Big Unit to Giants
The Giants signed Randy Johnson today. I didn't see that one coming. One year deal, no word on the specifics. Low risk deal for the Giants, and the Unit still has another good year in him, I think. And the Giants get to help Randy celebrate 300.
One less player for the 90's era Mariners Nostalgia tour. Now if Junior would just sign somewhere we could put that whole idea to bed.

Yeah but this one is actually still good.
I hope he stays healthy
300 wins, 5000 Ks are numbers worthy of a player that great.

We play SF May 22-24
There’s a reasonable chance he gets #300 at Safeco.

Now that would be cool.
Truth be told I was sort of hoping for a small low-risk deal like this by Big Z. Seems we’re pitcher heavy right now. One quick “Jarrod Washburn was traded to XXX for a bag of Twizzlers and a Shamwow” and that could have been fixed relatively easily though.
From what I remember, didn’t Randy not quite like being in Seattle? Or were all of those rumors overblown?
All being the same, I think most agree if we have to do a nostalgia signing, this would have been much better than the looming inevitable one. Hopefully I’m wrong when I say inevitable.

Awesome
Guess I’ll be hitting up some giants games next year.
+2.5M in performance bonuses, +2.5M in award bonuses
So it is $8M-13M

The only reason why I can see teams balking at signing him
is that you’ll probably need another SP to cover all the starts he’ll miss due to old man injuries like a sore back.

He wanted to sign with a team that trains in Arizona
That takes teams that would otherwise love to have him (Atlanta, St. Louis, Philly etc.) out of play unless until he exhausts every west coast option.
How can the giants be so smart and so stupid all at once?
They might be pretty decent next year.
+17.25 WAR
for the lineup
…

…
That may just do it in that division, assuming health, etc.

And Zito too!
What we would give for him to just be average. It’s amazing that he should be our fifth starter. If we’re lucky, they’ll skip him when the schedule allows it.

Five more years
Five…I need a strong drink. Players on the wrong side of 30 suddenly get better all the time, right?

Can someone please explain to me just what happened with him & Seattle?
I remember all my little friends and I pretending to be Randy Johnson, throwing rocks at cars, and then he’s just gone and people were mad. Surely there was more to it.
He had a falling out with upper management.
Either they were very insensitive about the death of his father or there was a miscommunication and they weren’t aware of the death of his father. He demanded a trade and the popular opinion is that he tanked it the rest of his time in Seattle; there is ample reason to believe that this line of thinking is total bullshit.

Also keep in mind that he gave us the best years we have ever seen from a SP in Seattle
After his Father passed. He was treated like an afterthought for many years by Chuck.
The kicker IMO is that on the day that Griffey wins the MVP the Mariners use that national stage as a chance to tell the world that they will not attempt to resign Randy beyond the year left on his contract. They played up the whole damaged goods angle.
At that point he was done with Seattle.
A big part of the animosity I feel towards upper management is directly related to the way the treated Randy.
He doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his role in making the Mariners relevant/saving baseball in Seattle.
