Beer Puzzle: Tell me what beer to buy tonight
I want to try something new. I'm visiting my parents who live in a rural town, so unfortunately it can't be anything too rare or exotic because it has to likely be available at an Albertsons. I've taken suggestions like Jubelale and Dead Guy, and I've loved them both, so with all the different beers I've seen on the site, I figure you guys can go 3-for-3.
Here's another twist: I'm taking it home, my roommate pitched in, and he's an amateur. His favorite beer is Coors Light and even thinks Corona is too bitter without a slice of lime in it. He doesn't like many darker beers like scotch ales, so the oatmeal and chocolate stouts are out (which were delicious, by the way). A pilsener would be a good choice because he's tried and likes St. Pauli Girl and Pilsner Urquell.
I now leave my taste buds for the week in your hands.

Oh, right.
One man's opinion:

Seconded.
Spaten, while still castrated upon leaving Deutschland, still is quite solid beer over here. Spaten Premium is one of my favorite deutschexporten...

How's that beer store in Oly by the way?
But yeah, I'd like a better option next time around.

It's not bad...
I haven't tried Spaten
Hm, I'm kind of a beer amatuer, but...

Another LL Favorite seems to be Duvel but I (ducks) haven't tried it yet.
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

You mean Blue Moon belgian White?

You're right.
And I guess I didn't go with acblue's
Oh yeah... Moose Drool. I guess that makes it 4-for-5. Still way better than I could have done without LL.
Moose Drool is really unpredictable.

I would just buy a 12 pack of Session lager by Full Sail and call it good.
It's not the most impressive beer in the world, but it goes down easy, is not too scary for a Macro beer drinker and the bottles and caps are cool.
Session is a great party beer.
The only problem is that they're deceptively small; they're 11 ounces, which is only an ounce smaller than what's in a six pack, but they seem much tinier, so it can get out of hand pretty fast. Like I did at the Oscar party. "Yeah, motherfucker, I drink yer' milkshake, woo!" And then I fell into some guys fence on the walk home.

Must. Find. Session.

Since this is a beer thread...
I can't drink from bottles anymore.
beer glasses
Speaking of duvel again, the Duvel tulip glass is probably the best all around glass for beer drinking.
hope I don't get to that point.
I like to keep my beer sonbbery grounded, because I go to a lot of punk rock shows and I don;t want to not be able to enjoy a Rainier from the bottle or ten if the situation calls for it.
I will say, however, that on the few occasions I've had a beer served in the correct glass, it made a pretty noticeable difference. Maybe I will buy some worthy glasses for the nice Belgians I treat myself to every now and again. If I'm spending $12 on a beer, I might as well enjoy it to the fullest extent possible.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 2, 2008 12:11 AM PST up reply actions
Well...
But, yeah, I have to at least sorta find a proper glass...
I actually own a Schlenkerla glass for my rauchbier, though.

I have a few general guidelines...
Duppel or Tripel ales definitely go in the Chimay glass.
Heavier beers (rauchbier and porters) tend to be poured in the rauchbier glass (although I usually use a larger standard beer glass for porters, since I usually buy larger bottles).
German beer I drink out of a stein. Generally the Ayinger stein, since that's usually my German of choice. Rauchbier is good in a stein, though, too.
by PositivePaul on Mar 2, 2008 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

This might meet your criteria
personally, meh, but given where, and your friend, and they MIGHT carry it. Personally, I'm getting to the point where even stuff like Deschutes and Sierra Nevada are too low quality. Rogue (Bullfrog ale, yum), Stone, Elysian are the only Micro's I'll touch at the local store most of the time, otherwise it's German beers. I'm pretty sick of Belgiums, but I hope I can get over that soon.
Also, if you can get it, and don't mind taking a HUGE risk (and paying a bit), perhaps find a Kriek Lambic, I've found a lot of non-beer snobs like them. Unfortunately, most places only carry Lindemans if they carry lambic, and Lindemans is OK, but not so much. A good Geuze can be really yummy too.
High life is all you need
For a shit beer
And by party
I don't know why the High Life
Whenever my friends are not pitching in properly for beer on our poker night I reach for the 30 pack of High Life at 13.99.

I am a novice Beer-Snob
Anyways, I have become a big fan of Belhaven; Newcastle, all the Sam Adams Ales, and Leinenkugels are among my favorites.
What should I try and find out here in the midwest? I did try Dead Guy and liked it, just think I might have had it hyped up a bit too much. There is actually a pub that serves it here, so I do usually drink that or Belhaven when I go there.
I've tried Dead Guy in the half gallon pirate jug

What kind of fruity tutti beers are you people drinking? Does that have little pink sugar cubes inside that people shove up their bums after they're finished?
Please, if you are trying to argue beer vs whiskey do not throw out a beer from the heart of gay Paris for crying out loud.

"I'll have a Samuel Adams."
I just dropped in at McMenamins for lunch
I had a sample of it, it tasted rreeaallllyy good, not as full body as a lot of pale ales, but still very hoppy. I can't wait.
I'm also planning on breaking into a bottle of tequila, I've had orange slices soaking in.
Oh man, that's some
Also, the tequila is killer. Take two oranges, slice it up good, put it in a pint of Suaza Hornitos overnight in a bottle, then squeeze the oranges in to it and discard. God, that's good. It's super smooth.
by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 6:00 PM PST up reply actions
That beer from McMenamins
BTW, Toad Bastard is my wifes nick for Bullfrog ale, since it has a similar color to Arrogant Bastard, and costs even more. It's much yummier though. Arrogant Bastard is not worthy. It's the only beer I'll drink at my local Safeway (closest store).
by chrisisasavage on Mar 2, 2008 6:31 PM PST up reply actions
Found it!
Pretty smooth, and has the proper amount of sweet muskiness that old Oly had. It's pretty darn close to what I remember the Oly Stubbies. It definitely would make a great lawnmowing beer.
And, yes, I'm drinking it right out of the bottle...
I'm surprised.
Jeff, too bad you can't tag these diaries with the word "beer" and put it on the sidebar, allowing all those looking for a beer to have resources handy. Though if you did that, we'd have less beer threads. Hm...
