K-Rod---->Mets
The Mets are on the brink of closing their most important game of the offseason — landing closer Francisco Rodriguez, according to a New York Post report.SI.com first reported the terms — a three-year deal worth $37 million. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal confirmed the terms Tuesday and also reported that the deal includes a vesting option for a fourth year that could raise the total value to approximately $50 million.
This is an absurdly fantastic deal for the Mets, I don't see how anything could possibly go wrong.
MORE HOT STOVE HILARITY (depending on your interpretation)
The chances of the Rangers trading shortstop Michael Young appear minimal. Teams are asking the Rangers about Young because of the thin market for shortstops, but the team is unlikely to seriously consider such a deal, according to major-league sources.

Angels win, 5-2!
We need the GIF of the Drew HR, that would go great with this.

This makes me want to vomit.
I’m not sure why but I really can’t stand W-Rod.

What happened to Omar Minaya's decision making abilities?
by Scrupio on Dec 9, 2008 9:13 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
I thought he was okay when he was with the Expos but since he's joined the Mets he's been pretty bad
by Scrupio on Dec 9, 2008 10:10 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Is this a joke?
He’s been better with the Mets than the Expos. With the Mets, he’s pretty much got all the big moves correct. It’s the little stuff where he’s made bad decisions.

Like giving Luis Castillo a stupidly long and overpaid contract?
by Scrupio on Dec 9, 2008 4:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, Castillo is overpaid
it’s still only about $6M a year, which is what percentage of the Mets annual salary? Castillo is hardly a serious franchise damaging move.
You disagree with signing Carlos Beltran? With trading for Delgado? With signing Wright and Reyes to their extensions? With signing Wagner? With obtaining Santana?
How exactly has he been pretty bad with the Mets? Make your case.

Nothing like the combo of Larish, Joyce, Clete Thomas, Clevlen, and even Ryan Raburn.
Those guys are all top line prospects destined for HOF greatness.
Can't wait for Ruskell to knock this one out of the park.

Yeah I think this deal is actually pretty reasonable for the Mets
If he’s good then he’s worth the vesting option. If he’s not great then the deal probably still is ok because the option doesn’t vest.

I hate paying that kind of money to any reliever
but coming away with $37m/3yr is probably way better than the Mets ever imagined. Not awful.

Pretty soon
We’re all just going to have to admit that this is 2003 all over again, that it’s the best buyer’s market we’ve seen in years, and the teams wise enough to be spending money right now are going to reap the rewards in the future.
Unless, of course, we’re headed for a depression and baseball’s about to take it in the shorts, but I don’t know that anyone knows how to predict that.

because Reggie Sanders got a 2/6 deal after hitting 31 homeruns and slugging .567 in a park that’s tough on RHBs.

I mentioned this in another thread, but it's more appropriate here.
Unless I’m mistaken, this means we need to root for the Mets to pass on Ibanez. K-Rod is rated a few points higher in the Elias ratings, so the Mets’ first-round pick would go to Anaheim and we’d get the second-round pick.
by Teej on Dec 9, 2008 12:10 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Ibanez rumours are fun
The Phillies, Mets and Cubs appear to have separated themselves from the pack of teams pursuing outfielder Raul Ibanez. Ibanez also is on the radar screen of the Braves and Angels. But the Braves have their pursuit of all their outfield options on hold until they find out whether they can sign pitcher A.J. Burnett. And the Angels would pursue Ibanez only if they fail to land their primary offensive target, Mark Teixeira.

The Mets, Angels, Dodgers and Royals are among several teams to inquire here about the availability of shortstop extraordinaire Michael Young of the Texas Rangers.

It's a common myth about defense
For instance:
“Backup catchers that can’t hit are really good at defense” (Rene Rivera)
“Shortstops that can hit must also be really good at defense” (Jeter/Young)
“Left fielders that can hit can play good defense” (Ibanez)

Hell...
…even with good offensive stats, many fans (and writers) essentially just go with “people who I like are good at offense.” See: anyone who thinks Ryan Howard had a better season than Albert Pujols, people who think that Bloomquist should get a full-time gig, etc.

Dang..wish this rumor had legs!
Per Rotoworld: A Cubs official indicated that there was nothing to a supposed Kosuke Fukudome-for-Carlos Silva rumor.
The contracts are similar, but the Cubs are better off hoping that Fukudome bounced back. Silva probably wouldn’t be an upgrade for their rotation.
I fucking hate you Mariners

From Steve Phillips:
The Mariners need a power hitter. The Brewers need a closer. There is speculation that the two teams are discussing a package involving J.J. Putz and Prince Fielder.
