you're a college kid
that doesn't have a fake ID?  Huh?  That's unamerican!

IF I had a fake ID
it WOULD HAVE expired in early January

by Corco on Feb 22, 2008 8:11 AM PST up reply actions

We just always get the
Greek foreign exchange student to buy us alcohol. Fake IDs are kind of pointless when there are only two bars in town and everybody knows you on sight.

by Liebkartoffel on Feb 22, 2008 8:33 AM PST up reply actions

I just have no use for one
I have the only car on my floor so when people go on runs I always drive, so I end up in an alcohol purchasing situation at least 4 times a week. I have no use for a fake except bars

How is Grinnell?
I was accepted there, but ended up not going due to their crap offer of financial aid.

Great atmosphere,
a huge workload and some pretty amazing professors. The social scene: well, the college tries with various concerts, lectures and such, but honestly one's options are fairly limited in small-town Iowa. Fridays and Saturdays mostly just devolve into getting shitfaced in various settings.

by Liebkartoffel on Feb 22, 2008 9:36 AM PST up reply actions

Not being in Iowa.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 22, 2008 9:54 AM PST up reply actions

This is an incorrect statement
My only complaint about Iowa is they use the MUTCD standard state highway shield

Otherwise they have a lovely highway system, several rivers, plenty of agriculture, no really big cities but near big cities. All this a perfect state makes

by Corco on Feb 22, 2008 9:55 AM PST up reply actions

Actually, I really don't
mind Iowa. The scenery's kind of boring, but Iowa City in particular is a pretty awesome university town-y type place, almost like Portland in some areas. The weather does suck pretty hard, though--wind chill of -29 a couple days ago.

by Liebkartoffel on Feb 22, 2008 10:02 AM PST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong,
I'm a huge fan of getting shitfaced in various settings, it just tends to lose it's luster when you have almost literally nothing else to.

by Liebkartoffel on Feb 22, 2008 9:57 AM PST up reply actions

Unfortunately, around here
It'd be more like corn or soy-tipping, which isn't nearly as fun.

by Liebkartoffel on Feb 22, 2008 10:03 AM PST up reply actions

OK
You can go out in the middle of the night and cut crop circles

That's pretty fun

by Corco on Feb 22, 2008 10:04 AM PST up reply actions

There was a morning
when I woke up in a field a mile away from campus. That was...interesting.

by Liebkartoffel on Feb 22, 2008 10:06 AM PST up reply actions

Iowa sounds alot like CWU/Ellensburg
Except farmers will try to rape you if you wander near the fields late at night.
My mom says I'm cool

by aestivalis on Feb 23, 2008 7:46 AM PST up reply actions

Ellensburg has huge mountains in the distance
which is nice, but I'd say Iowa is significantly prettier than Ellensburg

Matthew
I might be up for it...
I don't have much experience drinking barleywines, but I'd like to try 'em... and 3 for $10 is a steal (assuming we're talking pints here, and not 4 oz samplers.)

by johnbai on Feb 22, 2008 11:10 AM PST reply actions

huzzah, an on topic reply!
I don't think I've had barleywine either. And yes, I assume it's regular sizes since they say $4 for one.

I'm off at ~5. I can give you a buzz then if you're still down. Or just check this thread.

by Matthew on Feb 22, 2008 11:32 AM PST up reply actions

yeah... I might hop a bus downtown
after work and just call you around 5ish.

by johnbai on Feb 22, 2008 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

Too bad I live in tacoma
and am not a big fan of barleywines.

BTW, they're not pints, and they're not 4oz tastes.   They're schooners.   Split the difference.

Let me know if one of them is amazing.

Oh, and if they have any of that bourbon-cask aged stuff, tell me about it.    Been wanting to try some, but it's spendy, so I want a good one.

by marc w on Feb 22, 2008 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

You're right
sort-of. I just called them and they're 7oz "tasters". Still worth it at 3 for $10 IMO, but that's no longer a super deal and is just a decent/good one.

by Matthew on Feb 22, 2008 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

Defining Drinks Down
7oz is a schooner now?    That's frickin' sloop.

by marc w on Feb 22, 2008 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

Don't forget, though,
that "strong beers" are just that - most barleywines and strong ales are anywhere from 8-12% ABV.  Not that that's a problem, but from a distribution standpoint, they keep the serving sizes down because of that.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 22, 2008 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

Totally
I wouldn't WANT a pint of barleywine.   Most bars I know serve them in proper schooners or maybe half pints.

I'm just objecting to the fact that the link above called what you were paying for a 'schooner' and what they actually give you is 7oz.
Sounds like a 14oz pint to me.

by marc w on Feb 22, 2008 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

Lots of bars do
any time they give the option of beer in one of those smaller glasses instead of a full US pint.

Ah. sorry.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Feb 22, 2008 2:41 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm
I meant this:
"They use a system where you buy tokens from your server for $4 each.

1 token = schooner of domestic craft beer
2 tokens = schooner of Belgian beer OR sampler of all six domestics
4 tokens = sampler of all six Belgians"

But I see that's the winter beer thingy.

by marc w on Feb 22, 2008 2:43 PM PST up reply actions

an "imperial pint"?
otherwise, I thought 16 oz was a pint.

by johnbai on Feb 22, 2008 4:24 PM PST up reply actions

And if someone sold you 14oz of beer
and called it a pint, you'd be pissed off.

20oz imperial pint... that's the good stuff.   You don't see that as often here, but it's a damn good thing to see.

by marc w on Feb 22, 2008 4:29 PM PST up reply actions

I've spent alot for Barley's
I wouldn't be surprised if they're 6 or 8 ounces.

by chrisisasavage on Feb 22, 2008 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

A friend of mine brews his own
then ages them, which doesn't work for most beers, but a good barley wine is the yummiest thing ever if it's aged a few years.

by chrisisasavage on Feb 22, 2008 9:21 PM PST up reply actions

$3 for 10 would be good for those
even if they were in freaking dixie cups.  Barley wine is some dangerous stuff, be careful if you're driving.

by chrisisasavage on Feb 22, 2008 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

Well shit
we wound up getting drunk at Liberty and The Delux instead... and, while walking on Broadway at 2am, were accosted by this inebriate who kept saying... why the fuck do you always have to have the last word? why are you always picking on people?  why you gotta come knock on my door 24/7 with nothing to say?  WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM?

I thought my psychotic, nihilistic friend Steve was going to kill this guy, but instead, he gave him a dollar and he went away.  It was pretty much awesome.

by johnbai on Feb 23, 2008 2:29 AM PST reply actions

oh yeah
this is aweeeeeesome. you people need to get down here. especially robert. nothing like starting out 21 in style after welcoming it with anything but.

So you went tonight?
We need a review of the barleywines!
