You misspelled Villanova.
Seriously, there is no chance Oregon, Arizona, ASU, AND Kentucky get in over us.

Not to mention So. Alabama and Illinois St.

Just compare the resumes and you'll see that we are better than all of those teams.

The Big East may send 8 teams
Also, the SEC final is between sub-.500 Georgia and meh Arkansas.

Just about every bubble team has choked this last couple days, though I'm torn on Nova.  I can see the Pac 10 sending 6 teams (UCLA, Stanford, WSU, USC, Arizona, Oreogn)

Nova has a lot of quality wins, but losing to DePaul and that 5 game skid sure doesn't help.  The Big East could send 8 teams, but someone may have to get royally screwed for Nova to get in.

I find Jeff Sagarin's ratings a pretty solid barometer of team quality, and he has Nova 52nd while the aforementioned Pac 10 teams are in the top 40.  That said, the Big East is really good this year, and Nova does have 5 top 50 wins, so I could see them getting a spot.

The objective analyst within me ...
almost places Villanova ahead of Oregon and Arizona State, but definitely nowhere near replacing Arizona, Kentucky, Southern Alabama, and Illinois State.

The problem with Villanova, Ohio State, and Massachusetts is that those teams don't have the conference record to compete with Kentucky, the SOS to compete with Arizona, and the RPI to compete with Southern Alabama and Illinois State. Oregon and Arizona State, moreover, play in the nation's toughest conference.

That's my observation.

by AK1984 on Mar 15, 2008 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Idk,
conference wins aren't everything. Kentucky has some awful awful losses and the SEC isn't as strong as the Big East. Also, our RPI is actually better than theirs, something like #49 vs. #60 after their game.

Villanova has a top-50 RPI, has wins over 5 NCAA teams (UConn, WV, GMU, Temple, Pitt) incl. a bullshit loss to G-Town. We've also beaten a solid Syracuse team twice, and were no joke robbed against NC State. Also we were .500 in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.

IMO, we're in barring shenanigans with the B10 and SEC tomorrow

As was with Virginia Tech, Villanova ...
has apparently failed to solidify its tournament hopes by not defeating an upper-tier team.

North Carolina and Georgetown have seemingly sent VT and 'nova, respectively, to the NIT. The Wildcats still have a better chance than the Hokies at dancing tomorrow, but it's a slim shot nonetheless.

by AK1984 on Mar 15, 2008 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Big difference, though,
VT has one top 50 RPI win, against Miami.

We have beaten Pitt (BE Champ) and UConn in the Top 25, WV and Temple in the top 50. This excludes Syracuse twice, who was an NCAA team till we thrashed them.

Our resume is 1000x better than VT's.

I don't think you guys are in
but I wouldn't make the argument that Nova doesn't have a case. Several sold wins and you gotta figure if they split NC State and G-Town, they're 21-10, RPI ~40 and a lock.

Just goes to show what one horrible call can do to your season. I'm sure seattlesundevil has the same thought right now.

Speaking of horrible calls
When does UCLA plan on sending the Pac 10 refs thank you cards for those 3 conference wins they handed them this month?

by Gomez on Mar 15, 2008 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's wrong with you, Gomez?
Do you really think we've waited this long to send em? We tend to be a fairly polite bunch - when someone does us a big favor, the thank you card goes out right away =)

by seattlebruin on Mar 15, 2008 11:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we have a better resume than
every team other than ASU and St. Joe's. We have more top 50 wins than most teams, 7 or 8 top 100 wins, and half of our losses were to the top 25 teams in the country.

We are an NCAA Tournament team; I just hope the
committee agrees.

Illinois State's resume is nothing to write home
about. No wins over tournament teams, and although the RPI/SOS combo is solid and the lack of bad losses is good, as well as finishing a solid 2nd in a top 10 league, the simple fact remains that ISU had a chance for a statement game against Drake and got crushed. They're only alive because of Bubble Carnage Thursday.

U! N! L! V! U-N-L-V GO FIGHT WIN
From the tip to the buzzer, it was gonna be a blowout tonight.
They were slamming and were racing, they were burning up the court left and right...
There was nothing that could stop em as they drove on down the lane
Fans were going crazy you could hear them start to scream
I got Runnin' Rebel Fever burning up my mind!

My elementary school principal played that song on the loudspeakers every freaking day during the UNLV tourney runs in 1991 and 1992.  I wish I could find video or audio of that damn song so I could share the grating cheese with all of you.

Also, if you told me when I moved here years ago that by 2008 UNLV would have a better basketball program than UW, I'd have thought you were crazy.

by Gomez on Mar 15, 2008 10:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It can't hurt when the conference
tournament is played on your (UNLV's) homecourt. Yeah, no advantage there.

They won last year's too
Which IIRC was not in Vegas, AND they got to the 2nd weekend.

by Gomez on Mar 15, 2008 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You remember incorrectly
http://themwc.cstv.com/champ/07-mwc-bb_tourney.html

I'm not saying UNLV doesn't have a good team. I'm just saying that playing on your home court is a HUGE advantage in college basketball. It's why UNLV has won so many MWC tourneys.

The MWC bball tourney needs a neutral court. Playing at Thomas & Mack is not a long term solution.

http://lybberty.com

by skijake1 on Mar 15, 2008 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the problem
is that Mountain West fans, unlike those of big conference teams, don't really travel.  Vegas is pretty much the only destination locale in the conference.  A tourney at a neutral site would draw nobody.

I'd be okay with moving the tourney to sites near other MWC schools, though.  I thought they were in the first place.

by Gomez on Mar 15, 2008 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're Right
No one wants to go to Laramie or Colorado Springs or Albuquerque.

Vegas is clearly the best of a bunch of bad options. If they could play it at another court in Vegas--anywhere but Thomas & Mack--that would negate some of the home court advantage and make the tournament a little more fair.

I dunno.

http://lybberty.com

by skijake1 on Mar 15, 2008 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's too bad
I wouldn't be opposed to swapping between Salt Lake, Denver, Albuquerque and Vegas each year.  These four locales aren't all home courts and provides a mix of somewhat neutral sites.

It's also not a unique problem to the MWC.  Half of the ACC teams are in two states.  A lot of Big East teams are close to NYC.  The tourney sites inevitably favor certain teams over others.  But I do agree that a tourney should alternate between different sites each year.

by Gomez on Mar 15, 2008 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

On that subject, the Pac Ten
plays at Staples Center, of which two teams are within fifteen minutes driving (and SC is very literally down the street), and everyone else is a minimum of 350 miles away.

It must be noted
Congratulations to Brayden's alma mater, American University, for getting into the tourney.

I hope the favorites win tomorrow
I don't wanna see sub-.500 teams like Georgia and Illinois in the tourney.  I'd rather see a more deserving bubble team get in.

Georgia has to be out of gas
after playing two nail biters in one day (thanks, bad weather!).

by Gomez on Mar 15, 2008 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, seriously that was crazy
I can't imagine playing 2 games in 1 day.

Boise st vs New mexico st. was also crazy.

by MFAN on Mar 15, 2008 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Georgia would be deserving
should they win the SEC tournament. Given what they've been through the past few days, should they get in, I think they'd have proven that they belong.

That and no one on the bubble is particularly deserving this year. If they were, they would have won on Bubble Carnage Thursday.

The only bubble team that I think is really deserving right now is Saint Joseph's.

by seattlebruin on Mar 15, 2008 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

that is true
It's hard to call a bubble team deserving since they are on the bubble.

I respect what Georgia and Illinois have done, and I won't root against them, but I'd rather not have him them in the dance.

Not a big deal though, I'll still be watching every minute of the tourney.

by MFAN on Mar 15, 2008 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kind of nitpicking
But I think CSU-Fullerton is a lot better than a 15. The Big West doesn't suck that badly, and they have some very good players on their team. I think they end up as a 13 or 14, and if they get the right matchup (WISCONSIN), they might have a shot.

Though Wisconsin sure looks like a 2 right now.

by seattlebruin on Mar 15, 2008 11:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wisconsin might get a #2 seed ...
due to Georgetown's loss against Pittsburgh. It's also possible that Tennessee drops to a #2 seed, while the Big Twelve Champion -- which'll be either Kansas or Texas -- moves up the ladder one notch.

I don't see either scenario coming to fruition, though.

My order is
UCLA, Memphis, UNC, B12 Winner
Tennessee, B12 Loser, Duke, Team X

Okay, mock bracket
This assumes the favorites will win the remaining conference tourneys.  As with any bracket, there will be disagreement... and there are multiple factors I probably don't take into account that the selection committee may, like late tourney wins and losses, late hot streaks or cold streaks, injuries and so on.

I do, however, make sure to maintain separation between conference teams, so that none of them can possibly meet before the regional final.

I think you have
West Virginia overseeded, despite their nice Big East Tourney run.

Purdue and Vandy are criminally underseeded - I actually think those are the two biggest dark horses out there.

Otherwise, I really liked your bracket, although I'm not so sure Ole Miss belongs anywhere near the tourney.

I meant to hit reply this during my last post.
Anyhow, I'd like to also add that Syracuse -- as well as Mississippi, which has a sub-.500 record in the SEC this season -- isn't even a bubble team.

After Syracuse lost to Villanova during the first-round of the Big East Conference Tournament, its fate was signed, sealed, and delivered to the NIT selection committee.

Fun fact
100% of D-I schools who win their conference tournament make the NCAA tournament each year.  Amazing correlation... one you clearly factored into this sick and excellent prediction.

Speaking of neutral-site conference tourneys
San Diego, a decent but not great team, beat both Saint Mary's and Gonzaga in the WCC conference tournament on San Diego's on-campus home court.

Starting next year, the WCC is taking its tournament to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.  That should be neutral enough, as the WCC does not have a school in Nevada; the closest schools are in the L.A. area.

I know.
WCC tourney:
Great farce or greatest farce?

Considering SD is the only team that's won it besides GONZ in the last ten years, and both were major upsets on their home court.

If they weren't going to play at a neutral site, they should play it on the home court of the #1 seed. Yeah, it's not realistic, but it's fair.

Yeah, the lowest conferences do this
And you still see upsets of the 1 seed, so it's not like the tournaments are a hopeless cause for the other schools.

The conferences just have this problem with seeing $$$ in centralized big city sites, which is half sensible and half pointless.

by Gomez on Mar 16, 2008 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If they hadn't moved it to a neutral site
for the foreseeable future, Gonzaga would have gotten another crack at hosting it since they're the only other team with a reasonable sized arena.

Incredible run: hats off to them.  And some bubble team just got screwed... though most of them sure didn't help their causes by choking this past week.  But I guess that's why they're bubble teams.

Gonzaga got screwed
Davidson is ranked 23 two spots behind Wazzu who got a 4 seed.  Davidson's won 22 straight and gets to play 150 miles from their campus.  The winner is making the elite eight, but unfortunately the winner will Davidson.

Meanwhile Miami (who is terrible) and Butler (who is sick) gets a #7 seed.  The Selection Committee is a joke.

Vanderbilt
Their criminally high seeding for the 2nd straight year has me wondering what sort of sexual relationship their AD has with Myles Brand.  They're an 8 at best.

Michigan State?
Yeah, a 5 would've been warranted if they hadn't stumbled so much down the stretch.  As it stands, giving it to them anyway is a reach.

by Gomez on Mar 17, 2008 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That team is nearly schizophrenic
They play UCLA as tough as anyone has this year, and just utterly cranked Indiana two weeks ago... and somehow score 36 points in a game against doormat Iowa. Go figures.

That team could literally do anything from winning the national title to losing by 30 to Temple and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

You really don't like him?
I actually rather like his game - he's certainly not terribly consistent, but when he's on, the team is very good.

I'd say the problem is that he has some really terrible games more than that he's not a good player.

by seattlebruin on Mar 17, 2008 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i've lived in big 10 country for a few years now..
..watched him play enough to know that his popularity is almost entirely based on the school he plays for.  look at the pan am games.  he was the lowest scorer and nearly the worst contributer on the team.

his inconsistency kills MSU.  how they got a 5 seed is beyond me.  should be closer to 9-10.

An 8 at best?
Wow.  I would love to see you list 28 teams (4 x 7) in the tourney with a better resume than Vandy.

A 4 seed might be one slot too high (though their RPI is 12th, according to ESPN), but your statement is way off, imo.

Okay, let's see
North Carolina
Kansas
UCLA
Memphis
Duke
Wisconsin
Tennessee
Georgetown
Texas
Stanford
Washington State
Xavier
Louisville
Marquette
Drake
Clemson
Pittsburgh
Michigan State
Indiana
West Virginia
USC
UConn
Notre Dame
Butler
Gonzaga
Texas A&M
Purdue
Oklahoma
BYU
maybe even Arizona or Oregon

I'm not going to dissect your list, Gomez -
I'll just say to every man his own opinion of teams.

I just think that any team with an elite college scorer (SEC POY Shan Foster), steady point guard play (Alex Gordon - no, not THAT Alex Gordon), and a solid low post threat (AJ Ogilvie) is always a solid --> good team come March at worst.

Yes, but now Nick Young gets
paintballs shot at him by Gilbert Arenas and Buckwheat Pruitt sits on the bench at the Garden.

That being said, there's not reason why SC can't get to the Final Four with that draw...

by seattlebruin on Mar 17, 2008 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do think
our depth will get the better of us eventually in the tournament. And since we don't have the institutional bias a ucla has in terms of refereeing we're bound to get screwed.

We also don't have the west coast great white hype. That's at least one round off for lack of announcer fellatio being performed on us.

Raul for DH.

by bluemax on Mar 17, 2008 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have SC in the Final Four. It hurts. A lot.
Honestly, the refereeing has been bad everywhere in the Pac Ten this season - who benefited the most from it is only marginally beyond the point. USC got the benefit of a terrible call in the Pac Ten tournament too.

Believe me, most UCLA fans are a little tired of hearing the announcer fellatio as well - the current standing joke is "DID YOU KNOW THAT KEVIN LOVE'S DAD PLAYED AT OREGON?!?! ME NEITHER!!!"

Anyway, I don't think SC's depth is that huge of a problem - the talent level is just too high and barring an OJ or Davon meltdown (which I don't see happening.. well maybe Jefferson...), they should be good to go at least to the Elite 8. You guys would probably face Kansas, who you nearly beat until Super Mario chucked in that miracle 30 footer.

The only really killer game I see you guys playing is vs. Wisconsin, who'll try and make it an all-out war and that might be the one where the depth hurts. I'm not entirely sure Wisconsin escapes CSU Fullerton though - if Josh Akognon gets hot, who knows what might happen.

Eh, who am I kidding. The fan in me is rooting for K-State, just like the fan in you is probably rooting for MVSU ;). The realist in me says that SC has a ridiculously good draw though.

by Patrick517 on Mar 17, 2008 7:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I watch women's basketball
for the fundamentals and team play, even though there is no dunking!

The NBA is just a bunch of selfish jerks going 1 on 1 for the whole game. I want to see aimless passing around the perimeter! I want to see drive and kicks where the ball takes two bounces to get to its intended recipient! I want to see said recipient brick the wide open 15-foot jumper (and by brick, I mean BRICKKKKKKKK woefully short off the front iron)! I want to see team defenses that don't rotate quickly, if at all!

I want to see games in which one team is so clearly superior to the other that there really IS no reason to play the game!

Let's be honest. Someone once asked me "who would win - the #1 HS team in the nation or the current WNBA champs?" It took me .00000003 seconds to say "HS team. Even an average HS team might beat them." That about sums up the WNBA. Needless to say, not a fan.

I'd watch the WNBA before I watch NASCAR
I'd watch the WNBA before I watch pro bass fishing.
I'd watch the WNBA before I'd watch televised card-playing, of any type.
I'd watch the WNBA before almost any ESPN shouting-head show.

The WNBA ain't that terrible.

I find it really odd that NASCAR is most popular
in red states.  NASCAR's entire structure is built around preventing acheivement and knocking down people who get ahead through innovation.

It's kind of communist.

Is anyone else pissed about the Tourney
starting so late?  It used to be my bridge to Opening Day.  Now the Final 4 is a week into the baseball season.

Last weekend my internal sports clock kept telling me I was supposed to be glued to the first 2 Rounds.  My March has been all screwed up.  I used to love watching Opening Day and then running to the bar to watch the Final.
