Saw that today. Very cool.
So does MGL sell his data to teams? The most current UZR numbers are usually not available to the public (other than the best-and-worst highlights), so I’m curious why he’s giving his formula to Fangraphs. Maybe he has more in-depth stuff that is still proprietary?
UZR + BIS data
= Ichiro as a plus defender
Adopted Giant: Aaron King
Wearing the crown by 2011. Or at least the LOOGY hat
As a RF back in '04
Ibanez projected to be -130 runs on the year. It was only 18 innings, but boy… they must have been something.

Apparently Rick Ankiel blows at defense
UZR : defense :: flat earth society : geography

Are you serious?
Fangraphs’ UZR doesn’t include throwing arms yet. Cardinals fans tell me his range really suffered after the injury. ANKIEL is why you think UZR is crap?

He's one of those guys I always think, "I know he's either really good in the field or really bad. I can't remember."
So now I know the answer to that.
Reminds me of one of my favorite Bill James quotes

I've never met a cool person named Brad.
And when I hear the name, all I think about is that douchey fantasy “expert” on Yahoo whose entire area of expertise is name puns.
I wrote that entire comment thinking this was the Wilkerson post.
And yet the point remains 100% the same.
I'm sitting on an awesome pun and just waiting for the opportunity to strike

I look forward to it.
I, for one, always thought they were funny in small doses.
At work, I want to stab people when they do it because it looks so childish and ridiculous in a newspaper, but here, I love it.
If you'd Wakamatsus for one day you'd see how important it is to enjoy the little things like this

I refuse to believe that Fogel didn't hack your account.

Plus, when that turns green I'm going to flag it
so my love and hatred can be expressed visually

it's interesting that only 60 players posted a UZR of
0.0 or greater last season.

Are you sure you weren't limiting the leader board to qualified players only?

Only by this measure
PMR thinks he’s a little below-average and he doesn’t show up in the +/- best/worst lists.

RZR should probably go away now
There’s no reason to ever use it again. It’s based on the same dataset as the UZR at FanGraphs, and it’s not nearly as accurate.
Is UZR going to be part of the daily in-season update?

Accurate?
How does one define accuracy wrt defensive metrics?
by Graham MacAree on Dec 8, 2008 9:44 AM PST up reply actions
Are player run values fitted to the team defensive value?
If not then you could compare the sum of the player run values to the total team value. Team defense is easier to predict right?
by Edgar for Pres on Dec 8, 2008 10:14 AM PST up reply actions
Why is team defense easier to predict?
If you’re thinking that team UZR should match team DER, not quite. DER needs to be park-adjusted, for one. For two, maybe the hitters happened to hit a lot of balls that were tough to field.

Maybe precision is a better word?
My uneducated guess would be that RZR has more variance and less agreement with other defensive metrics like UZR, PMR, and the +/- system, and as such should be disregarded, though I have absolutely no idea if this is the case or not.
bUZR and STATS ZR combo?
sUZR still isn’t public and based on what MGL’s reporting on the correlation of bUZR and sUZR, we need to use a STATS-based metric, too.
