Trading LL Heroes

At least since I started reading LL/USSM, it seems like every player that we start championing gets traded.  Doyle first, and now Jones/Sherrill/Mickolio.  It's a bit depressing to see every player whom the blogs are rooting for to be traded.  Just a weird observation.  Maybe we should root to free Richie Sexson or something.

Thought
It will be interesting to see which young player the blogsphere chooses to 'root' for next.  Clement?  Wlad maybe?  Tui?  Aumont?

And then watch them get injured/traded/abducted by aliens.

And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

Nah
He's already established.

Tell me if I'm wring but ... I doubt it will be Morrow.  For whatever reason I don't detect much 'love' for the guy from M's fans online.

How legit of a prospect is Moore?
I want to believe his numbers and increase my expectations for him but I don't want High Desert to get me again.

by Edgar for Pres on Feb 3, 2008 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

More on Moore...
He was drafted as more of a hitter than a catcher, from what I've heard, but he's fitting into the gear quite nicely from the reports I've heard.  Certainly HD inflated his numbers a bit, but he's a decent hitter.  I think he's going to turn into a decent 'spect.  Maybe not an Org-Top-10, but a good, useful player nonetheless.

his line away from HD
0.278/0.332/0.542

Not great, but pretty solid.   He hit more than twice as many homers on the road than he did at home.

Sure, 'the road' includes places like Lancaster, but his season was clearly not just a creation of High Desert.

It stands for people who want everyone to know
that they are saving the environment. Pompous bastards drive Prii.

If you want to save the environment ride a bus. Ride a bike.

by Corco on Feb 3, 2008 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

For once we agree
on something non-baseball.  My favorite, though, is the guy who lives on the next block from me who drives a Ford Escape hybrid - a freakin' SUV - that has a "Go Green!" bumpersticker on it.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 3, 2008 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

My thing is-
if you believe in global warming (and I'm not sure I do), then even if everyone is driving Priuses we are still going to be screwed. All a Prius does is save you some money in the meantime (which, if I insisted on a Toyota I'd take a well-equipped Corolla and pay less if I had the option and still get 40+ MPG.).

It has the added advantage of making it LOOK like you are saving the environment, but people who actually, truly care about the environment are riding bikes and buses around everywhere. Pri-i are simply fashion statements.

Once a viable, useful plug-in hybrid (or other alternative) becomes available then I'll consider all this as legitimate. The Prius is a step in the right direction, but no more or less then any other hybrid or fuel efficient diesel on the market. It merely has the added advantage of proclaiming to everyone that it IS a hybrid. Toyota realized that when they designed it and that's why it sells so well. It's not an act of goodwill to buy a Prius; it's just a great way to boost an ego.

As far as putting the "Go Green" sticker on the back of an Escape Hybrid (which does achieve the best fuel economy of any SUV on the market), that's also just somebody who wanted to inflate their ego.

by Corco on Feb 3, 2008 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

pardon the weird punctuation
in the first sentence of the second paragraph

by Corco on Feb 3, 2008 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

And the thing is,
In the end, hybrids don't even save you money. The battery needs a special recharge every five or ten years that costs a couple thousand dollars. It does less damage to the environment, sure, but you don't save squat. The car companies say that in the future they hope to eliminate or significantly damage the problem, but right now it's no guarantee. And why would they want to be in a hurry to fix it? Not many people who buy hybrids know about this yet.

What I also don't like about the Prius are the hard, skinny tires. I'd rather sacrifice a few MPG to have a wide, soft, grippy tire for the safety and maneuverability.

Also, even when they do mass produce a plug-in car, it won't be green for most people. The power produced usually comes from coal or nuclear generators. Now if you have a lot of solar panels and get a majority of your energy from windmills, then you can call it green. But if those cars become "fashion statements" as well, the same smug drivers are walking hypocrites. You wanna be green? Buy a diesel and make your own biofuel. Buy a high fuel economy car you can fill up with E-85 Enthenol. Buy a car with a fuel cell engine that are now available in the US. But if you're driving a hybrid -- especially an SUV or sports car -- you're not saving the environment, and you can wipe that smug, shit-eating grin off your face.

Refuse to progress!!

by Double06 on Feb 3, 2008 10:34 PM PST up reply actions

few quick points
"The battery needs a special recharge every five or ten years" = the batter will be basically dead in 3-5 years probably.  Battery capacity with NiMH or LiIon technologies degrade fast as a function of time.  Think about your cell phone battery and how it works great for the first 6 months but probably sucks after that.  Same thing with these batteries.  It'll be interesting to see how Prius fuel economy holds up as they age because as the battery capacity dips, the amount of "hybrid" you will have will decrease.  Toyota has a warantee but they don't define when they need to replace the packs (which are a few thousand dollars and not economical to replace).

Another quick note, E-85 isn't that green because the savings when it is made from corn is pretty minimal.  Maybe in the next 10 yrs when its made from cellulose (grass) it'll be better for the enviroment/wallet.  The best thing you can do is to drive less and consume less.  One of the easiest things that makes a huge impact is carpooling or taking pub transit.  Who are we kidding though, I doubt we do much until non-renewable energy gets rare (and hence more expensive).

by Edgar for Pres on Feb 3, 2008 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

FIGHT ON BROTHER!
Seriously though, hybrids are, to my understanding, bullshit. I have read that they don't even provide a net decrease in gasoline consumption, that the gasoline that inevitably provides the electricity that charges the battery nullifies this apparent savings. I don't know how that would correlate to nuclear or hydro energy, though.

The corn thing is bunk, however. It costs a surprising amount of gasoline to work all the processes that are required to cultivate, collect and disperse the corn shit anyways. It also means excess corn goes into our gas tanks instead of into the stomach of starving people. Even I have to feel some disgust at that thought.

Climate change is undoubtedly real -- the climate is always changing and always has been. Global warming as it is called is a bit shaky, but we are surely having an impact on the environment that will make our quality of life worse. We're killing the ocean, for one, and we're also heating it up and increasing the salt levels, which kills off reefs.

However, it is debatable what impact we specifically are having on climate change, and what effect we can muster realistically. Personally, I like the idea of simply blasting the sky with volcanic material or some proper substitute. We could have a major impact on global temperatures this way. That should be studied for its viability.

Willie is ours, and you can't have him

Since Graham's already addressed this concern...
...(shoot the stainless-steel encased waste into the sun), I'd still wonder about how to protect the facilities from 1) Nuclear meltdown/catastrophe and 2) Terrorist thievery...

Solve those two problems, and, hey, let's run the world via nukes!

Ill Ligitamus Non Carberendum

by PositivePaul on Feb 4, 2008 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

You could fly a plane into a nuke reactor
And it would just spash against the concrete. Modern nuke plants are incredibly well built. I'm not really very good with nuclear power, but one of my fellow Sidney engineers is doing lots of work with energy and nuke plants.

by Graham MacAree on Feb 4, 2008 11:37 AM PST up reply actions

Also, I don't endorse shooting waste into the sun
...yet.

Our ability to throw stuff into space without it blowing up is still kinda suspect.

by Graham MacAree on Feb 4, 2008 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

Security and Waste
I've been through a nuclear plant, and they are incredible secure. Furthermore, the chance of a meltdown int erms of what we think of is impossible these days. Plants now automatically shut down if anything gets the slightest out of whack (its called a reactor trip), and the biggest challenge now is solving the problem and/or instrument before the reactor trip happens (which means you have tou 10 seconds before having to reset the whole system).

As for waste, the entirety of an average nuke plants' waste over 30 years can fit into an area thats about 15x15x5 ft. Furthermore, a reprocessing plant can recycle the spend rods indefinitely.
