I laughed pretty hard after hearing what Ichiro had to say about his first hit of the Spring.

"I'm not sure what my next challenge is but for today, my feeling is sad, sad to say goodbye," he said. "Part of me is sad that it couldn't have gone on a little longer. But part of me realizes I have to show some results."

Ichiro said that as far as he knew, no one with the team was commemorating the hit. "I was planning to keep the ball and send it to Cooperstown but I couldn't get the ball back and make it a reality."

Has to be one of the most quotable athletes out there.

It would be funny if he was actually saying generic cliches, and his translator was making all of this up.

A Japanese friend said

that translations of Ichiro's quotes (from last year at least) are very literal and almost word for word what Ichiro is saying.

Is it me, or has he opened up a bit

in the past year, year and a half? It seems like before then you seldom got quotes from him (even though they were gold), and now you hear quotes from him all the time.

"Why is it every time I need to get somewhere, we get waylaid by jackassery?"

Last year I figured he did it

to distract the press from his contract situation. When they knew they could get awesome quotes from him (sometimes about Cleveland), they would bother pressing him on the contract issue.
