OTFPOTD: 12/26/08 - The Doubleheader edition
Since yesterday was Christmas and apparently most people felt like spurning LL for their families (admirable, I suppose), the game will be made up as part of a Day/Night doubleheader. Not today of course, as I imagine traffic will still be down thanks to vacations and families and Wintery cheer. Or some of you may still be too hungover to get up and type.
Anyway, I will kick us off thusly: New Years Resolutions as a Mariner fan - go!
For my part, I resolve to read "The Book" (already ordered), to consult Fangraphs and Statcorner before offering anything but anecdotal opinions, and to still give Ichiro! an exclamation mark after each typing, because the man has given us a remarkable 100 mil in value over his career so far. I also resolve to give Carlos Silva another chance (you have a month to show me you aren't going to be the same gopherballing pile of suck, Michelin Man.)

The annoying thing about working the day after Christmas
is that third bottle of wine that had to remain unopened, due to impending work. But still. I really feel for the people that work at the Walgreens in my neighborhood – not only are they open on Christmas, which is bad enough, but yesterday they were supposed to close at 6 and they ended up staying open until almost 10 because they’re the only store that’s easy to get to for a lot of people in my ’hood in bad weather.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
My store was open yesterday as well.
Being 24 hours, 365 days a year.
Thankfully (for me), it was my week off. Can’t say the same for New Years, though. Oh well, I’d honestly rather have Christmas.
I'm at work, but didn't pass on the third bottle like you did. I regret that.
Screw you, Mariners. I'm back in football's loving arms. *edit: well, shit. This isn't going well.
I thank the breakfast mimosas for the decision to pass on bottle #3 actually
had I not had those I would have been much more inclined to keep drinking last night.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I could use one of those now!
Screw you, Mariners. I'm back in football's loving arms. *edit: well, shit. This isn't going well.
Yeah, me too
it’s amazing how few people are here today. “Amazing” may be the wrong word, since it’s Boxing Day and it’s a Friday and people wanted a four-day weekend and all, but damn it’s dead around here.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Happy Boxing Day draw to you, good sir.

I am sick so I called it quits after one beer.
Now I am at work for a few hours to get ready for next week when everyone will want something done by the end of the year.
My Mariners resolution
is to finally dive into sabermetrics and see what I’ve been missing out on. I tend to run screaming from those posts here but I’d like to know what people are talking about at meet-ups.
a noble resolution.

Arsenal lost another player in pre-game warm-ups this morning
seriously, anybody with any sort of footballing experience (skill is a nice-to-have, but not necessary) that can get to North London in the next few days can probably pick up a contract in January – things are getting desperate. They’re practically down to the groundskeeping staff at this point.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
don't make me sing the Steve Gerrard Gerrard song again
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
I sincerely hope that Arsenal come in with a £ridiculous bid for Xabi Alonso in January
Wenger’s already said he will be spending money, and I think he actually regrets not getting Alonso in the summer; it will have to be a ridiculous bid to pry him loose, but Arsenal have the money.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
He's smart enough to know to stick with Liverpool
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
True.
But is he greedy enough to leave?
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Never underestimate greed.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
Boy I thought a handful of people would be here today
and that might be an overestimate!

A good result for Mark Hughes
who will live to be employed another week or two. Arsenal are luuuuuuuuuuucky to be up at half time but I’ll take it.

this should have been titled ... LLLJ - Arsenal edition

I'm just amazed they're 2-0 up at this point
didn’t see that coming at all.

Every time I say something on the internets about football bad things happen
I believe this goes back to the 1999 Champions League final when I emailed my friend, as Man Utd were down 1-0 with almost no time left, and said “OH THIS IS SWEET”. Two minutes later, it was 2-1 United and I was on the verge of throwing my computer out the window. I should have learned from my mistake.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
in the ear. Very hard.
that’s one of the few games that still has the capacity to anger me – that and the 2001 FA Cup final that I paid scalper’s prices to go to only to watch THAT LITTLE SHITBALL MICHAEL FUCKING OWEN STEAL THE CUP LIKE AN ASSHOLE. FUCK.

great article indeed.
I like that the man is curious about his history and feels the need to bond with guys like Suzuki. It bodes well for his potential abilities off the field as a manager. I am legitimately excited for the M’s moving forward.

Just read "Scout's Honor" by Bill Shanks
Nice read. The jacket markets the book as the anti-Moneyball which is vaguely annoying. Probably just a marketing idea. A lot interesting stuff on pro scouting, philosophies and connections. Primarily regarding the Braves organization. Zduriencik gets a brief mention. I know he’s putting together his own spin on team building here, but it’s interesting to get a bit of an idea of the culture he developed in.

You know people whine and bitch about the 360's failure rates all the time
but when your Sony console dies? Oh, that’s when you’re fucked.
My PS3 kicked the bucket two days ago and according to Sony, I’m going to have to pay $150 for a new optical drive before they factor in my shipping fees.
Forget fixing it.
whenever you are bored, slowly burn a dollar bill. It will provide equal entertainment and will hopefully cost you less money long term.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!
Thats weird,
because when Sony fixed my PS3 it was free and they even sent out a box for free shipping.
I made it to my parents yesterday...
…but almost didn’t make it home. The roads once you get past the Capital Mall area are STILL pretty bad (even after they’ve plowed them countless times). I’ll be lucky to get out of my neighborhood without getting high-centered. Now that the snow is melting a bit, the ruts are pretty deep and in some ways it feels like I’m driving on a railroad with the turbulence of an airplane in a thunderstorm.
Having that extra glass of wine, too, didn’t help. I was in bed by 9:30 and asleep by 10:30. But most of that was because of going to bed the night before after 1 a.m. and being semi-woken up by 4 and forced out of bed at 6 thanks to some old fat dude in a red suit who decided to brave the snow storms and bring my kid some presents.
So, my new year’s resolution w/r/t the M’s – I’d like to attend one LL group game this year. I didn’t last year, and I’m saddened by that.

TELL ME ABOUT IT
this is one of the most frustrating seasons Arsenal has had since 1992-3.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
So I've been looking at all of the "Video Games of 2009" lists,
and haven’t found one game I’m genuinely excited for. 2009 could be the year I quit playing games and write the great American novel. Unless Civ 5 is announced, then nothing else matters.
What games are you looking forward to?
MLB 09 The Show.
No other game really matters. That series is awesome.

Third(ed?)
I started getting The Show in 06, but it seems they add at least one major feature every year.
Well, I will appreciate for you to keep my zingers out of your mouth!
I just wish the 360 had a solid MLB title.
The 2K series really licks balls.
You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen.
I don't know what you're talking about
1. Borderlands
2. Prototype
3. Bioshock 2
4. Saboteur
5. Arkham Asylum
Are just a few of the games I’m excited about, especially Prototype and Borderlands
Well Resident Evil 5 should be good.
And then there’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. That’s going to be excellent.
Awesome
A snowplow came through the main roads of my housing development. This means that all of the snow that was on the roads was pushed into the cul-de-sacs, essentially creating a wall at the end of each of them. I just spent 10 minutes shoveling a rudimentary path, so that my car can come and go without ice scraping along the bottom of it all the while (like what happened yesterday morning, last night, and again this morning). Grr.
It's called a berm
Having to shovel a foot of snow off the end of your driveway is worth the sacrifice

If anyone is looking for a new keyboard
the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 is an excellent choice. Finally I found a keyboard worthy to replace my 12 year old Natural Pro.
That's awesome!
Plus, I work within walking distance of the new arena in Kent, so I’ll be hitting plenty of games live

Portlanders
What would you recommend to do in your fair city? Where are the best places to eat? I am going with my dad who does not drink and I am not of age so keep this in mind. I am going to tomorrow’s Blazers game and we are staying near the Rose Garden but we will have a reliable means of transport (car).
Actually, yes, ride MAX--it's free from Lloyd Center into downtown and much less of a pain than driving.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Dec 27, 2008 9:03 AM PST up reply actions
And much cheaper
the MAX is free from Lloyd Center to downtown, and parking at a blazer game is a minimum of $20. What kind of food do you like? By “near the rose garden” do you mean downtown or on the Rose Garden side of the river? There’s some pretty good restaurants over that way – one of my favorite Mexican restaurants is Chez Jose, on NE Broadway, about a 5 min drive from the Rose Garden. There’s a couple good brunch spots on NE Broadway as well, the Cadillac Cafe is always good but can get a bit crowded at the weekends.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Apparently it's NW Downtown.
As in across the river on the 30 from the Rose Garden. I basically enjoy every food except for a lot of Asian food. I’ll try those places out.

By this I mean I dislike onions and peanut sauce.
Thus eliminating much of the selection
by Mariner John on Dec 27, 2008 2:12 PM PST up reply actions
Across the river on the 30?
So you’re in NW Portland? (there’s NW, then there’s downtown, two totally separate areas) I’m a bit confused but I’d still recommend those two restaurants, though. And nobody in Portland calls it “The 30” – that’s a SoCal thing. But if you are in NW Portland and still have access to this to read LL, go to Besaw’s for breakfast – you won’t get a better breakfast in the city.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I'm on 23rd and Vaughn if that helps.
I now realize that the bridge was the Fremont Bridge.
Thanks for the restaurant advice. That place is like a block from the hotel so I’ll definitely check it out.

Yes, absolutely go to Besaw's
it’s amazing. And if you’re still around for dinner Sunday night, and like Indian food, Swagat on NW 21st and Lovejoy is really good.

My dad wouldn't go for Indian food.
Thanks though.

Are you a reader?
My absolute must in Portland is Powell’s. It’s on 10th and Burnside and is the largest bookstore west of the Mississippi. It has both new and used books and tons of recommendations from the staff. I could wander in Powell’s for hours.
Plus if the weather is as icky as ours is down south, you’ll want to be inside.
