08 Mariners Outlook

Pretty good read over at fleece factor on the 08 mariners.

http://mlbfleecefactor.com/2008/02/11/the-2008-seattle-mariners-false-hope/

some notable quotes:

4. Carlos Silva (R) - .310, .290, .324, and .287. Those are opponents batting averages against Carlos Silva over the last four years.  Yes, they hit .324 against him in 2006.  Sickening.  Silva's average opponent has hit .299/.333/.458 against him over his career.  Yes, he's a ground ball/contact pitcher that eats up innings. I  get that.  But for those of you who think he'll fare better on grass, read this: Silva's ERA on grass over the last three years combined is 5.24 and batters have hit a whopping .327 against him - well above his turf numbers (3.92, .279).   Simply put, he's just not that good and certainly was not worth $48 million over 4 years. Prediction: Seattle will regret this one before Memorial Day.

1B. Richie Sexson (R) -He was AWFUL last year, hitting .205/.295/.399 with just 21 homeruns and 100 strikeouts. Every single aspect of his offense was offensive and was known to cause many Mariners fans to barf. And the worst part about Sexson is that he's typically a slow starter so the team (and fantasy owners) felt compelled to stick with him the whole season waiting for that turnaround. The Mariners even had a chance to dump him during the waiver period in August but didn't pull the trigger because they thought he could contribute to a stretch run which never materialized (partly because Dick Sexson never turned the corner in 2007). He was terrible and turned in one of the worst offensive seasons by a regular last season. Dick.

Does that mean
We can always regret this one?

Oh boy
It's been reported that Yuniesky Betancourt will hit second in this lineup but I just couldn't put his .308 OBP in this spot. I just couldn't...sorry.

Really? Yuni? .308!!!!!

Well, May 26 of this year
That should have been clearer. Much like the rest of this subthread

Thanks for posting the notable quotes.
The inaccuracies portrayed within saved me from clicking through to the full article.

Very skilled -
Your ability to pose insults as compliments is extraordinary. But here's your challenge - pose your compliments as insults. Are you up for it?

"You're better looking than I thought you'd be" is a backhanded compliment, not a compliment posed as an insult.

Go.

...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Feb 12, 2008 9:50 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unless the diary author and the article author
are the same person, I did no such thing.

Is it even possible to frame a compliment as an insult?

by Matthew on Feb 12, 2008 10:49 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Probably not.
But if anyone could do it, I have a feeling you could.

Maybe something like "God, I hate how fucking smart you are. It makes me sick." But that's a little too easy and a bit of a stretch.

...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Feb 12, 2008 10:57 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, in my book that's not an insult
to the other person so it wouldn't count.

Hmm... I'll ponder it further.

I've thought of two loopholes and they both suck.
  1.  Opposite day
  2.  You're a fucking asshole [few second pause] and by fucking asshole I mean wonderful human being.

How about...

Easy, backhanded compliment

Your ass is so fat it's almost kinda cute.

by batura on Feb 12, 2008 12:43 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I love backhanded compliments....
My favorite is "Wow, I love your style! It's so refreshing to meet someone who doesn't care about what other people think of their appearance."

Yea...
...it brings to light how awful he is and how bavasi was a fool to give him nearly $50M.  all you can do is laugh.
i loathe that signing. haha.  i mean, do you really think that was a smart move? i know the market for FA pitching is insane, but that doesn't make it right.

by em3 on Feb 12, 2008 10:09 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, it was clearly stupid
However, the so-called analysis was even worse.

ERA? Batting lines? Jesus. I could have done better than that in high school

by Graham on Feb 12, 2008 11:21 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Fine
Silva:
-Batting Average Against is a poor metric. We know Silva is going to have a high one, he doesn't strike many people out. If you're trying to argue that Silva is more hittable, you'd have to use BABIP, of which Silva's is league average.
-Grass vs turf argument? Really? And the author managed to ignore that the grass parks in the AL Central include Jacob's Field (103 3-year park factor for hitters), Comerica (101), US Cell (104) and Kauffman (103) compared to his home turf park, Metrodome (96). Wow, that totally couldn't be the reason! Nope. Certainly a groundball pitcher fares worse playing on a surface that slows down groundballs. That must be it.

Sexson:
-There's no actual 2008 outlook.
-The aforementioned waiver thing.

To be fair to em
I still think Silva will suck. But not for the reasons listed in the article.

enough comment flirting
just ask him out and be done with it.

I don't even understand our dynamic.
Besides, you flirt too much with Graham for my tastes. I'm the jealous type.

by Matthew on Feb 12, 2008 2:11 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's the accent.
Also, adding a superfluous "u" to words really does it for me.
...and now I'm here

by Librocrat on Feb 12, 2008 2:13 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The "u" isn't superfluous.
It's a necessary component of words correctly spelt.

by Llewdor on Feb 12, 2008 4:26 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah... Otherwise
you'd end up with "sperflos"

by johnbai on Feb 13, 2008 12:08 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

which is haxx0r spelling for
superflossing, which is slang for...well...if you don't already know, you probably don't want to.

what is the chance/cost
of picking up Nick Johnson? (would have also said hamilton)
SID is the MVP

by skoorbo on Feb 12, 2008 11:47 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't know, but I'd like to find out
Can't imagine the Nats would sell on him so low, but I suppose there's always a chance.

(Hamilton was traded to the rangers for Edinson Volquez+spects).
