Beer Puzzle: Tell me what beer to buy tonight

I want to try something new. I'm visiting my parents who live in a rural town, so unfortunately it can't be anything too rare or exotic because it has to likely be available at an Albertsons. I've taken suggestions like Jubelale and Dead Guy, and I've loved them both, so with all the different beers I've seen on the site, I figure you guys can go 3-for-3.

Here's another twist: I'm taking it home, my roommate pitched in, and he's an amateur. His favorite beer is Coors Light and even thinks Corona is too bitter without a slice of lime in it. He doesn't like many darker beers like scotch ales, so the oatmeal and chocolate stouts are out (which were delicious, by the way). A pilsener would be a good choice because he's tried and likes St. Pauli Girl and Pilsner Urquell.

I now leave my taste buds for the week in your hands.

Widmer Crimson Wheat if you can find it
Pyramid Hefe if you can't and haven't tried that yet.

Scuttlebutt Blonde also.

I'm ehhh on Pyramid.
It's a step above Bud, but it's no microbrew. I want a beer that makes me say I'm glad I bought it.

I used to thin Deschutes is Da Shits
And thought Sierra Nevada rocked, but I'm past that.  I'm starting to think Stone beers (and most Rogue beers) are not good enough either.  My mom and dad tried telling me about German beers, but I could never find good ones.  Now that I have, most Micros suck.

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

Wow
I didn't think there existed a level of beer appreciation at which Stone and Rogue are rendered inadequate.

by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 2, 2008 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

that's not appreciation
that's... I don't even know what that is. It's like beyond snobbery.

Well
since my normal Tequila is ~60 per fifth, and I spend 30-50 for a bottle of wine, that should tell you something about me and alcohol.

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

Not all Rogue or Stone
and it's not inadequate, it's more like, if nothing else is available.

BTW, a friend of mine has been letting me sample aged Barley Wines he brewed, god those are good.  I want to start making my own beer.

My wife thinks a little of both
but it's probably more the latter.  BTW, Rogue and Stone are my fallback beers (I just bought two bottles of bullfrog ale).  I may have overdid the AB, but I'm just not sure it's that good of a beer (Dead guy either), but double bastard IS some good shit.  It could just be that I'm just sick of them.  I have a soft spot for Elysian, but they seem to be joining the list of fallback beers as well.

Spaten Pils > Bitburger. Bitburger is indeed good, but the Spaten just has that really nice, dry finish that I crave in a Pilsner.

You're right.
And the more I drink it, the more I like it. For something that goes down so smooth it sure has a lot of flavor to it. I really like the aftertaste. I just read the label and it says it goes good with an orange slice, and I might have put too much orange in it but I know I'd like it more if I hadn't put in so much.

Moose Drool is really unpredictable.
Seriously, some times I've had it and loved it, other times I've thought it was terrible. It seems pretty consistent on tap though, and it's a nice accompaniment to a milder scotch if there's not another decent brown ale on tap.

by thepull on Mar 1, 2008 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

If you like Blue Moon Belgian White
Try some of the beers that it is a knock off of: Hoegaarden is the Belgian white ale standard, availability is kind of hit or miss - in Boise, it shows up in 6 and 24-packs at WinCo once a year with no rhyme or reason. Sam Adams White Ale is a good domestic choice, and it's in most grocery stores right now as the Sam Adams seasonal. Franziskaner hefe-weiss is really, really awesome, and pretty cheap. I can't recommend it enough.

by Jordan of Boise on Mar 1, 2008 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

I've tried the Sam Adams White Ale.
I liked it better. Haven't tried it with an orange slice though. Do you think it has orange peel in it like Blue Moon?

by Double06 on Mar 1, 2008 11:59 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, it does
Coriander and orange peel are pretty common in most Belgian white ales.

by Jordan of Boise on Mar 2, 2008 8:38 AM PST up reply actions

Even though it's not the one I recommended
I'm still somewhat flattered. And Blue Moon is actually a pretty solid choice given the situation. It's a good bridge beer, if you will. Kind of like how you have a friend who has bad taste in music so you make them listen to Pinkerton, and they like it, so then you make them listen to Pet Sounds and they like that, too, and then, a year down the line, they're buying Wire bootlegs on eBay.

Or something. I'm on my fourth New Belgium Springboard. Yum. Wormwood.

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 1, 2008 11:53 PM PST up reply actions

hmm
Really it seems like you are in an impossible situation.
I would just buy a 12 pack of Session lager by Full Sail and call it good.
It's not the most impressive beer in the world, but it goes down easy, is not too scary for a Macro beer drinker and the bottles and caps are cool.

by thepull on Mar 1, 2008 11:32 PM PST reply actions

Session is a great party beer.
I brought a case to the Oscar party I went to on Sunday. No one can turn down the tiny bottles.

The only problem is that they're deceptively small; they're 11 ounces, which is only an ounce smaller than what's in a six pack, but they seem much tinier, so it can get out of hand pretty fast. Like I did at the Oscar party. "Yeah, motherfucker, I drink yer' milkshake, woo!" And then I fell into some guys fence on the walk home.

beer glasses
A good beer glass helps for sure. I don't know about   it needed it to taste good though.

Speaking of duvel again, the Duvel tulip glass is probably the best all around glass for beer drinking.

by thepull on Mar 2, 2008 12:09 AM PST up reply actions

hope I don't get to that point.
Because I'm a klutz and break glasses left and right. I have a few pint glasses that I drink out of sometimes, mostly hefeweizens, pilsners and summer ales during the warmer months, but I generally go straight from the bottle.

I like to keep my beer sonbbery grounded, because I go to a lot of punk rock shows and I don;t want to not be able to enjoy a Rainier from the bottle or ten if the situation calls for it.

I will say, however, that on the few occasions I've had a beer served in the correct glass, it made a pretty noticeable difference. Maybe I will buy some worthy glasses for the nice Belgians I treat myself to every now and again. If I'm spending $12 on a beer, I might as well enjoy it to the fullest extent possible.

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 6:36 PM PST up reply actions

I have a few general guidelines...
Sweet or fruity ales, I'll pull out the Lambic glasses.  I'm tempted to classify White Ales this direction, too, and use the Lambic stemware.

Duppel or Tripel ales definitely go in the Chimay glass.

Heavier beers (rauchbier and porters) tend to be poured in the rauchbier glass (although I usually use a larger standard beer glass for porters, since I usually buy larger bottles).

German beer I drink out of a stein.  Generally the Ayinger stein, since that's usually my German of choice.  Rauchbier is good in a stein, though, too.

My local QFC carries it.  It's fairly pricy ($3.99 for a 16 oz bottle, but it's been on sale for $2.99 for a couple weeks).  It is the yummiest pilsner I've found in a bottle.

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 12:53 AM PST reply actions

not bad
I just expected a bit more for the price - and for the fact that it's basically a pils.

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

This might meet your criteria
http://www.bardsbeer.com/

personally, meh, but given where, and your friend, and they MIGHT carry it.  Personally, I'm getting to the point where even stuff like Deschutes and Sierra Nevada are too low quality.  Rogue (Bullfrog ale, yum), Stone, Elysian are the only Micro's I'll touch at the local store most of the time, otherwise it's German beers.  I'm pretty sick of Belgiums, but I hope I can get over that soon.

Also, if you can get it, and don't mind taking a HUGE risk (and paying a bit), perhaps find a Kriek Lambic, I've found a lot of non-beer snobs like them.  Unfortunately, most places only carry Lindemans if they carry lambic, and Lindemans is OK, but not so much.  A good Geuze can be really yummy too.

MGD lite isn't really

by TheMarinator on Mar 2, 2008 3:38 PM PST up reply actions

I had a smiliar argument with my cousin.
She lives in suburban Nashville, where good beer isn't really available. I ordered a beer when we were out at dinner, and she started in on how only wussies drink beer, blah blah blah. She then called me a wuss for drinking beer as much as I do. I offered her a sip of my la Fin du Monde. She shut her mouth pretty quickly after that.

Still, the whole stereotype of "real men drink whiskey and nothing else" really, really bugs me. Along with pretty much any other stereotype involving the phrase "real men".

Real Men Don't Root For the Mariners
but if I drink enough whiskey, it makes me feel like one after watching Raul Ibanez makes feeble attempts at catching balls Adam Jones could make blind and with one hand tied behind his back goddamn it!

Are you People Shitting me?
la Fin du Monde?

LA FIN DU MONDE!!!!!?

What kind of fruity tutti beers are you people drinking? Does that have little pink sugar cubes inside that people shove up their bums after they're finished?

Please, if you are trying to argue beer vs whiskey do not throw out a beer from the heart of gay Paris for crying out loud.

I know you're trying to provoke and be funny.
But really, it's just annoying. If I thought you were being ironic it probably wouldn't bug me as much as it does.

Hey, I said it was under construction.
I feel dumb. I never would have noticed that, though, so thanks for pointing it out.

Mothership is decent
but not the best wit I've had.  Then again, how many wit's can you find at Safeway!

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely not the best
But it's a solid effort and, like you said, widely available.

I just dropped in at McMenamins for lunch
and picked up a quart jar of whatever their current seasonal Pale Ale is (can't remember the name, don't see it on the website).

I had a sample of it, it tasted rreeaallllyy good, not as full body as a lot of pale ales, but still very hoppy.  I can't wait.

I'm also planning on breaking into a bottle of tequila, I've had orange slices soaking in.

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 5:22 PM PST reply actions

Oh man, that's some
ggoooodd shit.  Even my wife liked it, and she only likes light beers and Pyramid Apricot weizen (another good choice for non-beer snobs trying to get used to better beer).

Also, the tequila is killer.  Take two oranges, slice it up good, put it in a pint of Suaza Hornitos overnight in a bottle, then squeeze the oranges in to it and discard.  God, that's good.  It's super smooth.

That beer from McMenamins
is so yummy.  I've had half a quart so far, and I am so buzzed.  I may have to sneak out and get a Toad Bastard or two.

BTW, Toad Bastard is my wifes nick for Bullfrog ale, since it has a similar color to Arrogant Bastard, and costs even more.  It's much yummier though.  Arrogant Bastard is not worthy.   It's the only beer I'll drink at my local Safeway (closest store).

by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Found it!
After searching for basically forever, I found a case of Session at my local Fred Meyer this afternoon.  Just finishing my first stubby.

Pretty smooth, and has the proper amount of sweet muskiness that old Oly had.  It's pretty darn close to what I remember the Oly Stubbies.  It definitely would make a great lawnmowing beer.

And, yes, I'm drinking it right out of the bottle...

I'm surprised.
A successful beer thread after quite a few recent failures. Good to bring back an old favorite.

Jeff, too bad you can't tag these diaries with the word "beer" and put it on the sidebar, allowing all those looking for a beer to have resources handy. Though if you did that, we'd have less beer threads. Hm...
