Will Leitch: Riche Sexson Sucks

So I went to the book signing of Will Leitch's (editor of Deadspin) book "God Save the Fan" here in Washington DC last night. Well, on Wednesday, Leitch had a post on one of our favorite topics: Big Richie. So I read that with glee, and showed up to the signing in my M's hat. When I got up to him I said "Thanks for the Sexson post, it's nice to know someone else understands our plight." And he laughed and said he loved the bar that he talked about.

Then he signed the book in the greatest way ever. It says, simply: "Rob- Richie Sexson sucks. Sorry. [signature]"

Will Leitch is my new hero.

Leitch has been my hero for a while
It's an awesome book, if you haven't read it yet.

Stop.
Remember, according to Big, booing just makes it worse.

I actually agree with Big Richie on this
Why boo someone who's trying?  Doesn't mean he doesn't suck.

If you're getting paid like pro athletes do...
You've got to accept it as part of the territory.  If you don't want to get booed take up another line of work.

Because I don't give a shit if he's trying.
Trying isn't winning us ballgames, performing is.

OK
But why boo?

by Paytheline on Feb 22, 2008 8:28 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Because he sucks and isn't performing.

Also, it isn't entirely directed at Sexson.
It's also directed at the team for saddling us with his craptastic contract.

Gotta agree.
I don't 'boo' my own teams much, but playing in front of emotional crowds that will give you positive or negative feedback immediately is part of the deal. And these guys are well paid to deal with it.

He can always go be an accountant.

Then scream
F#@K Bavasi Clap Clap F#@k McLaren Clap Clap at the top of your lungs, because thats where the problem really comes from, not Big Richie.

Then boo Bavasi
It's illogical to boo the player. That's like saying bad cooking is dangerous and has an evil soul. Don't blame the food, blame the cook. Eh, you get what I mean...

I boo Richie for Mac's sake
I want Mac to know I think Richie sucks and shouldn't have been "playing through the slump".

I think booing
the home team just for being bad (as opposed to not trying) is generally kind of classless and counterproductive. On the other hand, in the bizarro world we put athletes in, they get cheered, paid, and attended to wildly out of proportion to their actual contributions to mankind. So I figure they have to learn how to deal with the boos along with the hero worship.

Sure, most of us don't have however many people booing (or cheering) us at a time, but a lot of us have lousy jobs where we deal with the surly public, and still have trouble paying the rent.

Bang my head
This wasn't meant to be a post on booing, it was meant to be "Check it out, Will Leitch is a badass, and he said something we all pretty much agree on." Had I known it was going to become a booing thread, I wouldn't have said a word

When people say things we all agree on
We tend to end up talking about something else. It's just the way things work.

I just heard Leitch on NPR.
He was talking about the disconnect between sports journalists and the modern fan.  It was interesting stuff.

I don't "Boo" Richie....
I boo his bat for missing the ball. That bastard is stubborn.
