Oh, dear god.
I know everyone rags on Geoff Baker (for some pretty good reasons), but..
At this morning's meetings, only one former player was selected by the veterans committee to the Hall of Fame. That was Joe Gordon... a 9 time all star with the Yankees and Indians in the late 40's and early 50's. The committee narrowly failed to vote in Washington State native Ron Santo... the great second baseman for the Chicago Cubs.
So, is it too late for KIRO to hire anyone from MLB.com to write their blog?

Baker does a good job. It is why I continue to read him.

Baker's a good beat writer, mostly.
He sucks at analysis. Bigtime. Larry Stone’s pretty good at both.

I wouldn't say Larry Stone's particularly good at analysis
Larry Stone just doesn’t pretend he’s an analyst.

Baker is a very good reporter and works really hard
For that I respect and read him.
If you ignore his high school drama bullshit and his analysis he’s really good

He certainly did a great job at last year's Winter Meetings. I'm excited to follow his work again during these meetings.

it's amazing how this guy mentions the stuff going on in vegas
and doesn’t think about the biggest fight of the year. Not to mention the construction “next door between the Bellagio and the MGM Grand.” They are not close to each other. The MGM Grand is probably a mile away.

He might recognize how ridiculous De la Hoya-Pacquiao is.
You can’t jump wait like that and challenge a great.

I'm just rounding out my vacation to the Philippines.
Last Saturday was practically a national holiday. Everyone took the day off — and I mean EVERYONE — to watch the fight. When Pacquiao won there were images of the streets of Manilla and it looked like the streets of Boston after the `04 LCS. I really wish I was in the city to experience that but I had a lot of fun in the province too. It’s like a war was just won.

Holy fucking shit
Pacquiao won? The fight happened? What the fuck is wrong with me?

The Grand is about 1/2 (Line)-3/4 (Walking) mile.
It goes Bellagio, Center, Monte, NYNY – MGM is across from NYNY
He’s probably staying at the Bellagio, which means the construction is really right next door. I’ve been hearing it every night for the last 3 weeks. And technically it is between the Bell and the MGM.
If all you do is go between those two properties (as a lot of people do), then it’s like nothing else exists, because you get a cab anyways. And if you do walk, you walk across to PH, then over along the tourist shops, and then you’re at the side door to the MGM. No other properties are hit.
And the fight was not really publicized in LV outside the MGM, mainly in their front lobby. It was rather easy to miss for someone that isn’t into that stuff. I knew there was a fight, but then again there’s always a big fight within those couple weeks. The rodeo actually got more ad space along the strip.
Also, the fight was over before most of the baseball people showed up.
I know way too much about LV….ugh.

I knew someone would come through.
The strip itself (the good parts) is only about a mile long, two miles tops. The Bellagio sits right in the middle while the MGM isn’t quite at the end on the south side of the strip (Mandalay Bay caps it off, if I remember correctly).

I think (Faux can correct if I'm wrong)
that the MGM is actually a tad east of Mandalay Bay. I thought they were both pretty much on the south end.

MGM is on the other side of the strip, so yeah, more east
but Mandalay Bay is further south and thus is the last megaresort on The Strip.

MGM is on the east side of LV Blvd, yes.
I would argue that the Excalibur is the last real place on the strip. There’s the Trop across from the Excalibur, and then the Luxor is across from a AMPM and a parking lot. The Mandalay is after that. I would consider the Luxor to be a good off-strip hotel (akin to the Hard Rock in terms of distance away from the middle), and the Mandalay is really more of a convention resort.
I would consider the strip to run the 1.5-2 mile stretch from the Trop/Excalibur north to the Wynn/Fashion show mall.

The LV Convention & Visitors Bureau would probably disagree
but I really have no opinion – all I know is that Mandalay Bay is a long way from anywhere.
