Top 50 Mariner Moments, 2007: #7
April 2nd: With two down in the top of the sixth, King Felix strikes out Shannon Stewart.
----------
Honestly, Felix's entire Opening Day performance was a top moment, but because I'm limiting myself to individual events, I'm going with this strikeout of Shannon Stewart because it slammed the door on an inning in which Oakland advanced a runner to third base with one out in a scoreless game. This was Felix issuing a statement to the Athletics that he wasn't going to give up a run, so they might as well stop trying.
I'm also going with the idea that, when a pitcher's able to make a batter do this on an 0-2 count, the moment requires no additional explanation.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that, were it not for the injury, Felix would've finished the season as one of the best pitchers in baseball.
May 2008 bring us what we so rightly deserve.
