Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

OT: Sasquatch

Have you seen the lineup for this year's Sasquatch! festival? It's better than Coachella's. It's better than SXSW. It's better than anything.

http://sasquatchfestival.com/2008/main.php?page=lineup

Having REM or the Cure by themselves headlining would have been cool. But it's both. And then you add on artists that are just incredible in their own right, like the Flaming Lips, MIA, Death Cab, the Breeders, Pela, Stephen Malkmus, the Hives, Built to Spill, Beirut, Rogue Wave, Mates of State, New Pornographers, and the National. Then you add in local groups like the Cops, the Blakes, the Cave Singers, Blue Scholars, and Fleet Foxes. Then Flight of the Conchords on top of all that. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

This might make me rethink
my "never again go to a big rock festival" stance.  There's some damn good bands going to be at that show.

Wow, way to judge the dyslexic...
I'm using this everytime now.

And yes, I meant Bret. Is it peculiar that I always somehow screw up one of their names?

I have seen half of those bands
and all of them rock. I can't speak for the other half. Damn, that IS an amazing line up for a concert.

Seen them before
and they just annoyed the piss out of me.  I think it has to do with my dislike of Wayne Coyne's voice, though, more than anything else.

by pdb on Feb 26, 2008 7:47 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but didn't they put on a fantastic show?
I mean Happy Birthday With Blood, people dancing around in furry suits, the giant strobe light hanging from Wayne's neck?

Then again, I saw the Flaming Lips in a small, indoor venue. I have no idea what they're like in a larger, outdoor setting.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 26, 2008 8:16 AM PST up reply actions

Me neither
I saw them at the late, lamented RCKNDY in the mid-90's.  And I'm somewhat of a musical traditionalist - the Young Fresh Fellows put it best, "Two Guitars Bass And Drums" is pretty much all I need.  I'm not a fan of theatrics in my rock n roll.

I didn't know anything about the Flaming Lips when i went to see them, and after I left I didn't want to know any more.  I can see why people like them, they're just not my cup of beets.

They're great
I saw then at the Austin City Limits music festival a couple of years ago and they were a blast. I'm not really even much of a fan of theirs, but they put on a hell of a show.

by Jono on Feb 26, 2008 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

I'm with you
I really don't like their music, and haven't since that damn 'vaseline' was everywhere in like 1993.
I also like small club shows; I'm not really a festival guy (though Sasquatch is cool).

With all of that said, they were great to see.  How can you have a bad time at an event like that?

pdb, I agree with everything you're saying except the conclusion you've drawn.    Yes, Wayne can't sing, and yes, they're not great musically, and yes, in general theatrics are used as a crutch by poor musicians... but damn, they're fun to see.

by marc w on Feb 26, 2008 10:07 AM PST up reply actions

My sister used to date the singer from Shaky Hands
Nick. Never met him.

And I see Death Cab as a must see.

by yourfacemakesmewail on Feb 26, 2008 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

Death Cab is a'ight.
I'm not a huge fan of their music, though I will say that the song "Transatlanticism" was transcendent live. I saw 'em at the Summer Camp Festival in Bend, OR in '05. They were the closing act, so they played after dark, though it was still very warm. The crowd was singing along. Man, that was a beautiful moment.

I love Death Cab
I'm gonna see them in April.

Was that festival at the Les Schwab Amp?

by yourfacemakesmewail on Feb 26, 2008 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

Fantastic.
It was in early September I think (Labor Day weekend), so the weather was perfect. Really warm, but not too hot. The bands were great (Viva Voce, Built to Spill, Death Cab for Cutie, the Decemberists), and like I said, "Transatlanticism" live was spectacular.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 26, 2008 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

The Decemberists were my ultimate
Favorite band and obsession for 2 or 3 years.
Then I met Colin Meloy, and it was a major disappointment.

by yourfacemakesmewail on Feb 26, 2008 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, he's a dick.
I liked 'em for a good long while, but there was a stretch there where I saw them live about 6 times in a year and a half and that really wore me out on their music.

I still listen to their music every once in a while, but I don't connect with it the same way anymore.

Incidentally, I must say
that you have great taste in music for an 8th grader. When I was in 8th grade I would only listen to Jimi Hendrix and movie soundtrack music.

And have you met him? I met him at the Doug Fir in Portland. He wasn't exactly a dick, but he was unfriendly and unappreciative of hearing that we're his biggest fans.

And believe you me, we were.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 26, 2008 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

No, that's not it at all.
I'm saying that the only music I listened to was Jimi Hendrix and soundtrack music. I didn't listen to any other classic rock at all. Just Hendrix.

And really, when I say soundtrack music I mean the Braveheart soundtrack, the Apollo 13 soundtrack, and the Star Trek: Generations soundtrack.

I had a very limited palette.

I want them to make it big
purely for the gigantic stage show they would have to put on. I'm thinking 80ish excess. Full size pirate ship, band boards it on ropes, bass drums wired with cannons, plank for crowd surfing. Oh yes, I have a dream . . .

by DCMariner on Feb 26, 2008 5:09 AM PST up reply actions

The lineup is amazing, I HAVE to go...
By the way if you don't know some of the smaller bands-

White Rabbits and The Heavenly States?  REALLY good live bands.

Interesting...
The last non-Contemporary Christian concert I went to was The Cure.  Either that or Creedence Clearwater Revisited (at the Puyallup Fair).  Not sure which, since both were a fair amount of time ago.

Even I'M interested in going -- and with my ecclectic taste in music, that's saying something...

Money.
The Gorge gets all the camping revenue. There aren't a ton of hotels around that area. Plus, people generally have a long drive there, so they're more apt to spend the night.

Camp across the river in Vantage.
Far less cost and private campgrounds that are not as policed.

by Sec 108 on Feb 26, 2008 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

This is where it's annoying getting old
because after a day in the sun watching good rock shows, I'm gonna want to sleep, not party all night, so I'd probably end up getting a hotel in Ellensburg and making the trek every day.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 26, 2008 9:50 AM PST up reply actions

I do hear you there. Being over 30 sucks.
I gave up playing music because I couldn't drag my ass out of bed the day after late night gigs.

I have also found with age that after watching 3 bands at these festivals the law of diminishing returns sets in and all I want to do is go sit in the shade somewhere.

by Sec 108 on Feb 26, 2008 10:05 AM PST up reply actions

Absolutely.
The fact that I'm even considering going to Sasquatch is testament to how stellar the lineup is - the last festival I went to was probably Endfest in, I dunno, 1992?  The one the Beastie Boys headlined?

And back then, I had no problem seeing music all day and drinking/whatevering all night, but these days I generally need to choose one of the two.

I hear you as well
and I'm only 22...
I dunno, I get real tired after work and sleep 12 hours or so every day during the weekend.
Yeah, listening to music all day, I'd probably just wanna go to sleep and do nothing the next day, not listen to more stuff and party more.

by LantermanC on Feb 26, 2008 10:08 AM PST up reply actions

Eh
I think Sec 108 has it exactly right.   camping on the river in Vantage is a great option; you're quite close, but you might be able to sleep, and you can drink with your pals.

I'm sure you guys would have a rousing good time camping at the gorge.
