being able to disable avatars, it's not so bad.
Okay, now we need to get rid of the mandatory preview and add a [new] for easy search browsing.
Otherwise I think I can adapt.
AN loaded a little slower on my phone, and while this is a little bit slow too, it's not so bad. But faster mobile support would be nice.

I'm not saying I can't get used to it. Just saying it doesn't make much sense.
People who are going to post stupid stuff are going to do it whether or not they have to preview first. I don't really care if I miss a typo or something, and I'm sure most people won't even look at their preview before they post it. It's a novel idea and I can get used to it. But it just is really, really unnecessary.

:Crawls out from under desk:
First quick impressions:
Optional avatars? Awesome.
Wider screen? Also awesome. Though, for us 1680x1050 types, will there be more options in the future?
Mandatory Preview, still needs to go. Making it optional like the avatars, would also be awesome.
It's gonna take some getting used too. But now that the bomb has dropped, I think ultimately we can live with it, barring some improvements.
Thanks for listening to our concerns. You probably saved a few hobo's lives by doing so. I imagine NFE(New Format Emotion) would be twice as worse as GTE.

They seem....redundant to me. If we wanted our own little section to post pictures of videos we'd just make a dair....err fanpost.
I see we have the option of deciding how many fanposts, fanshots, ect we want to view on the page. How about adding a 0 option in there? So we can basically turn fanshots off.

Quick thoughts on SB Nation 2.0
Honestly, even during its early rollout with Athletics Nation I always liked the idea of having a lot of built in content. I kinda like having schedules, rosters, news, etc. right on the site.
My main concern was the general feel of the site. I didn't want this at the expense of a nice, easy interface of the old Lookout Landling. Scrunched up columns and comments? Avatars that are too small to be effective and annoying in numerous numbers? Yuck.
MAJOR props to Trei and friends for including Widescreen and the disabling of avatars. That instantly made me want to check out what the new SB has the offer.
In all honesty, the new comment system is friggin' sweet. Live updates without refreshing!? That means no more hammering the server with non-stop refreshing during game threads...possibly. Take out mandatory previews and I think this would be a pretty big upgrade over what we had before.
I'm on board the new format. So far, I like what I see.
Added Note: Speaking of previews, I tried hitting the preview button earlier but it wouldn't respond (possibly due to server lag). I had to copy my text and hit the refresh butting (knowing I would lose my text). Probably just an early bug that will be fixed but just something to note.
by ThundaPC on Mar 26, 2008 1:06 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
lag was due to some heavy database activity
we were doing backups and some heavy clean-up of content that came through in the import during migraton

Can I just add
that the preview of the new format WAS on AN. And their team colors are just obnoxious.
Seeing a new format in bright yellow and nasty green is much more annoying than navy-ish and teal-ish.
That might have added to our hatred. Just my two cents.
by PShwa on Mar 26, 2008 1:09 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll second this.
Our colors are nicer.
Though I would not mind a very light blue for new comments, rather than yellow, to match the style of the website. Maybe a teal. Yellow doesn't fit with the rest of the Mariner theme.

No, they only update every 20 seconds
My experience is that 20 seconds FEELS really fast; in an active thread, comments are often pouring in faster than I can read them. But you can judge for yourself when you try out the new system on a real game thread.
I'm one of the guys that built the new SB Nation
by lovitt on Mar 26, 2008 1:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
How fast can the refresh rate be set
Without overloading the system or bog things down? I know 20 seconds is probably great in general but in real heated game threads 5 or 10 seems like the sweet spot.

We're (mostly) Seattle based or displaced from Seattle.
That means we're total tech dweebs that love the Interweb. Being that we're pretty much very, very, very dorky, it makes sense that we would care most about making minor changes that are huge to us but everyone else would think was negligible.

The SB Nation dev team is a group of four - in Austin, DC, and me in Santa Barbara. I'm working as our visual/css designer, though we discuss and implement feature and interface changes as a group. And last summer we had designer working with us to mockup the blog interfaces, though they've evolved since then. It's a pretty awesome team.

I've got pretty good eyesight but view my screen at a slight angle downwards (I know you're not supposed to, bleh bleh bleh).
The problem being that the yellow is too close to the white to distinguish those new posts. Even when I level-up they're too similar to differentiate at a v.quick glance.
It's a big ask, but any chance of something a bit darker, or even better, optional colours?

Another question about auto-refresh
I know it's presently set to every 20 seconds which will be great for threads like these in general but what is the fastest refresh rate that can be set without overloading the system or bogging things down? It seems like 5 to 10 seconds would be the sweet spot. Otherwise, I'll probably do a manual refresh during Awesome/WTF plays in game threads.

Ok
First, I'd like to express my surprise and thanks that that wide/narrow thing was taken care of, the avatars were removed, and search is being worked on. These were my primary concerns and I am extremely happy that they were addressed.
This obviously isn't perfect, but the fact you've been willing to make changes for us has taken away a lot of the crap I was planning on giving you guys today.
HOWEVER. You're still not getting away free.
My tertiary complaints are as follows:
'FanPosts' and 'FanShots' are currently limited to a restricted set of view options. Please make them more liquid, and please add the option of viewing zero FanShots, for those of us who just aren't interested.
Please let the admins change the names of FanPosts and FanShots to something that doesn't sound like the person contributing to them is twelve. A silly complaint, I know, but there you go.
And now the stuff I notice immediately:
New comment highlighting - the C command tabs through comments, but doesn't really tell you which comment you're on. Perhaps a deeper highlight could be applied?
The post comment box is too narrow. Please consider allowing this to fill all available space. It's currently managing roughly half of the grey box.
Typing into the comment box is noticably laggy, for want of a better term. This is annoying, and I'm not sure if it's a problem on my end, or yours. I haven't yet looked at the site in anything other than Opera.
The background for the side and bottom bars are too dark. Seriously, that green's so close to black that it needs to be using protection.
Ok, I think I'm done (apart from such minor issues such as 'where did my admin powers go?).
Cheers.

Z is a default keystroke command in Opera. You can change it in your browser settings somewhere. I wish we tested Opera more when first setting up Z, because now the kids across the 12 blogs we've launched are addicted to it... but we may need to change it.

Do comments still automatically collapse after a certain number....say 500 posts?
by ThundaPC on Mar 26, 2008 2:21 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
there's no automatic threshold, no
For last night's gamethread on AN they've were manually opening new threads after about 450 comments (because of slowness), but hopefully today's round of changes will let us keep them alive longer. We'll keep working at it, and things are only going to get faster and more betterer.

Jeff
First off I want to say you are one of my 5 favorite people on the internet. When I claimed my name for both this and Purple Row, it showed me the guidelines for both sites. The differences were HILARIOUS.
As for the people involved with the transition:
Thank you for keeping my dialup brethern in mind (or just me). The optional avatars mean I can stay. Good job. This is way better than I feared.
by Slica on Mar 26, 2008 2:48 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs

by thenatural on Mar 26, 2008 2:56 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It said
'Dont be mean, unless you're Graham. And dont use an avatar. Dont you dare use an avatar'.
I found it hilarious because I read Purple Row's first, and its all...normal (follow the rules, respect everyone, share opinions nicely etc)...then you got this bipolar one sitting next to it. And the Richie Sexson picture just added to it, reminding me of this place's personality. People will think twice before they join this place.

The wide layout option helps. A lot.
I'm not a fan of the yellow display for new comments, though. Maybe it's because I just woke up and I'm groggy, but it's hard on my eyes.
I'd rather not have to "preview" my comments, too. Diaries Fanshots? Sure. But not comments.

When the designers wake up.
Just a quick, not important feature that I found nice.
Could you put a expand/collapse in the comments eventually?
Also, the Diaries are low, and there is a bunch of space in between the "Recent" and normal diaries.
Also, recommending is stupid for diaries. We don't have enough that it will come in handy. I feel that functionality should be moved to the pics.

Initial thoughts
Having sat through the morning and the Oakland-Boston game thread, here's my thoughts on LL v2.0...
1) Preview is good, but not conducive to a quick response and then move-on style. Would it be possible to make it mandatory for fanposts but not the comments? I don't mind (in fact, approve of) a preview option (I'll use it for big comments like this one), but it does slow things down as it stands.
2) I like the z/x/c thing, that works very well. I'm just not working with the colour so well. Everything else colour-wise is fine, but that yellow is so very difficult to differentiate from the white when viewed from an elevated angle.
3) Auto-update is cool.
4) What's the point in recommending a comment? Where does it appear if I do recommend one? It would make more sense to recommend a post than its comments.
5) Thread hierarchy works well, although I'm gagging for a [go to parent] option or something like that
6) I keep getting these obscure, tiny little arrows appear on the RHS, kind of like the tab markers that you get on the horizontal ruler in MS Word, only a few pixels in size and shaped like a mirrored 'L'. They're often in the area that I'm currently operating in, but disappear if I attempt to adjust the width. It's not important, but it's bugging me.
7) Archives are good. I'm glad to be able to fumble through by period. Thank you.
8) The post (not the comment) subject lines are way too big in font size. If I'm trying to sort through recent activity I have to adjust my focus, and it would be so much easier to sort through a list that were a more conservative and less imposing size, like 14 or 16 points.
9) Despite the auto-update, it's still possible to double-post with someone else, or to post garbage even with the preview. I'd love an option to edit my own posts (and only those ones that haven't been replied to - there's no point in allowing someone to change a comment that's already got child comments of its own, that'll just encourage abuse).
Overall, not as bad as I had built my expectations for, and some features are really, really good. But content > style every time, and there's some really mega style things that stick out like a sore thumb.
Keep up the good work, cheers.

Okay, so there was one other thing
10) Time zones - we're currently on GMT but move to BST (GMT+1) on Sunday 30th March. There's no BST option currently, and PT is currently GMT-7 with daylight saving already incorprated. So are most users on -7 or -8? And will that change on Sunday?
Not hugely important, but it's just going to irritate me a bit :O)

Oh, this is going to be really annoying
Comments. You can't open up a comment or subthread individually for linking back to. Instead it opens up the ENTIRE THREAD again, and moves you to that comment. With load times as absurd as they are, this is really irritating.
by Graham on Mar 26, 2008 6:46 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not sure if someone mentioned this
I've been using the narrow screen for a year, and it is very nice to go back to the wide screen. The one thing I don't like about it is that there is a very wide left side margin on the wide screen which makes it difficult to distinguish "original" comments from replies. it would be nice if those were made smaller (or eliminated).
The A's colors are green and gold.
by mikeA on Mar 26, 2008 7:04 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not bad. (In fact, mostly good.)
I like the style. I like that I don't have to go to another site to look at the roster or schedule. I like the wider screen and the option to turn off avatars, of course.
Not a big fan of FanPosts and FanShots. It's like you hired an outside firm to come up with those names. They're visions of a marketing professional and they make me cringe every time I read them. Diaries and Photos would work just fine and not make me feel like I'm being slimed.
You guys (the devs) handled this transition really well, though. I think it was smart to do one site at a time while soliciting tons of feedback from the writers and dedicated readers. Over at Metblogs, the transition to a new design and platform has been torturous. It's too bad they didn't take your approach.

Goddammit SBN
I shut down Firefox last night all ready to wake up this morning and RAGE AGAINST THE FUCKING MACHINE at how horrible this new layout is, and how it's ruined my week, and possibly my marriage and my entire future - then...you made it not suck so bad! The width thing is a TREMENDOUS improvement, thank you for doing that and for making avatars optional.
I echo most of the other improvement ideas above, plus I have one other - I notice that when all comments are cycled through using either Z or C, and there's no more new comments, keyboard navigation of comments no longer works. This is mildly irritating. I don't like my mouse, and I'd rather not use it - is there any way that some sort of keyboard nav can still work once all comments are read

you should be able to keep cycling through the new comments. that's as long as you don't unmark them with the X key.

One other thing I've noticed this morning
is that the the layout widths are fighting with each other for supremacy. I have mine set to "wide", but every time I load a new page, it loads as "narrow", then goes to "wide", sometimes twice. Load times, also, are not so bueno for me (FF 2.0.0.12, XPsp2) - but right now I'm on my company's computer/network, so that could be part of it.

ah, we haven't heard about that width changing behavior before...weird
also, we're well aware of the load time issues. it's particularly a problem in firefox 2 so we're trying to hunt it down in that browser first.

It's incredibly annoying
because when I'm on the front page, it settles on "wide", but in the diaries, it usually settles on "narrow", which is not what I want. I don't know how to describe it technically, but it manifests itself like what happens when you're running a slow greasemonkey script - the page loads as it was designed, then the changes are applied about a second or two later. But in the diaries, it always reverts to narrow.

Same problem, but stranger
it also happens when I use the "top of page" link at the bottom of the screen. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I'm actually using Firefox Portable off a USB stick here at work; I use "regular" FF at home, and I'll have to see if it still happens there when I get home tonight.
This is why I got into the QA business, actually, I'm always that freak that finds the one-off problem that no one else has or can recreate.

we heard this request but it may take us a few days to implement
everything we do goes out to all blogs now, so we have to take into account how it will work for them as well

right
we do have blogger & user customization controls
we really haven't had any issues with the refresh rate in game threads and there have been plenty of fast-paced ones already on large blogs like AN and Bleed Cubbie Blue

by ThundaPC on Mar 26, 2008 8:44 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly
to be honest, i probably wouldn't use it a whole ton, but i anticipate that i'd probably want to try and adjust to suit what works for me, just as happens with the number of posts, fanposts etc that appear on the front page.
it's really low priority, was just curious as much as anything

If this is now entirely universal
Does this mean we're actually stuck with 'FanPosts'?
Granted, Diaries sound a bit silly, but were're a) used to them and b) silly has nothing on FanPosts.
Also, why is SBN trying to integrate between blogs so much? I'm sure I speak for most people when I say that the less I have to do with hellholes like Halos Heaven the better.
by Graham on Mar 26, 2008 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
for now
everyone will have fanposts
first, we had people requesting the ability to have a single account across all of our blogs.
second, we did it more for same-city, cross-sport reasons. now it's easier for y'all to participate on both LL and Field Gulls for example. and even on blogs where it's not necessarily anything to do with a city - we have other sports blogs like MMA (UFC), boxing, NASCAR, minor league prospects (John Sickels), etc.
third, it also makes it easier for us to manage the network as it grows larger. now we can quickly fix bugs and add requested features and content quickly across the entire network.

New thought:
Can front paged diaries be removed from the 'recommended diaries' section? It seems pointless to have them on twice, especially as they display different information from time to time.
I will now wait for the text to catch up to my keyboard.
by Graham on Mar 26, 2008 8:49 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
but not with the keyboard thing. Graham, I think it['s either an Opera issue or something else on your end. Definitely isn't happening here.
Recommended diaries don't seem very necessary at all. They should be under new diaries, not over, if existing at all.

I just want to say thanks
to the devs. I'm a fan of the new design. I guess that might be because I've only been around LL for a year, but I really do think this new system is better, especially since you implemented a widescreen option. A 1680x1050 optimized option would be even better, but that's just getting nitpicky. Anyway, thanks for your work, and thanks for being so responsive.

Question about FanShots...
Okay, since that's what they're officially called...
I have a couple of FanShots that I posted to AN when I registered my UID for global SBN access. Is there an easy way to get them to show up on LookoutLanding, or will I have to upload a second copy of the picture for this place???

Not sure if this is fixable:
It appears that I wasn't able to claim the LL "mikeA" account here, even though the old mikeA and I are one in the same. I like seeing how many comments I've made on my page, so it is a mild annoyance.

Re-arrange right side?
Is it possible to change the layout of the right column? I would find it more familiar with the standings and polls placed above the fanposts. More like it was in the old layout. Not sure how anyone else feels about this as it hasn't been brought up but I think it would be nice.

I also think the layout should be more customisable between sites (and based on the settings I've poked around with, that should be possible, right?)

but then I decided not to. But I forgot to remove the asterisk.
And seven includes Newfoundland:
Alaska
Pacific
Mountain
Central
Eastern
Atlantic
Newfoundland
That's seven.

Also have their own 'time zones' because we don't switch over for daylight savings time..

that doesn't mean you have a separate time zone
just that you exist for half the year in a different time zone than the other half.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
by pdb on Mar 27, 2008 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right. Otherwise I would have listed Saskatchewan separately.
They live in the Central Time Zone, but since they don't adopt Daylight Saving Time, for half the year they live as if they were on Mountain Time, but they're not.
And it's Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time. It's a verb, not a gerund.

My time zone settings are fine.
Everything else shows up in PDT. I'm just wondering why the game start times are listed in EDT? Oakland and Anaheim have PDT. Can we get ours changed? It's annoying enough when MLB.com lists everything in Eastern time.

Funky new bug?
Weird one - there's a particular post that won't let me comment.
The MLS Seattle Update thread won't let me comment anywhere.
Also, I could vote when I viewed the list of FanShots, but couldn't vote when I'd been trying before that in the thread itself. Odd, huh?
I don't know whether it's related or not, but in the same thread, Mariner John's avatar displays a red x (I'm flipping between avatar show/hide) and the wysiwyg buttons appear bungled. If I can get round to it later I'll try to screenshot what I see.
