Liar.
March Madness is just a stupid meaningless tournament of a meaningless sport that almost anyone can play.  And the play is sloppy, they allow too many teams to compete, it's overhyped, and the final product rarely delivers on all the hype.  Plus it's fucking basketball.  It's already the worst sport to watch.

Fuck March Madness.  If only they would move the start of the baseball season 2 or 3 weeks earlier so I didn't have to sit through all this March Madness bullshit.

definitely not a sport that almost anyone can play
anyone can play it badly, but anyone can play any sport badly...

I do agree that basketball is, for the most part, boring to watch. This is why march madness is great though. The last 2-4 minutes or so are the only exciting part, and thats pretty much all you see in most of the rounds.

It's CLEARLY the easiest
of the three "major" sports in this country.  Case in point--one of the greatest Basketball players ever, Michael Jordan you may have heard of him sucked in the minors of baseball.

I suck at every sport but I can play basketball better than any of them.  No major sport is easy, that's just the easiest, most baseball or football players could play basketball, that's all I'm saying.

Plus it's boring as fuck till the last 2 minutes.

theres probably a large amount
of people who are better at basketball than they are at baseball, so using yourself as an example of why is easier is just poor logic. Michael Jordan doesn't really prove it either. I can't think of any professional baseball players who also have tried to play in the NBA (and maybe that's good evidence of some sort of a counterpoint), but even if I could, its not really indicative of which sport is "easier".

by thenatural on Mar 23, 2008 3:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So because
Hahahaha. Now that is a fantastic argument. Let's use 1 persons results and sum up that an entire sport sucks.

One question, if you suck at all sports, how can you say one is easier than the others?

You say that you can play basketball better than the others, that's probably because you make a few shots out of random chance. Any jackass can throw the ball at the rim and by luck will make a few. That doesn't mean you can play basketball.

If you don't know anything about other sports, keep your mouth shut. I don't know jack about hockey, but I don't attempt to tell others that it sucks.

If you want to say that it isn't interesting until the final 2 minutes fine, but saying the sport sucks because you can't wrap your mind around it is worthy of a demotion to Halos Heaven

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out
that MJ did devote his life (up until he switched to baseball) to becoming the best basketball player in the world. That may have something to do with the fact that he is better at basketball than baseball. Maybe.

No way dude.
Football is the easiest.  In order to do well there you just have to be big, strong and fast.  That's all you need to knock over the guy in front of you.  Yes there's a bit of skill involved but nothing like you need to be in the Majors or the NBA.

by coolguyrob on Mar 23, 2008 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Precise timing.
If someone is a split second off their route in football, the play breaks down and if you're able to save it it's miraculous and incredible.

In basketball if someone's a split second off, who cares, you can just wing it and score anyway.

Have just been 'working on my project'
aka 'watching Match of the Day', and the highlights of the Liverpool game were disgusting. Mascherano is a complete and utter tool. And Liverpool were terrible even with 11 men. With 10 it was hopeless.

Seriously, their defense reminds me of the way 10 year olds play football. EVERYONE CHARGE AT THE BALL SHIT THEY PASSED IT TO ROONEY.

Football is the only sport I'm aware of
in which people make the top professional league despite never having played before.

Antonio Gates - basketball player, gets drafted by SD because they like his athleticism, instantly becomes an all-pro.

I love football, but there's simply no way it's harder than basketball.   If for no other reason than you can't get someone else to come in and play defense for you.

but congrats to you.  UCLA would probably have won it either way.

by Patrick517 on Mar 23, 2008 7:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't watch the whole game...
the whole thing may have been poorly officiated, but on that last drive that Sloan made, he clearly got fouled.  He should have been given the opportunity to sink a couple of free-throws.

I also didn't like the show-boating slam-dunk that sealed it.

by Patrick517 on Mar 23, 2008 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As a guy who's seen his share of Pac 10 b-ball
UCLA's been getting those homer calls all year long.  As you noticed, it sucks.

by Gomez on Mar 23, 2008 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gomez
It's not really fair assert that UCLA has been getting a ton of homer calls all year. Yes, we have certainly benefitted from some questionable refereeing decisions, mainly the foul call on Darren's drive into Lawrence Hill three weeks ago.

Look at these pictures from the LA Times though - these are Kevin getting fouled and it not being called. Yes, it was a physical game, but if they make the foul calls on those as well, thats's ~3 points for us, and nothing Sloan does matters unless he somehow scores an Australian Rules touchdown against us

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-ucla23mar23-pg,1,1337040.photogallery?index=16

You're entirely right - the officiating this season has sucked, but don't try and say that there's some sort of conspiracy to make sure UCLA wins out there - what about the play when Darren got hooked by an A&M player (believe it was either Kirk or Carter, don't remember for sure) and thrown to the ground, and Darren got called for the foul, resulting in two free throws/points for A&M? What about the four traveling violations against Luc on shot fakes that he always does and ARE NOT TRAVELS. You could very easily argue that the refs gave A&M a shot to make it that close by taking away several possessions from us.

Look, I'm not trying to assert that the officiating has been good this season, or that UCLA hasn't greatly benefitted from some iffy calls. But it has sucked across the board, not just in UCLA games.

by seattlebruin on Mar 24, 2008 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love Pac 10 hoops
which is why the league has to do something about its officials.
They're bad, and while officiating has been poor throughout this tourament, I think the Pac 10 refs are pretty clearly the worst.  I don't understand why this would be, but I get the sense that everyone knows it.

It's probably true in football as well, esp. after the Oregon/Oklahoma game from a few years back.

by marc w on Mar 24, 2008 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've never thought Pac Ten football refs were
all that great, but excluding that Oregon-OU game, they haven't been the unspeakable atrocity that Pac Ten hoops refs have been this season.

On a related note, I know that the refs work games from more than one conference in the area (e.g. Pac Ten guys work Big West, WCC, Big Sky, etc. games as well), and some have speculated that between the number of refs available and the number of games to be done, sheer fatigue has become a factor as it did seem like the problem got worse as the season went on.

Or maybe we just didn't care until the awful calls started mounting.

P.S. to Gomez - You're absolutely correct that the timing of the calls in question was critical - what I am trying to say is that with the quality of officiating in the Pac Ten, do you really expect them to get the calls right in the end game when they can't figure out what the hell to do in the rest of it?

by MarinerintheDistrict on Mar 23, 2008 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What they did with K-State
  • They got Beasley and Walker in foul trouble, which limited how much he could do on defense.
  • They let Beasley and Walker get their points.
  • They clamped down on everyone else, so K-State didn't get enough supporting scoring to win.
Curry's good but he can't score all 60-70 points Davidson would need to win by himself.  They will probably put a guy on Curry, let Curry get his shots and his 30-40 points, but shut down everyone else.  I wouldn't be surprised with a 60-48 Wisconsin win where Curry scores 40 of those 48.

I think that
this year it was actually easier than most years to pick the first round. For instance, there were not really any upsets (besides maybe USD over UCONN) where people were really stunned.

Davidson was a popular upset pick
Siena was known to be good,
Western Kentucky has a NBA 1st rounder
Villanova would be a tough pick to make but they are Big East so it's not crazy.

That being said, it's still extremely difficult. I'm just trying to say that this year it was more achievable than most.

They certainly have a shot
not a great shot, mind you, but the way they're locking up, there's no reason they can't beat Carolina.

I'd be a little concerned about them scoring though. Carolina may not be a team of defensive all-stars, but they're pretty damn athletic, and I could easily see the Danny Green/Marcus Ginyard combo giving Low/Weaver problems.

Plus, I think that Taylor Rochestie is going to get smoked by Lawson (even though I love Rochestie's game - I think he's the MVP of that team)

The NCAA Tournament
is the only time, ever, that Huskies hope for the success of anything WSU related.

So this is the only time I'll ever type this:

Go Cougs.

...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Mar 24, 2008 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
of course they have a chance.
This UNC team lost to a flawed Gonzaga a year ago.  Yes, they're a bit better this year, but they had a lottery pick at forward next to Hansbrough back then.  They still had Lawson/Ellington/et al.

If Baines stays out of foul trouble, he can limit Hansbrough.  Weaver can guard anybody, anwhere.   So it comes down to the other guys - whoever Low and Rochestie guard.
Obviously, NC has more talent and more guys who can score, so they're the favorite for a reason.   But WSU has shown they can play with the top teams.   I doubt it's a blowout.
