Top 10 Lists For 2008

It's that time of the year again.  I'm surprised one of these posts hasn't been up already.  I really love seeing what other LLers tastes are, so let's get to it.  What are your Top 10s (or 5s) for the year in things like music, movies, ect.

(Small shameless plug: Full write ups on these at Long Live The Album with the album wrap up to come tomorrow.)

I haven't seen enough movies this year and was mostly disapointed with everything except The Dark Knight and Iron Man.  As for video games, I'm really enjoying Fallout 3.

Hm

My Top Ten Albums of 2008:
1. Bob Dylan – Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Volume 8
2. Dennis Wilson – Pacific Ocean Blue: Legacy Edition
3. Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend
4. Erykah Badu – New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War
5. Santogold – Santogold
6. She & Him – Volume One
7. Wolf Parade – At Mount Zoomer
8. Portishead – Third
9. David Byrne and Brian Eno – Everything That Happen Will Happen Today
10. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago

Shows:

  • Sub Pop 20 (Vaselines, Green River, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, and Flight of the Concords were highlights. I know I’m missing one or two bands that deserve to be listed, too)
Sasquatch and Bumbershoot didn’t really do it for me. And I must be getting old, because looking back on it, festivals are the only places I seem to remember seeing live music.

Movies:
1. The Dark Knight
2. Milk
3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
4. I haven’t decided yet, but those are my top three.

Various good things from 2008:

  • Getting engaged
  • Going to Fenway and being impressed by it
  • Going to New York City (and not being impressed at all by Yankee Stadium)
  • Felix’s grandslam
  • Going to 40-50 Mariner games (and watching them win something like 12 of them)
  • Zduriencik
  • The Seahawks’ playoff game against Washington
  • Going to Whistler thrice

Things that sucked in 2008:

  • The Mariners
  • The Seahawks
  • Foolishly staying a day in Hartford, CT

Same deal with Fenway vs. Yankee Stadium..I was so excited and living in the moment at Fenway.

In Yankee Stadium all I could think about is how dirty everything was and if I was going to hide my credit cards in my shoes or underwear.

I fucking hate you Mariners

I don't watch (many) movies so I can only really do music.

6. Krallice – Krallice
7. The Lamp of Thoth – Portents, Omens, & Dooms
8. Darkestrah – The Great Silk Road

10. Mirrorthrone – Gangrene

Songs: (Band – Song)

1. Coldworld – Schmerzensschreie

3. Doom:VS – Upon the Cataract
4. Isole – Dying
5. Falls of Rauros – The Fire We Fathered
6. Coldworld – Escape
7. Darkestrah – Inner Voice
8. Krallice – Energy Chasms
9. Frail – Crooked Necks And Uneven Strides
10. Wedard – Black Hole Sagittarius Alpha

Haven’t really played any games either, none that came out this year anyway.

Nice to see a list like this

I’ve haven’t delved into this type of metal yet, but I’m interested…

by Manzanillos Cup on Dec 31, 2008 12:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What else are you interested in?

I started out listening to stuff like Opeth, King Diamond, Burzum etc about 5 years ago and eventually got into the more “underground” stuff like what I listed. It’s a pretty natural step to take if you’re into metal, and there’s a lot of good music out there.

Faves

in absolutely no order whatever:

Nick Cave: Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
This is my exception to “in no order whatever” because it’s far and away the best album of the year, in my opinion.

Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago. (Sensitive bearded-guy rock, not at all my style but it really grabbed me).
Okkervil River: The Stand-Ins
The Hold Steady: Stay Positive
The Gaslight Anthem: The ’59 Sound
Radio Birdman: Zeno Beach
Local H: 12 Angry Months
She & Him: Volume 1
The Gutter Twins: Saturnalia
Elbow: The Seldom Seen Kid
David Byrne/Brian Eno: Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
The Knux: Remind Me In 3 Days…

Shows:

Nick Cave, Crystal Ballroom (probably my favorite show of the year)
The Hold Steady, Crystal Ballroom (strong contender for best show of the year)
AC/DC, Tacoma Dome
Dale Watson, Ginny’s Little Longhorn, Austin TX
The Fluid, Sub Pop 20 (another strong contender for best show of the year)
The Vaselines, Sub Pop 20
Mudhoney, Sub Pop 20
Flight Of The Conchords, Sub Pop 20
Spearhead, Crystal Ballroom

Actually Zeno Beach is from 2006

so take that off the list even though it just got a US release this year.

I still haven't heard Nick Cave

Reminds me that I need to bother looking up that torrent sometime soon.

Start with Murder Ballads

Then go to The Boatman’s Call, Let Love In, No More Shall We Part, and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!.

The Good Son is still my favorite Nick Cave album

seemed to mark some transition for him toward the balladeer that he was to become.
Play “The Ship Song” for Mrs. Katal.

That is indeed a good'un

for some reason I always neglect to list it but it’s well worth a listen.

Interesting

they didn’t seem all that different to me, which is why I liked it so much.

I agree.

I think I liked the first and last tracks and everything in the middle disappointed me.

by Schaefer on Dec 31, 2008 8:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Albums only

Elbow – Seldom Seen Kid
Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes
Karine Polwart – This Earthly Spell
MGMT – Orangular Spectacular
Lykke Li – Youth Novels
Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke

Shit, this was a disappointing year for music, I can’t even think of any more from 2008 that are in the same bracket.

Fleet Foxes were AMAZING at Sasquatch this year.

I’ll never forget the feeling of cresting the hill and descending into the main amphitheater. It was warmish, with scattered sunlight. It was my first time ever at the Gorge, and the sheer beauty of the landscape behind the stage rendered me speechless. The Fleet Foxes were already playing and their sweet harmonies combined with the stunning view was an amazing combination.

Seriously, New Surrender?

I know musical acts are our opinions and most people here wouldn’t admit to listening to this type of music anyway, but this is a serious question. I know no other Anberlin fans who like New Surrender.

by NOLAmarinergirl on Dec 31, 2008 6:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Albums

1- Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool (best rapper out there today IMO)*
2- GNV FLA- Less Than Jake
3- Sound of Madness- Shinedown
4- Black Sun- RA
5- Float- Flogging Molly

There’s a top 5, I have a hard time keeping track of what came out this year.

*Came out in December 07, but I only got introduced to him this year. It deserved mentioning.

boring bland dreck.

Coldplay is the band frat boys play for sorority girls when they want to be seen as “sensitive” and “deep”.

I never understand it when someone says that Coldplay has "grown on them"

Their first two albums are the only ones worth a damn. Everything after the fact is manufactured cheese.

It's fantastic.

I didn’t realize that Pettit was still alive, for one, or that he videotaped a lot of his preparations for the stunt – you know exactly what happens, and how it ends, but there’s still a great tension that the film builds up that really makes for a compelling story.
