Ichiro goes for 3000

Ichiro had 1,278 hits in his career in Japan.

Ichiro has 1,592 hits so far in his MLB career.

That's 2,870 total hits.

As he approaches 3,000 hits, will the Mariners make a big deal about this?  I can't imagine they'd let it pass without comment.

One M's staffer's only job this season
will be to market Ichiro's Run At Baseball Immortality!

Look for the hit meter in RF (same place where Junior's counter to 400 HRs was).

I don't know how big of a deal they'll make
but it'll definitely be saluted. At the very least I'm sure they'll pause the game to celebrate the accomplishment, just like they did at Safeco when Viagra ShouldBeLivingInFearofRyanSandberg McSteroid reached his 3000th hit.

I was at that game
It was a cool memory for about 3 weeks.

It's weird seeing those moments live
I was at the Bonds' record-setting game (about 30 feet from where the ball landed) and it was amazing. I hate Bonds and I hate the Giants, but it's hard to not get wrapped up in the moment when something like that happens.

I was at that game too
Fuck that game.

... though it was the one game I got to see in a suite.  All the free food and drink was pretty cool.

You suck
I was there with a group from my old (crappy) company in $7 bleacher seats, thinking "nothing can get worse than this"... Then we had 3,000 rubbed in our faces.

Fuck that game doesn't even begin to describe how worthless of an evening it was.

I can't believe he has
that many already. Seems like yesterday he was ROTY.

They'll make a big deal of it, sure, but I think he'll need to get to 3,000 MLB hits for everyone to really notice.

That shouldn't be a problem
if he continues his rate of 200+ hits a season, then he should reach it by his 40th birthday.

good god
to imagine if he had played his whole career in the US. he'd be a virtual shoe-in for the all time hit record.

The naysayers will
sqwuak about the level difference of competition between Japan and the US.  They'll completely ignore the fact that Ichiro has had no problem whatsoever with MLB and that if he had played here his whole career, he'd be pretty close to that mark anyway.

He'd have more
Due to the games played per season difference, Ichiro has only one 200 hit season in Japan, and is 7/7 here...

Huh, you just noticed? :)
It's been a pretty big deal over here the last few months when people talk about Ichiro (and I could have sworn I'd mentioned it here before).  The all-time Japanese hits leader is Isao Harimoto at 3085, so Ichiro has 215 to go for that.  I assume he'll get it at the end of this year or the beginning of next.  I hope the M's acknowledge that one, preferably by inviting Harimoto to Seattle.

Last night on TV I saw Ichiro working out taking some BP... with Kazuhiro Sasaki as his pitcher.  Kazu was like "So, Ichiro, you're gonna get to 3000 this year, right?" "Yeah, I only need 130 hits for that.  No problem."  "How about that record of 8 years with 200 hits?" "Oh, yeah, I'll be trying for that too." "What about Harimoto's count?" "Harimoto is a great man and had less games per year than I did."

The same show also showed Fukudome taking BP with former Dragons pitcher Eiji Ochiai, who was making fun of his taste in music... and showed Yokohama's Yuuki Yoshimura hitting a baseball through ten paper boards (some kind of power challenge).  Fun fun.  I wish I wasn't so sick and tired of Sho Nakata, though.

You're joking, right?
I mean, being as I've only been a Fighters fan since several years before we even drafted Darvish...

And no, he's not being posted, that was a stupid article some idiot made up to try to stir waves.

I'll be happy for him
As long as nobody makes any references to a certain Bernie Mac movie. Then all will go blank with white hot rage until I find myself in the Nevada desert, holding a shovel and covered in blood.
