I think it was Phelps.
But don't quote me on that. I do recall the game you're talking about though.

Was on 5/6
Phelps was the culprit. Your friend is stupid.

Doesn't that go without saying?
He did state that he was a "douchebag yankee fan". I'm pretty sure that's a synonym for stupid.

A TB 2B took a spring training
game a little too seriously, and ran into the catcher at home, fracturing the catcher's wrist.

Or at least I believe.

Then today, a Yankee pitcher threw at Evan Longoria, which led to a benches clearing "incident."

by redwolf75 on Mar 12, 2008 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Right
Though the brawl happened after Shelley Duncan took out Akinori Iwamura at 2b.   Jonny Gomes tackled Duncan, unpleasantness ensued.

by marc w on Mar 12, 2008 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Poor Gomes
He probably thought he was saving the world from the zombie apocolypse.

Bad luck on the shootout, by the way.

I was rooting for you guys too
And Everton.

Would have been a terrible day if not for Lampard the Magnificent. Against Derby, but still.

I didn't realise
That I was in the domain of such a knowledgable follower of football. I'll just throw all of my old Chelsea posters away. And that little doll of Dennis Wise that sits on my desk? Gone. The 1994 kit that fit 8 year-old-me? I'll BURN it.

I should have known that continuing to support a team AFTER they got good meant you're a horrible glory-hunter. My apologies.

Go... uh... Rushden and Diamonds? I assume they still suck. I'd support my hometown team, but I still hate them from when they were Wimbledon.

haha.
dennis wise was a prick.

by deacvision7 on Mar 12, 2008 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't bother
All the Chelski comments tend to be from jealous fans of other teams.

And I say this as a Liverpool fan.

visiting A's fan.

Earlier this week a guy from TB
took out the Yankees catcher. So today a Yankee did a take out slide on the TB 2B, and some hell broke loose.

Redwolf and I apparently read
two different descriptions of the events.

I heard Longoria just got his jersey brushed by a pitch, everyone was warned, then Duncan leveled the 2B on a force play, leading to the scrum.

Same basic idea though.

by Thingray on Mar 12, 2008 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Well...
both teams had already been warned before today's game even started due to the incident earlier.   So when Longoria got hit, the pitcher was immediately ejected.
Then Duncan did what he did.....

by marc w on Mar 12, 2008 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Gotcha.
I just didn't think that the Longoria pitch as what started the ruckus.

My bad --
I took a cursory glance at an mlb.com article about the incident, and missed the part about Duncan's slide.

by redwolf75 on Mar 12, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I heard
Longoria spit in Heath Phillip's general direction while at-bat in the bottom of the 1st inning. Iwamura thought this was funny and was caught smiling about it by the Yankees' dugout.

Then, in the top of the 2nd inning, Shelley Duncan ran out from the dugout and took Iwamura's knees out with a baseball bat while he was trying to field a routine groundball.

Gomes wanted in on the action, came in from RF, and held his teammate down as Duncan began working on Iwamura's toes.

Iwamura couldn't stop laughing about what was happening because he thought it was an honor to take on a beating.

The umpires broke things up and had to eject Duncan and Gomes because Iwamura though it was funny what they were doing to him.

I didn't see the game, this is just what I heard. I could be wrong.

Duncan's Ty Cobb slide
didn't help. Made a hell of a picture, though.

by OldFan on Mar 12, 2008 6:14 PM PDT reply actions

Let's not be overdramatic
it was a stupid thing for Duncan to do, but it wasn't going to ruin anyone's life.

by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 12, 2008 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Iwamura will be fine,
but Duncan put that spike right on Iwamura's knee. I have seen a person's athletic career end on a stupid play like this.

by Wilder83 on Mar 12, 2008 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally agree
But how often does a baseball player come along with a girls name?  When you are 35 going on 13 like myself it just has to be said.

Also, I find myself very excited and anxious to see how the Rays perform this year.  I feel like this could be their 1993 Mariner season.

by Sec 108 on Mar 12, 2008 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm just annoyed
because my friends and I spent the entire M's/Rockies game yesterday agitating for a spring training bench-clearing brawl, because it always seemed so unlikely.  And stupid.  And then it happens, on the other coast.

I don't understand why
people found that so offensive. If he wrote "Fuck The Red Sox", than yeah, that's going to far, but what he did was simply amusing.
